A PLACE IN THE SUN
ONE STEP HIGHER IN SEA AND SUN
The Languedoc-Roussillon coast fills our senses with all its diversity, highlighting contrasts that remind us
that the Mediterranean is more than a beach-lined stretch of water. Here’s a guided tour of a preserved paradise.
Let’s get right to the point: the variety of our
coastline is astounding! For 200-kilometres it
unfurls in an arc stretching southward, where
so many visit-worthy places are concentrated
you’d think you were in an imaginary land.
From C for Camargue
to C for Côte Vermeille
Because the locals passionately love this region, they
fiercely defend it: the Mediterranean coast is a protected
area. Languedoc-Roussillon has resisted urbanisation of
this outstanding area’s 40,000 wild hectares, where
human activities respect nature’s balance.
Languedoc-Roussillon boasts exceptional plant and
wildlife. For example, the Camargue, a European
nature sanctuary, is home to bulls, horses and
sedentary and migratory birds. Where the “small arm”
of the Rhône flows into the sea, the hunt for memories
and pictures is open year-round. But of course,
the only things you’ll shoot are pictures. After all the
natural riches, you’ll be surprised to see workers
near Aigues-Mortes harvesting salt dried by the
mistral or trident-wielding camarguais cowboys
herding bulls as the sun sets.
Looking for authenticity? You’ll find it in the fishing
ports. You can buy fresh fish, shellfish and seafood
right off the boat in Grau-du-Roi, Palavas, Sète or
Collioure. Nor is there any shortage of pleasureboating
facilities. Port-Camargue, next to Grau-du-Roi,
has 20,000 moorings, making it one of Europe’s
biggest marinas. Sète, “the singular island”, where
Paul Valéry and Georges Brassens were born, is a
starting point for the Mediterranean’s great destinations.
The place where holidays
never take a holiday
The preserved, friendly, authentic Languedoc-Roussillon
coast features seaside resorts integrated into their
environment, open to the sea and countryside. Your
holidays can be either calm or action-packed.
Port-Camargue, La Grande Motte, Le Cap d’Agde, Gruissan,
Port-Leucate, Port-Barcarès and Saint-Cyprien open up
the doors to a rare freedom.
So have a good time! Enjoy all the nautical activities
that Languedoc-Roussillon has to offer: regattas,
cruises, sport fishing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, there’s
something for everyone. Gruissan and the Massif de la
Clape are year-round windsurfing paradises.
The light of Roussillon
They came to capture the light and colour of the Côte
TOWNS TO ENJOY
ONE STEP HIGHER IN CITY LIFE
People enjoy cities and towns more in sunny Languedoc-Roussillon,
where something in the Mediterranean air makes the people here very friendly.
The cities and towns of Languedoc-Roussillon
THE ANTIGONE QUARTER IN MONTPELLIER
Montpellier, the regional capital
Montpellier is a cultural, scientific and artistic
crossroads with an incomparable heritage. L’Ecusson,
with its Place de la Comédie, dominated by the opera
house, stretches all the way to the new Antigone
quarter designed by Ricardo Bofill. The narrow streets,
lined by many 17th- and 18th-century mansions, lead to
St Peter’s cathedral, the western world’s oldest medical
school, the Place Royale du Peyrou and the botanical
gardens created during the reign of Henry IV.
Nîmes, a beautiful, laid-back bourgeois city, displays
its ancient roots and, during the Whitsun and Grape
Harvest festivals, becomes an outpost of Spain, with
bodegas vibrating all night to the beat of peñas.
Uzès, near the border of Provence, proudly recalls its
episcopal, consular and ducal past with its castle and
lavish townhouses.
THE PALACE OF THE KINGS OF MAJORCA IN PERPIGNAN
Béziers, in the heart of the Languedoc wine country,
is marked by its cathedral that stands proudly between
L'Orb and the Canal du Midi. Béziers’s proximity to
Spain is also evident here: the bullfights in August
set the town on fire.
Preserved past, lively present
Nearby Pézenas is the birthplace of Molière and, more
recently, Bobby Lapointe. Its magnificent stately homes
and 17th-century mansions lining narrow streets
plunge you into a delightfully refined atmosphere.
The fabulous, perfectly preserved medieval town of
Carcassonne stands witness to 2,500 years of history
and 1,000 years of military architecture, with the
earliest fortifications dating back to the sixth century.
