The Green Center, Inc.
The Green Center, Inc., a non-profit research and educational organization,
carries on the original purposes of the New Alchemy Institute (1971-1991),
including “ … to provide educational information and instruction on methods
to reduce environmental contamination and to restore natural waters and
landscapes.”
"Among our major tasks is the creation of ecologically derived human support
systems - renewable energy, agriculture aquaculture, housing and landscapes.
The strategies we research emphasize a minimal reliance on fossil fuels and
operate on a scale accessible to individuals, families and small groups. It is our
belief that ecological and social transformations must take place at the lowest
functional levels of society if humankind is to direct its course towards a
greener, saner world."
Earle Barnhart, Hilde Maingay
Earle Barnhart and his wife Hilde Maingay were staff researchers at New
Alchemy from 1972 to 1980, and were adjunct consultants and
educators at New Alchemy from 1980 to 1991. Their experience
includes teaching college-level courses, training interns, and publishing
the results of their research.
They live in an energy-efficient solar house attached to a large solar
greenhouse. The house has waterless composting toilets, solar electricity,
solar hot water and rainwater storage. They have grown food year-round
on Cape Cod since 1972, and have tested a wide range of agricultural
strategies suited to Cape Cod‘s conditions.
