From the Pastor's Desk 3 This weekend, at the Noon mass, the women and men who are in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will be formally “sent” to Holy Name Cathedral to be received by the bishop into their final period of preparation. They have been meeting regularly in preparation for their entrance into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil mass on Holy Saturday. As they enter into this final period of preparation, please continue to keep them in your prayers. At one mass each Sunday for the next 3 weekends, they will be prayed for in a special way in the “Scrutinies” rite in which they are asked to turn away from sin and temptation to fully embrace Christ Jesus. Bringing new members into the Church was the reason for the Lenten season. In using this special time of preparation for those getting ready to come into the Church, it became clear that all the current members of Church could also be well-served by renewing their own commitment to Christ, turning away from sin and being faithful to the gospel. Tomorrow evening at 7:30pm in church there is a Wedding Music Workshop for those planning an upcoming wedding. Many of the musical selections couples prefer will be played, as well as a selection of vocalists and instrumentalists to allow you to hear the variety of music available for your selection. Last weekend I was struck by a number of people who expressed frustration with themselves that it was so early in the Lenten season and they had already blown it. So, just a friendly reminder, Lent isn’t a contest you win or lose. It’s just a time of year when we get the chance to try to turn ourselves a little closer to God and enjoy the reconciliation that is always available to us through God’s love. Although the season does provide a retreat which moves us through the stages of forgiveness and reconciliation, it’s not about a “once-and-for-all-time” event – or we wouldn’t have it every year! So try to be a little more patient not only with others, but also with yourself. If you were already perfect, you’d be God. And what would that leave God to do? In last Sunday’s first reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, we heard a description of what formed the Chosen People when they were reminded, “My father was a wandering Aramean.” This sense of “homelessness” pervades scripture. On a cosmic scale, it is a reminder that our only lasting home is in heaven. But there are also practical implications in how we relate to one another and to all people. Every one of us got here from somewhere else. All we ever argue about is who got here before us! As the movement for a comprehensive Immigration Reform seems to be progressing, it is important to remember that those who now seek some redress in our nation are no different than you and me. They just arrived later! So basic questions of justice and fairness and equality always are part of this discussion. These are our brothers and sisters. We need to treat them as such.