Narbonne, the Visigoth kings’ former residence and
capital of the Roman Septimania, is devoted to the
Mediterranean art of living and marks the dividing line
between Languedoc and Roussillon. The Archbishops’
Palace in the historic town and its 40-metre high
fortified tower stand on the ruins of the Gallo-Roman
ramparts and the Via Domitia, overlooking the town.
Perpignan, at the foot of the Pyrenees, is graced
with the heritage of the kings of Majorca. In the 20 th
century, Salvador Dalì called it the "centre of the
world" because Picasso, Mirò, Matisse, Derain and
Chagall worked there creating new styles of painting.
On the banks of the River Lot in Lozère, Mende still
has the proud look of a town watched over by an
imposing cathedral. The narrow, winding streets are
lined with oratories and old houses with well-kept
secrets behind heavy wooden doors.
WHAT HISTORY!
ONE STEP HIGHER
IN HISTORY
It’s impossible to mention Languedoc-Roussillon without talking about its history.
The traces of a prestigious, sometimes tumultuous past are everywhere
in this land of conquest and trade. Visitors discover majestic sites that leave
an indelible impression behind.
The roads to Saint James Compostella
An itinerary along the roads to Saint James Compostella is a good idea:
Languedoc-Roussillon has two main ones.
The one from Lozère crosses the Aubrac and Margeride, whereas the
southern route goes through Saint-Gilles in the Gard and Saint-
Guilhem-le-Désert in the Hérault.
The Cathar era
The Cathar era left its traces in the Aude at the Aguilar, Peyrepertuse,
Puilaurens and Quéribus citadels around the invincible fortress of
Carcassonne. In the 12 th century, the Cathars rejected the Old
Testament and Catholic rites, founding their own religion and “pure”
church, which earned them the nickname “the perfect ones”.
THE ABBEY OF GELLONE IN THE NATURE
OF SAINT GUILHEM LE DÉSERT
2,000 years? The roots of
Languedoc-Roussillon’s history
1,000years?
stretch back much further than
that: the first “Europeans” took up residence
at Tautavel, on the banks of the Mediterranean
450,000 years ago! Rows of menhirs on the
way to Lozère recall that the human presence
here dates back to the dawn of time.
The seal of Rome
The Greeks founded Languedoc-Roussillon’s vineyards,
but over 2,000 years ago the Romans shaped the wine
country’s landscape to make it look the way it does today.
The most striking example is the Via Domitia, the
Romans’ “southern highway” from Rome to Spain.
This road, Gaul’s oldest thoroughfare, had bridges,
oppida and milestones. Not only does it bear moving
witness to the Romans’ engineering genius, it is also
a running thread for the 21 st -century traveller. Two
essential places lie on this itinerary: Roman Nîmes,
with its well-preserved arena, temple and Magnus
Tower; and of course the Pont du Gard, which is a
UNESCO World Heritage site.
The High Middle Ages
History does not move in a straight line. You have to
skip several centuries before finding the legacy of
another major period in Languedoc-Roussillon’s
illustrious past: the Middle Ages.
Rambling through the area, a majestic citadel or
beautiful abbey will take you by surprise. You can
plan a route to see masterpieces of Romanesque
architecture, from Saint-Michel de Cuxa to Saint-
Martin-du-Canigou, Fontfroide and Valmagne or the
road to Saint James Compostella from Saint Gilles
du Gard to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, which are also
on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
An epic epoch
From the 15 th to 18 th centuries, Languedoc-Roussillon
enjoyed a prosperity that gave rise to the "Versailles
of Languedoc" (Pézenas) and Salses Fortress. But the
period’s crowning achievement was the Canal du Midi
designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet. The "canal between
the seas", which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site,
connects the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. It is an
engineering feat that still attracts many today.
You can wander from town to town realising that
the towns and villages of Languedoc-Roussillon hide
many treasures, such as the mansions and cathedral
in Montpellier and the Palace of the Kings of Majorca
in Perpignan.
ATTRACTIONS
ONE STEP HIGHER IN HERITAGE
“The World Heritage List includes 812 locations forming part of the cultural and natural heritage
considered as having outstanding universal value.” That’s how UNESCO presents these extraordinary
sites preserved for humanity and future generations. Languedoc-Roussillon is honoured
to have four of them.
