LEED Recogniton
The Challenger Motor Freight project has qualified for
LEED accreditation. LEED – which stands for Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design – is a system which
precisely evaluates environmental factors in design and
construction. The system was originally developed by the
United States Green Building Council, and has since been
adapted in Canada by the Canada Green Building Council
as a means to define “a green building.”
The GVCA’s Martha George told Exchange that this marks
the first time a LEED recognition has been acknowledged as
part of the Building Excellence Awards. To meet the strict
LEED qualifications, a construction project must incorporate
healthy, high-quality and high-performance advantages
along with reduced environmental impact. Principal categories
involved in the evaluation include sustainable sites,
nature, a very unique undertaking, with
three distinct, dramatically different
– distinct Chevrolet and Pontiac-Buick-
GMC branding under one roof. The
project rated especially high marks from
the adjudicators for quality and satisfaction.
Owner John Hanson noted, “Even
though the construction touched every
square foot of our existing facility, we
continued to do business throughout
the entire project. This would not have
been possible without the planning,
dedication and professionalism of the
Melloul-Blamey organization.”
In the same $750,000 to $2 million
Commercial classification, PM Contracting
of Kitchener won the Award
of Merit for the Region of Waterloo
International Airport Terminal
Expansion. According to PM Contracting,
“With the commencement of vacation
charters, the Region of Waterloo
Airport Terminal moved to a new level
of passenger and cross-border activity...
Expansion of the terminal to accommodate
180-seat international arrivals and
departures involved careful planning of
flow.... Adding further complexity to the
project were requirements for the full
accommodation of the Region‘s Customs
Services offices and enlargement
of Customs capacity to meet increased
inflow. Evolving standards for the
groundside/airside security line and
screening of passengers were incorporated
through specific upgrades to many
portions of the facility.”
A comment from a Regional engineering
staff member noted, the “Terminal
expansion is an ideal project to
highlight true building excellence.”
Two BE Awards were presented for
Commercial projects Over $10 million.
completed and turned over to the
owner prior to our original schedule.”
RIM’s Randy Renouf wrote, “We thoroughly
