Introduction
The NBME offers web-based self-assessments for basic and clinical science content for US
and international medical students and graduates. The Comprehensive Basic Science Self-
Assessment (CBSSA) uses multiple-choice items based on information typically covered
during basic science medical education courses. The CBSSA is built to the same
specifications as the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, but
with fewer items. The Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment (CCSSA) uses
multiple-choice items based on information typically covered during the core clinical
clerkships. The CCSSA is built to the same specifications as USMLE Step 2 Clinical
Knowledge (Step 2 CK), but with fewer items. Since the content of CBSSA and CCSSA reflect
the format and content of USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK respectively, students may find the selfassessments
valuable as they prepare to take USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 CK. Participants are
provided with immediate feedback in the form of performance profiles which indicate the
relative strengths and weaknesses in general topic areas.
Content of the Self-Assessments
Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment
• Additional information concerning the topics covered in each content area can be
found in the USMLE Step 1 content description at www.usmle.org.
Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment
• The content of the CCSSA items resembles the content of items in USMLE Step 2
CK.
• Additional information concerning the topics covered in each content area can be
found in the USMLE Step 2 CK content description at www.usmle.org.
