WESTERN GOLF ASSOCIATION
EVANS SCHOLARS FOUNDATION
Founded in 1899, the Western Golf Association
conducts world-class championships for professional
and amateur golfers, promotes the use of caddies,
and oversees the Evans Scholars Foundation, which
awards college scholarships—including full tuition
and housing—to caddies from modest means.
Shamir Villeda Cruz is on course to realizing the American Dream. After fleeing menacing gangs in his
native Guatemala, he arrived in the U.S. at the age of 14. With the support of his foster parents and
the Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Illinois, he became a caddie and earned an Evans Scholarship in 2012.
Shamir is now a freshman at the University of Illinois.
On course
to continued
success
Thank you to all our Par Club members and other
supporters who contributed a record $18.8 million in 2012.
Because of your generosity, we were able to award
240 new Evans Scholarships this year at a time when
the need is greater than ever.
Such success was due in large part to the Match Play
Challenge, which raised $5.45 million in 2012. We are
honored that so many people continue to step up for
the cause.
We welcomed the biggest names in golf to the BMW
Championship, which was named the PGA TOUR’s Tournament
of the Year. And we continue to bring an unprecedented
roster of rising stars together for the Western Amateur
and Western Junior championships.
We launched the Caddie Academy—teeing up the future
for high school girls from economically disadvantaged
families. This model program is spreading the message
of the Evans Scholarship to more deserving young
people, while developing the caddie pipeline.
What keeps us on course to continued success? The generosity
and unwavering spirit of the golf community. Thank you.
Kara Stack describes herself as a morning person, which is a
plus when it comes to caddying and teaching. At Glen Oak Country
Club, she loved getting the early loops. At St. Angela’s School, where
she teaches fourth grade, Kara is raring to go by the crack of dawn.
This is Kara’s first year in the classroom, and her sense of purpose is clear. “I get to change
lives,” she says, acknowledging the many challenges her students face living in Chicago’s
impoverished Austin community.
What put Kara on track to earning her teaching degree? An Evans Scholarship.
She started caddying at age 13, encouraged by her older brother Ryan, who also earned an
Evans Scholarship. They both graduated from the University of Illinois.
Caddying isn’t the only thing that runs in the Stack family. Kara’s mother and sister, Kelly,
are also teachers. “We sit around the table and talk teaching strategies,” Kara says.
Living at the Evans Scholarship House prepared her well for the classroom. “Group
living teaches you about cooperation,” she says. As a member of the Executive Board,
she learned the importance of being a good listener and a leader.
Good leadership was exactly what the Evans Scholars Foundation had in mind when Kara
was hired as a counselor for the new Caddie Academy. The program aims to open the door
to caddying—and an Evans Scholarship—for economically disadvantaged young women.
This past summer, Kara lived with the girls at the Evans Scholarship House at Northwestern,
mentoring them and driving them to clubs to caddie. “I was like that Mom who’s always
looking back in the rearview mirror with something to say,” Kara laughs.
What was her message to the girls? “This is an opportunity of a lifetime! Go for it!”
The University of illinois is honored to have the largest Evans Scholars
Chapter among the 19 universities with Scholars on their campuses. This school
is stronger because of them—fine young men and women who lead and serve by
example. Today there are 1,120 Evans Alumni who are part of our worldwide alumni
network. They are making meaningful contributions in every aspect of their lives, and
we are proud to call them Illini.
Patrick Akujobi started caddying at Clovernook Country Club
when he was in sixth grade. He and his family had moved to the
U.S. from Nigeria three years earlier.
At the time, caddying was something Patrick knew nothing about. “There was a flier on
caddying posted at my school,” he recalls. “Looking back, I realize that was the beginning
of everything.”
As soon as he learned about the Evans Scholarship, he knew that was his goal. His parents
were working hard to pay for Patrick’s tuition at a Catholic high school and “there was no
way I was going to ask them for money for college.”
This says everything about Patrick’s drive and determination. In golf, it’s called keeping your
eye on the ball.
A senior at Ohio State, Patrick is pursuing a degree in accounting. He plans to become a CPA,
but for now he’s juggling offers from two top firms for a summer internship. Patrick credits
his experience as a caddie and an Evans Scholar with helping him land last year’s internship
with Ernst & Young. “I know all about hard work,” he says.
Living in the Evans Scholarship House has been a defining experience for Patrick. He has
held numerous governance positions over the years, honing his interpersonal skills and the
fine art of negotiation. As Administrative Vice President, Patrick oversees housekeeping
duties among the Scholars. Enough said.
Among his numerous service commitments as an Evans Scholar, Patrick chairs an annual
golf tournament that raises funds for student safety initiatives on campus. He also speaks
regularly before large groups of high school students about college and issues of diversity.
“You have to lead by example,” he says.
Today, thousands of students at Ohio State are the first in their families to go
to college. Some of these students have been given this life-changing opportunity—and are
committed to their own success—because of the investment the Evans Scholars program
has made in their future. Our Evans Scholars exemplify the ideals of our student body at
Ohio State through their hard work and dedication to excellence.
Hannah Keith forgot her lunch at home one day, and this is
how she became an Evans Scholar.
The story goes that while dropping off her lunch at school, Hannah’s father struck up a
conversation with a security guard—whose son happened to be an Evans Scholar.
When Hannah got home that afternoon, her father brought up the Evans Scholarship.
