About GBTA Academy
The GBTA Academy provides learning opportunities specific to the travel management industry to enhance knowledge and elevate
careers. Whether just beginning a professional journey or well-established in the industry, the GBTA Academy offers education
programs to advance professional growth. Learn business basics and update core proficiencies with the latest knowledge. The GBTA
Academy also presents the very first certification in the business travel industry — the Global Travel Professional (GTP).
Purpose of the Global Travel Professional (GTP) Certification Program
The purpose of the GTP Certification Program is to:
• Establish the body of knowledge for business travel professionals
• Assess the level of knowledge demonstrated by business travel professionals in a valid and reliable manner
• Grant recognition to business travel professionals who meet the eligibility requirements and have passed an examination
• Elevate the status and credibility in the business travel industry
• Encourage professional growth in the field of business travel management
• Provide employers with a tool to identify skilled, knowledgeable professionals
The GTP Certification is designed to elevate professional standards, enhance individual performance, and recognize individuals who
demonstrate the knowledge essential to the practice of the business travel professional. The GTP Certification Program must be independent
of any specific course or curriculum. In addition, continued competency is enhanced through ongoing renewal requirements
and certificants must adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct.
Validity & Reliability of the Exam
The GTP Certification examination is also designed to meet testing industry standards for validity and reliability.
• Validity is the degree to which the content of the examination reflects the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties
of a business travel professional in a competent manner.
• Reliability is the accuracy of the examination results; that is, the test and results are delivered in a consistent manner.
benefits of certification
The benefits of the GTP certification include:
• Professional growth and development
• Demonstration of your commitment to your career to peers, supervisors, and the public
• Increased recognition and career advancement
Certification Governance Board
The Certification Governance Board (CGB) is an independent board that oversees the development and administration of the GTP
Certification Program.
The purpose of the CGB is to administer a valid, reliable, defensible, and psychometrically sound examination. The CGB monitors
and revises policies, procedures, and materials related to the GTP Program.
The Examination
General Information about the Development of the GTP Examination
GBTA performs continuous job analyses to ensure certification testing reflects the most current requirements of professional practice.
The examination development follows internationally recognized and accepted procedures for content, validity, and reliability of
scores. Business travel professionals from across the globe are surveyed to evaluate the level of knowledge, skills, and abilities that
are expected within the industry. The examination questions are developed by subject matter experts based on the results from the
job survey.
To assist in this process, the GBTA Academy has partnered with a highly regarded professional testing service organization,
Professional Examination Service, that will assist in continuing to maintain and further enhance the GTP Certification Program.
Professional Examination Services
Professional Examination Services (PES) provides industry-leading credentialing, technology, and delivery solutions in support of
professional licensure and certification, training, and continuing professional education across a broad range of professions. As a
mission-driven, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the public welfare through credentialing, PES tailors its services to
each client’s unique needs. PES currently works with more than 60 professional associations and over 100 different licensing boards
in 62 U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions, and tests candidates in every geographic region of the world. All of PES’s clients receive either
full or partial services in support of certification of licensure programs, and most are either national or international in scope.
Eligibility Requirement
Candidates become eligible to take the GTP examination upon successfully documenting the following requirement:
• Minimum of three years of business travel related experience. Business travel related experience is defined as time spent
selling or procuring business travel services.
Detailed information on meeting the eligibility requirements must accompany the application.
Membership is not a requirement for eligibility to take the GTP examination. However, if applicants join GBTA, they will receive the
lower member application rate.
Statement of Non-Discrimination
The GBTA Academy endorses the principles of equal opportunity. Eligibility criteria for the examination and certification as a global
travel professional are applied equally to all individuals regardless of age, race, religion, gender, national origin, veteran status, or
disability.
Denial of Certification
If the applicant is deemed ineligible for certification, or if the documentation submitted does not meet the requirements listed, the
applicant will be notified in writing listing the specific reason(s) for the denial. Applicants may appeal in writing to the CGB within 30
calendar days of receiving the letter of denial.
If you decide not to appeal, you have 30 days to state that you do not wish to appeal the decision in writing and to request a refund.
Upon receipt of your written request for a refund, GBTA will issue you a refund minus a US$25 processing fee. Denials of eligibility
may be based on:
• Obtaining or attempting to obtain certification by fraud or deception.
