Alberta shelters are recognized as leaders not only in Canada but around the world. —Jan Reimer, Provincial Coordinator About us ACWS vision We believe in a world free from violence and abuse. ACWS mission The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters is a province-wide, voluntary organization supporting women’s shelters and their partners through education, research and services for the benefit of abused women and their children.
Provincial Coordinator’s Message We celebrated our 25th anniversary by welcoming the world. What a wonderful experience that was. From Nepal, Rwanda, Armenia, Vietnam, Iceland and 46 other countries, 809 shelter staff gathered in Edmonton’s Convention Centre to create a new international community. Many participants also discovered their own cultural community; for the first time, Indigenous shelter workers around the world met as did women from Southeast Asia. Everybody was so moved by an absolutely amazing conference. People will remember their time in Edmonton. When work gets very hard, shelter workers then can remember all those faces in the room and all the support for the work they do. A special thanks to Patti McClocklin for her remarkable work as conference organizer and to the wonderful ACWS staff for their incredible commitment. workers there were raising funds for a shelter in India. Here at home, ACWS is incorporating new learning from the conference into Practical Frameworks for Change. And on a global level, shelter workers around the world now have a permanent network. The Global Network of Women’s Shelters was formed by twenty international shelter leaders at a meeting organized by ACWS after the conference. As ACWS moves into our next 25 years, Alberta shelters are recognized as leaders not only in Canada but around the world. Our goal is the same goal as every shelter and shelter organization in every province, territory, and state of every country represented at the conference: to end violence against women and children. We look forward to positioning shelters as leaders in collaborative efforts to achieve this goal. Jan Reimer The connections continue.