“We both had this ‘aha’ moment,” recalls Hannah, whose parents had divorced before she
entered grammar school and had faced tough financial times. “Community college was a
very real option for me at the time,” she says.
With Aurora Country Club down the street, Hannah started caddying with an eye toward
earning an Evans Scholarship.
After graduating fourth in her class at West Aurora High School, Hannah turned her attention
to Northwestern. She had been in many plays and musicals and knew that Northwestern
had one of the finest theater departments in the country. That’s why Hannah set her sights
on becoming…an investment banker. “That idea lasted for about a year,” she laughs.
In June, Hannah will graduate with a degree in theater. Then she’s going to Hollywood.
“I told my dad to give me five years, and if I don’t make it, I’ll get a real job,” she says.
Hannah reports that living at the Evans Scholarship House felt like family since day one.
When she takes to the stage in an upcoming musical, her housemates will be in the
audience cheering her on.
“I got great training in theater at Northwestern,” she says. “I received an even better
training for life as an Evans Scholar.”
“
We are proud to have the historic Evans Scholars program as a vital
partner in our educational mission. The legacy of Chick Evans means a great deal at
Northwestern. We are honored to have Evans Scholars here on our campus—fulfilling
their personal and academic goals at one of the nation’s top universities. Their presence
among us as students, leaders and alumni continues to leave an indelible mark upon
the Wildcat community.
John Parent keeps a college tuition receipt from his freshman
year in his wallet. It serves as a constant reminder for him to
always do his best at school. “I understand the true value of an
Evans Scholarship better than most,” he says.
In 2008, John was the first to sign up for the new caddie program at Horseshoe Bay
Golf Club. But he was already a senior in high school and this meant he couldn’t meet the
two-summer caddying requirement to become eligible for an Evans Scholarship his first
year in college.
He knew he was on his own. And like thousands of other young people from middle-class
families, John took out college loans. The youngest of four siblings, he understood full well
the financial stress his parents were under to make ends meet.
John enrolled at the University of Wisconsin in 2009. The “classic small-town kid” from
Sturgeon Bay quickly took to the Big Ten School and began pursuing his degree in finance.
He also pursued the Evans Scholarship, finishing his loops and building his network of
supporters at the club.
With a distinguished high school career and a stellar first year at Wisconsin, John returned
to Madison as an Evans Scholar. The move from a dorm to the Evans Scholarship House
was something he will never forget. “We all realize the gift we have, and it brings us
together in a very powerful way,” he says. In 2012, John was elected chapter president.
This June, John will join the firm of Robert W. Baird in the investment banking department.
He’s already studying for the GMAT, even though he will tell you that business school is a
ways off. “The scores are good for five years,” he laughs. “I have to be ready.”
“
One of the longest and deepest traditions surrounding this university,
the Wisconsin Idea signifies a general principle—that education should influence and
improve lives beyond the boundaries of the classroom. In their strong commitment
to public service, the Evans Scholars from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
exemplify this guiding philosophy every day.
Match Play Challenge Sets a New Course Record
It was another record year for the Match Play Challenge,
the WGA’s most successful campaign in history.
Thanks to the generosity of 679 major gift donors,
the Challenge raised $5.45 million in 2012, including
$2.15 million from 19 Match Play Partners.
Over the past two years, the Challenge has raised
$9.9 million, with $3.9 million contributed through
leadership gifts from 23 Match Play Partners.
The Match Play Challenge has done more than impact
the bottom line. It has inspired thousands of Par Club
members to upgrade their membership level and many
lapsed members to renew their support.
With Evans Scholars applications at an all-time high,
the Match Play Challenge has enabled the WGA’s Evans
Scholars Foundation to award more scholarships and to
plan for further growth as education costs continue to rise.
“The Match Play Campaign has had a major impact on the
lives of our Scholars and on the financial strength of our
organization,” says John Kaczkowski, WGA President and CEO.
“We are honored that so many have stepped up to the tee.”
The event, which included dinner, dancing, and live and
silent auctions, raised $600,000 for the Evans Scholars
Foundation. Featured speaker and golf legend Tom
Watson reflected on his career and affiliation with the
WGA—including his three Western Open wins. Guests
also heard from Marquette Evans Scholar Maryclaret
Ndubuisi-Obi, who spoke of her aspirations to become
a doctor with the help of her Evans Scholarship.
Teeing Up for the Future
In 2012, the WGA launched the Caddie Academy, providing 12 young women with an opportunity to caddie at clubs
on Chicago’s North Shore—and hopefully to someday earn an Evans Scholarship. The Academy targets high school
girls who come from economically disadvantaged families and who live far from a country club. During the seven-week
summer program, participants live at the Northwestern Evans Scholarship House and are mentored by Evans Alumni
who help oversee the Academy.
The University of Missouri won two top academic honors
in 2012. The entire Mizzou chapter won the prestigious
it shared with the Northwestern chapter. It was the first
time in the history of the Evans Scholars program that two
chapters tied for the top award. Missouri also earned the
New Scholar academic trophy for having the highest GPA
for the fall semester among all new Evans Scholars classes.
We exist for the love of the game, the spirit
of competition, the camaraderie of the golf
community—and the pride that comes from
awarding college scholarships to caddies
who need our help.
It is the generosity and unwavering spirit of
the golf community that keeps us on course
to continued success.
