DIRECTIVE BY THE MINISTER<br />

OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND<br />

POPULATION<br />

In response to the prevalence of severe acute malnutrition in <strong>Yemen</strong> that is one of the<br />

highest in the world, and considering that this type of malnutrition is contributing to<br />

more than half of under five mortality in <strong>Yemen</strong>, Ministry of Public Health and<br />

Population in collaboration with country offices of United Nations Children’s Fund<br />

(UNICEF) and World Health Organization has led the finalization and publication of this<br />

guidelines that describes the management of severely malnourished children and adults<br />

at inpatients wards and outpatients facilities. It is a result of consultancy workshop held<br />

in Sana’a on October 2008, attended by local expertises and facilitated by Dr. Michael<br />

Henry Nevin Golden, the emeritus professor at Department of Medicine and<br />

Therapeutics of University of Aberdeen in Scotland.<br />

Ministry of Public Health and Population hereby approves this document as a national<br />

guideline for the treatment of acute severe malnutrition that mandatory should be used<br />

by health staff involved in providing care for malnourished patients in Republic of<br />

<strong>Yemen</strong>, which comes under the guidance of political leadership, government and the<br />

national health polices. Therefore, this guideline is to be used and practiced at all health<br />

facilities in both public and private sectors effectively from January 2009.<br />
