PREVIEW OF EVENTS
NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Art and
Literary Club and the Mayana Gallery
invite the public to “Rusalia: Fertility
Rites of Spring,” an exhibit of photo
reproductions featuring the ancient ritual
celebrations as depicted on Ukrainian
bracelet jewelery from the Kyivan-Rus’
period (12th-13th centuries). Opening is
at 7 p.m.; exhibit tour and explanations by
Slava Gerulak. The exhibit will be on
view through July 8. Donation: $7.

Sunday, 1-5 p.m. The Mayana Gallery is

YONKERS, N.Y.: The Ukrainian Heritage
Festival will take place on June 15, 6-10
p.m.; June 16, 1-10 p.m.; and June 17, 1- 7
p.m. It will be held on the grounds of St.
Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church,
located at North Broadway and Shonnard
Place. The free-admission event features
outdoor entertainment, demonstrations of
Ukrainian arts and crafts, food, carnival
rides, amusements and exhibits. On
Saturday at 1-4 p.m. there will be discounted
ride tickets at only $1 per ride. As it continues
to grow from year to year, the festival
now draws over 10,000 people from the
local area as well as neighboring states. For

Society presents a lecture by Serhii
Kuzmenko of the National Security and
Defense Council of Ukraine, who is currently
with the Harriman Institute,
Columbia University, on the topic
“Russia’s Black Sea Fleet on the Territory
of Ukraine: History Decisions, and the
Current Situation.” The lecture will be
held at the Society’s building, 63 Fourth

“Midsummer Night Songs” workshops in
Ukrainian folk singing with Mariana
Sadovska, who for the last 10 summers traveled
through villages in Ukraine collecting
songs and documenting rituals. Discover the
folk voice in you. Learn ancient songs for
Kupalo, the pagan Midsummer Night Ritual.
You do not have to be able to read Ukrainian
or music to participate. The workshops are
on Saturday and Sunday, 2-5 p.m. Fee: $20

PITTSBURGH: A dinner-dance,
“Vyshyvani Vechornytsi,” commemorating
the 75th anniversary of the establishment of
the Pittsburgh branch of the Ukrainian
National Women’s League of America
(UNWLA), will be held at the Holiday Inn
in Greentree. The social hour will begin at
5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m., followed by
dancing to the orchestra Lvivyany. We
encourage everyone to wear his or her
embroidered ethnic costume during this
evening. After dinner, branch members will
have delicious multi-layered tortes for sale.