Candidate Paper and Pencil Certification Handbook | 5
The Examination
Examination Format
The GTP examination is comprised of 125 multiple choice questions. Candidates will only be scored on 100 out of the 125 answered.
This is because 25 are considered pretest questions and are placed randomly throughout the examination. Pretest questions do not
affect the score and are used to collect statistical data and to ensure the test connects to the established test content. This process
is critical to ensuring that questions are statistically accurate and the item bank is continuously updated. Four possible answers are
provided for the multiple choice questions. Only one of the four answers is correct. There are no trick questions. There are no “all of
the above” and “none of the above” responses. The allotted time to complete the examination is three hours. Candidates are
advised to answer all questions.
Language
The examination is offered in English only.
Disabilities
Special arrangements shall be provided to candidates with a disability who submit a written explanation of their needs and
appropriate medical documentation along with their application. Please use the Accommodation Request Form found online or
in the back of this handbook: gbta.org/certification.
Candidates should also contact the GBTA Academy by March 10, 2013, if they have specific needs/supplies that will need to be
with them during the test administration (e.g., if diabetic candidates need insulin or candy or asthmatic candidates need an asthma
pump, etc.).
Preparing for the Examination
TEST CONTENT OUTLINE
Begin studying the test content outline as soon as you are interested in taking the GTP Examination. The best preparation is to
understand the core competencies and their application to business travel management.
Preparation Suggestions:
• Discuss each domain and task
• Assess your skills and knowledge
• Ascertain your strengths and weaknesses
• Have a plan for learning specific topics
• Sort the list according to your knowledge level
• Think about a question that could be asked for each topic
RESOURCES
The GBTA Academy developed a list of sample resources that candidates may use when preparing for the examination. This list
serves as a means to provide examples of resources available. The GTP Test Content Outline is the “guide” to the areas of knowledge
that candidates will be tested. Please check the GBTA website for the updated resource list at gbta.org/certification.
You may also have other business travel management related books and articles to reference. Studying and talking with other
experienced professionals is also a good way to prepare.
GBTA HUB
Another method of preparation is connecting with other GTP candidates through the GBTA Hub. This is a great way to interact and
exchange ideas. Connect with candidates at hub.gbta.org.
Please be aware that no two candidates have the same knowledge base or experience and these differences must be taken into
consideration when determining a study method. The best preparation is to understand the core competencies based on experience.
12 | The Global Travel Professional TM (GTP) Certification
On the Day of the Examination
Test Room Requirements
Before you take the examination, you will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement. If you do not sign and agree to the terms
below, you may be dismissed from the testing room or your examination results may be invalidated.
“Due to the confidential nature of this test, I agree that I will not copy
or retain test questions or transmit them in any form to any other
person or organization.”
Prior to taking the examination, candidates will be asked to complete a short survey.
Paper and Pencil Testing Policies
The following are the rules enforced at all paper and pencil administrations:
• You will receive a confirmation email no later than one week prior to the examination detailing your registration. You must
be properly registered, listed on the test site roster, and present a valid government issued photo identification (e.g., driver’s
license or passport) with candidate’s name on it in order to be allowed to take the paper and pencil examination.
• Candidates are required to bring to the test administration: a copy of the authorization to test email and a valid government
issued photo identification (e.g., driver license or passport). The names on both identification and authorization to test email
must match. If they do not have the proper identification, candidates should contact Heather Trusty prior to the test date to
determine alternative documents.
• Candidates are required to bring several #2 pencils.
• You should arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to the examination to allow sufficient time for you to check in and locate
your seat. Late arrivals cannot be admitted to the testing room. Candidates arriving more than 15 minutes after the
examination has begun will not be admitted and will have to pay a US$100 reschedule fee before they will be able to
reschedule the examination.
• Note taking is prohibited during the test.
• No reference material, books, papers, or personal items (purses, briefcases, coats, etc.) are allowed in the testing room.
• No electronic devices are permitted in the testing room, including telephones, signaling devices such as pagers and alarms,
personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other hand-held computers.
• You may bring earplugs into the testing room.
• No weapons or instruments that could reasonably be used as weapons may be brought into the examination room.
• No test materials or documents of any sort are to be taken from the examination room.
• Proctors are authorized to maintain secure and proper test administration procedures, including relocation of candidates.
• No questions concerning the content of the examination may be asked during the testing session.
• Food and beverages are not permitted in the testing room. Tobacco products and gum may not be used during the
examination.
