equipment, flame throwers, <strong>and</strong> grenades, may accompany the infantry.<br />

<strong>The</strong> advance through the town is likely to be made in<br />

bounds measured in terms of one or a few streets; after each bound<br />

the troops re-form <strong>and</strong> proceed to new objectives. <strong>The</strong> <strong>German</strong>s<br />

avoid the streets as much as possible <strong>and</strong> infiltrate simultaneously<br />

through back yards <strong>and</strong> over roofs, attempting to seize all high<br />

ground.<br />

If it is necessary for them to advance through streets, the <strong>German</strong>s<br />

move in two files, one on each side of the thoroughfare. <strong>The</strong><br />

left side is preferred, as it is more advantageous for firing righth<strong>and</strong>ed<br />

from doorways. Consideration is given to the problem of<br />

fighting against defenders organized not only in depth but also in<br />

height. Consequently the men, from front to rear, will be given
