The Egyptians and Bristol
Can you spot Bristol’s Egyptian connections?
Did you enjoy the Pharaoh King of Egypt exhibition at Bristol Museum &
Where is there an Egyptian Influence In Bristol?
In the Churchyard of St Mary’s
Church in Henbury, north Bristol,
you can find the tomb of Amelia
Blanford Edwards. She was an
imprtant archeologist and writer
who founded the Egypt Exploration
Fund. Her grave is marked by an obelisk and
an ‘ankh’, the Egyptian sign of life.
At Arnos Vale Cemetery in south Bristol you
can find many examples of tombs in the form
of Egyptian-style obelisks. They often feature
birds, an Egyptian symbol of the soul.
Tutmania
In 1922, the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered by archaeologist Howard
Carter. This major event provoked a craze for everything Egyptian, known as
‘Tutmania’. This affected cinema, fashion, jewellery and architecture and the
equisite artefacts of Ancient Egypt influenced the Art Deco style of design.
In Bristol, Whiteladies Picture House on Whiteladies Road is an example of an
Art Deco inspired cinema building.
Clifton Suspension Bridge
Isambard Kingdom Brunel was inspired by Egyptian style
when he designed the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.
His original designs included
hieroglyphs and sphinxes on
the two pillars.
sphinxes. A sphinx is a monumental
creature with a lion’s body and the
head of a king, believed to guard the
entrance to the underworld. Can you
with sphinxes on top of the towers?
