The Scottish Furniture Makers Association
The Scottish Furniture Makers Association is a group of over 70
independent designer-makers working throughout Scotland. The aim
of the SFMA is to promote the finest in craftsmanship and design
through the work of its members, and to develop a wider public
awareness of contemporary furniture.
May 2013
Introduction to the SFMA
The SFMA was started in 2001 by 4 friends in need of company and inspiration.
They had experience of making a living, creating furniture by hand in their own
workshops and developing the maker-client relationship and so collaborating with
more makers seemed like a good idea.
Out of that small start, the SFMA now has a membership of over 70 designermakers,
all at different stages in their careers, doing what they love most with wood,
their hands and their imagination.
Now there is a website, www.sfma.org.uk which offers a shop window of their work
and is a comprehensive catalogue of all members. The activities of the organisation
are shared in real time on facebook, www.facebook.com/sfma3 and there is a
lively twitter conversation on @SFMA_furniture.
Scottish Furniture Makers Association
W: www.sfma.org.uk
FB: www.facebook.com/sfma3
T: twitter.com/sfma_furniture
Each year the SFMA organizes an exhibition showcasing members’ work, providing
an opportunity to meet new clients and talk about furniture. The annual show enables
members to see which directions others are taking and any new techniques being
used - thus developing a progressive approach to their work. Exhibition venues
have included Greyfriars church and the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh and the
Lighthouse in Glasgow.
In recent years members have exhibited at Ocean Terminal, Aberdeen Arts Fair,
the Scottish Homebuild Show, the Ideal Homes Exhibition and Visual Arts Scotland
(VAS). In 2012 the SFMA exhibited furniture in partnership with Scottish Textiles at
Clerkenwell design week in a Scottish Enterprise showcase of what Scottish creative
industries can offer. Members have also been shortlisted and won prizes at VAS,
TRADA and the Ketel One Modern Craft Project.
The SFMA has worked with Edinburgh City Council to use the magnificent elms,
felled as a result of disease, from well known sites in the city. As part of the
Local Wood, Local Maker project, furniture made from this wood is available for
purchase or commission. The SFMA members work with wood from many sources
but a natural partnership is with the Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers
(ASHS) whose access to suitable material allows for bespoke projects.
Scottish Enterprise and Forestry Commission Scotland create opportunities and
provide financial support to help our members realise some of their ambitions. The
association is run by volunteer members.
This directory illustrates the creativity that exists in furniture making in Scotland and
shows the number of people making their living from this creativity, and the diversity
of their endeavours.
Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers
www.ashs.co.uk
Grown in Scotland, made in
Scotland, benefiting the local
environment, community and
economy.
Most of the timber used in Scotland comes
from overseas, but homegrown hardwoods
can be as strong, versatile, durable and
beautiful as any imported timber and
they are much better for the environment.
Scottish timber is a beautiful resource
steeped with its own unique character and
heritage.
We can supply all your timber needs from
fencing to firewood, cladding, doors,
mouldings and interior joinery, furniture
timber, posts and beams.
ASHS members work together so you can
easily access your local timber. If your local
yard does not have it, they’ll know someone
that does.