• Breaks are not scheduled during the examination. Candidates are permitted breaks on an individual basis, but no additional
time is given to candidates who take breaks.
• Candidates will not be allowed to talk during individual breaks. Those who do will be denied re-admittance to the testing
room, forfeit all fees, and will not have their examinations scored.
• Candidates may not copy in writing or otherwise record or transmit to others any examination questions and/or answers or
other aspects of the nature or content of the examination.
• Candidates may not offer to assist or solicit assistance from other candidates, examiners, or those responsible for the
administration of the examination.
• Unauthorized visitors will not be allowed at the test site. Observers approved by GBTA may, however, be present during the
On the Day of the Examination
Dismissal
Any candidate who is observed engaging in any misconduct will be subject to dismissal from the examination, may be barred from
future examinations for a period ranging from one year to permanent dismissal, and may be required to forfeit his/her current
examination fee and/or period of eligibility.
Inclement Weather
If any candidate is unable to arrive at a designated examination site because of inclement weather, terrorist acts, a natural disaster,
or other unforeseen emergencies beyond control of the candidate as determined by the GBTA Academy, the candidate will be
allowed to take the examination during the next test administration without being charged a re-examination fee.
If for any reason the examination is unable to be administered, it will be rescheduled within a reasonable period of time. Candidates
may take the examination during the next administration without being charged a re-examination fee.
Examination Irregularities
Any problems, suspected instances of cheating, alleged inappropriate examination administration, environmental testing conditions
severe enough to cause disruption of the process, or other irregularities related to test administration should be addressed with the
onsite proctor or to staff. All such matters will be reported, investigated, and subject to further action based upon policies and
procedures adopted by the GBTA Academy.
Handling of Examinations
Professional Examination Services (PES) will take all available precautions to ensure the appropriate and secure handling of
completed examinations. In the rare and extreme case in which the examinations become lost or unreadable, candidates will
be required to undergo retesting, without being charged a re-examination fee. Candidates will be responsible for their own
travel-associated expenses for future examinations.
After the Examination
Notification of Results
Candidates are notified, in writing, of individual examination results within eight weeks of the test administration. For security
reasons, results will not be given over the phone or sent by fax or email. Please contact Heather Trusty in writing at
htrusty@gbta.org or at 123 North Pitt Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 USA if you have a change of address or name since the
examination administration.
Pass/Fail Score Determination
Candidate’s score reports will indicate a “Pass” or “Fail.”
Passing or failing the examination is based on a scale score. A scale score of at least 500 is needed to pass.
Scores are determined by converting the number of questions answered correctly to a scale score that ranges from 200–800.
You need a total of at least 500 to pass the GTP exam.
Passing candidates receive a score report stating a brief message about achieving a passing score.
Failing candidates receive a score report with diagnostic information that will show areas of strength and weakness. This information
is designed to help focus candidate’s study for subsequent examinations.
Appeals
Candidates who feel their examination score is in error may appeal their score. Candidates must send their appeal in writing to
GBTA within 10 business days after receiving their results. Appeals are to be sent to Heather Trusty at htrusty@gbta.org or to
123 North Pitt Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 USA. Candidates should include their name and ID number.
The appeal will be submitted to the Certification Governance Board (CGB) for review.
Retesting
In the event that a candidate fails the examination and wants to retest, the GBTA Academy requires the candidate to retest in the
next test administration.
Attainment of Certification
If an eligible candidate passes the GTP examination and accepts the GTP Code of Professional Conduct, they will become GTP
Certified and receive official documentation from the GBTA Academy.
Candidate Paper and Pencil Certification Handbook | 15
Appropriate Use of the Certification
An individual who has been granted the GBTA Academy GTP Certification may list the certification on stationery, websites, business
cards, and other promotional materials as:
• John Doe, Global Travel Professional TM
• John Doe, GTP TM
Should the certificant be suspended or withdrawn for any reason, the individual must immediately cease the use of the certification
designation and acronym on stationery, websites, business cards, and any and all promotional materials.
Recertification
The GBTA GTP Certification is valid for three years. To maintain the GTP Certification, you must obtain 50 Recertification Credits
within that three-year period. (Detailed information on this program will be available in 2013.)
If you don’t obtain the 50 Recertification Credits, you must retake the GTP examination in order to remain GTP certified. When a
certificant retakes the examination for recertification, no verification of experience is necessary.
