Silver Jewelry Using Metal Clay
Silver metal clay is an exciting material consisting
artists will find this material fascinating, but no previous
experience is needed. Leave class with finished jewelry!
Sensational New Mexico Murders NEW!
New Mexico did not become a U.S. state for many
years. One reason for this was the violence. The West
was already known as the Wild West. In New Mexico,
violence mixed with economics, greed and politics to
become part of the culture. And the culture of violence
lasted much longer in New Mexico than elsewhere.
Among the many grisly murders, we will discuss John
Tunstall leading to the murder of Lincoln County Sheriff
Brady, the Territorial Supreme Court Justice in La Fonda,
the misadventures of the Archbishop Lamy’s nephew,
the shooting of the Santa Fe sheriff and more. Peter
Hiking Into Antiquity: Mesa Prieta
Petroglyph Site Off Campus
This is a three- to four-hour hike through some of the
most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta
is a major geological basalt formation overlooking the
Rio Grande just north of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo in
northern New Mexico. Along the mesa’s eastern slope
is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and
containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from
Archaic (5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous
for its many shield figures, abundant flute-playing
animals and historic images from Spanish settlers.
Students will be asked to make a $10 donation toward
the upkeep of the petroglyph area.
Geologic Hike of Otowi Peak and
Buckman Mesa Off Campus
Buckman Mesa and Otowi Peak stand prominently in
the middle of the Rio Grande Rift, providing spectacular
views of White Rock Canyon, the Jemez Mountains and
the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The extinct Otowi
Peak volcano erupted a variety of material, including
explosive steam-magma blasts, cone-building cinder
and fluid pahoehoe basalt. We will explore the eruption
history of this volcano, as well as discuss the volcanic
history of the Cerros del Rio field. This moderate-rated
trail requires good physical conditioning and balance, is
a five-mile round-trip and includes an elevation gain of
approximately 1,000 feet.
Moving from Supervising to Leading
Supervision is largely about providing order and structure
in service of high performance. Supervision is generally
not burdened with an act of creation; it is about
operationalizing goals and objectives. Leadership, on
the other hand, is largely about creating a future that is
distinct from the past. At some point, all supervisors need
to tap employees’ imaginations and creativity, which can
only be achieved through high engagement. This course
