Introducing Helene Dorian
We are delighted to welcome Helene Dorian to
the staff of the SF Institute. She will serve as
coordinator for Friends of the Institute.
A message from Helene:
Hello,
It is my pleasure to introduce myself, Helene
Dorian, as the Training Administrator at the C. G. Jung
Institute of San Francisco.
My work experience has been in the non-profit
and educational communities in San Francisco. For the
past 6 1/2 years, I was employed at the Department of
Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at UCSF.
I represented the department as both HR Analyst for
faculty and staff as well as taking on the role of Interim
Student Affairs Officer for the 3 year UCSF/SFSU
Graduate Program in Physical Therapy. I am very
passionate about working for a community-based
organization that promotes education.
Many years ago I moved to San Francisco from
New York City. I received my BA and a secondary
education teaching credential in French from SFSU. I am
married, live in San Francisco and have one daughter who
just comleted her Freshman year at Rutgers - the State
University of New Jersey. I enjoy live theater, finding
great restaurants, taking long walks and reading!
I look forward to working with you to support the
Friends of the Institute. If you have any questions about
your membership status or just questions in general,
please feel free to contact me at hdorian@sfjung.org or by
phoning 415-771-8055 ext. 210
Sincerely,
Helene Dorian
Special Thanks
Volunteers are the life blood of the Friends
of the Institute. From the beautiful badges made by
Johanna Baruch and the greeting at the door by Jim
Klippert and Pam Sloane to the lovely table set for
our receptions by Zoe Klippert, we are grateful for
the efforts made on behalf of the Friends.
We are especially grateful, as well, to Analyst
Shira Barnett who has opened up opportunities for
private tours at the De Young and Legion of Honor
Museums, offering us a rare opportunity to engage
with important works of art in a relaxed and
uncrowded setting.
Our committee works to bring wonderful
guests and programs each season. Some of the other
tasks we do for our members include coordinating
and managing the reading groups, creating Rhizome
and e-flyers, coordinating publicity with Institute
staff, managing our budget and more.
Volunteers are always needed. Please
consider becoming more involved with the Friends.
It’s a great way to engage with the Institute and to
get to know our members better. It’s fun and doesn’t
require a lot of time.
If you have special skills, especially graphic
design or page layout programs like Adobe
InDesign, please let us know.
Many thanks,
Deborah O’Grady

FRIENDS READING GROUPS
In the last few years our reading groups have grown
and have become meaningful extensions of our
Friends community. As usual the readings are chosen
by the members of each group and vary from group
to group. Our Peninsula group is seeking a new
host so if anyone is interested in being a volunteer
to host in his/her home, please contact Phyllis
Stowell (ptstowell@comcast.net). Any Friends
of the Institute member who is interested in joining
or visiting one of the reading groups, please contact
Phyllis as well.
We now provide five reading groups in the Bay Area:
East Bay in Berkeley; East Bay in Walnut Creek;
Marin in Sausalito; San Francisco and the Peninsula
(presently inactive). Each group is hosted by a
volunteer in their home. The groups are facilitated
by Co-chair Phyllis Stowell who is looking for an
assistant who would like to be more engaged with
book people.
Recent book selections include Black Sun: Alchemy
“All conscious psychic processes may well be causally explicable;
but the creative act, being rooted in the immensity of the
unconscious, will forever elude our attempt at understanding. It
describes itself only in its manifestations; it can be guessed at, but
never wholly grasped. Psychology and aesthetics will always have
to turn to one another for help, and the one will not invalidate the
other.” ~C.G. Jung, Collected Works, Volume 15, The Spirit in
Man, Art and Literature 135
of the Jungian community in our region.
“Life has always seemed to me like a plant that lives on
its rhizome. Its true life is invisible, hidden in the rhizome. The
part that appears above ground lasts only a single summer. Then
it withers away--an ephemeral apparition. When we think of the
unending growth and decay of life and civilizations, we cannot
escape the impression of absolute nullity. Yet I have never lost a
sense of something that lives and endures underneath the eternal
flux. What we see is the blossom, which passes. The rhizome
remains.”