A STOP ON THE CANAL DU MIDI
The Pont du Gard
The scale of the Pont du Gard, part of a Roman aqueduct that
once carried drinking water to Nîmes 50 kilometres away,
leaves you breathless: at 275 metres long and 48 metres high,
it has no equal. This impressive, majestic work of civil
engineering powerfully illustrates Rome’s domination over
the Mediterranean. Once, the Pont du Gard site was simply for
contemplating. Today, a museum, temporary and permanent
exhibitions and a botanical garden in an exceptional natural
environment invite travellers to linger.
THE PONT DU GARD, MAJESTIC ROMAN AQUEDUCT
The Canal du Midi
Could Pierre-Paul Riquet have imagined the legacy he would
leave by opening a waterway between the Mediterranean
and the Atlantic in the 17 th century? UNESCO calls it "one of
the modern era’s most extraordinary achievements.”
The canal paved the way for the industrial era and is a work
of art as much as a technological feat.
The fortified town of Carcassonne
Standing on ramparts dating from antiquity, Carcassonne
leaves you speechless the first time you see it. Its huge
medieval defence system, the perfect restoration by Viollet le
Duc, the castle, Gothic cathedral and narrow streets are an
enchantment that fills you with admiration.
The roads to Saint James Compostella
The roads to Saint James Compostella in Spain run
through all of Europe. Believers and non-believers
alike still take these spiritual itineraries, which are an
outstanding testament to the spread of Christianity
in the Middle Ages. Is it a coincidence that our presentday
motorways follow the same routes? Languedoc-
Roussillon has two of them: the “southern” and
“Pyrenean foothills” roads. The abbey of Saint-Gilles,
Montpellier, and the abbey of Gellone in Saint-
Artists and craftsmen have always flocked to sunny Languedoc-
Roussillon to celebrate their passion for creating. The former’s work
can be seen in museums, the latter in thriving markets and workshops.
Famous 20 th -century painters and
periods have left their mark on all of
Literature has not been neglected either.
Languedoc-Roussillon has always been
their time, including Molière in Pézenas,
Rabelais in Montpellier, Paul Valéry in
Sète and André Chamson of the Académie
Française, who depicted the Cévennes
like nobody else.
More recently, the great poets Georges
Historic!
The history of Languedoc-Roussillon is rich in
towering figures who changed their times, from
Vauban, famous for his fortifications, to Viollet le
Duc, who restored Carcassonne, Pierre-Paul Riquet,
creator of the Canal du Midi, Saint-Louis, founder
of Aigues-Mortes, Urban V, elected pope after being
bishop of Mende, and Jean Moulin, born in Béziers,
a famous painter and illustrator before becoming
the doomed Resistance leader.
Craftsmanship
Languedoc-Roussillon is a promised land for craftsmen
practicing their skills. In Vallabrègues, basketry was a veritable
industry, with nearly 450 basket-makers. Today, decorative
basketwork that brightens up home interiors has replaced
utilitarian items. The Pyrenees’s garnet mines spurred the
development of jewellery-making around Perpignan, where
craftsmen invented a cut that gives jewellery dazzling red tones.
In Saint-Quentin, pottery-making is a living heritage. Yesterday
it was a thriving industry; today it is a high-end craft. Potters
who have moved back here have created the "Maison de la
Terre" (“House of the Earth”). Anduze, a few kilometres away,
is a garden of Eden for ceramics: the glazed vases made there
are famous worldwide.
Stone has left a monumental mark everywhere. Languedoc-
Roussillon has breathed new life into the stone-cutter’s trade,
restoring its incomparable heritage. Examples include stone from
the Pont du Gard, slate from Lozère and granite from Cerdagne.
Last but not least, textile remains the symbol of Languedoc-
Roussillon’s flourishing past in craftsmanship. In the Cévénnes,
silk-making has left an indelible mark on the towns and villages
that have kept many traces of the trade. In 1860, many cloth
and espadrille workshops sprang up in Saint Laurent de
Cerdans in the Pyrenees. The museum of folk art and traditions
bears witness that this activity is still alive. Cloth "de Nîmes"
is universal today. In the Middle Ages, it was used to make sails,
tarpaulins and trousers. It was dyed blue to make Genoese
sailors’ uniforms. Later, in the nineteenth century, a Bavarian
immigrant, Levi Strauss, supplied it to adventurers who had
headed West during the 1848 California gold rush. “De Nîmes”
became "denim", “Genoese” turned into "jeans", and denim
blue jeans were born.
FOOD AND DRINK
ONE STEP HIGHER IN TASTE
In a place with so much diversity, there are
as many food traditions as areas. The palette
of flavours grows a little wider every step
traditional recipes and dishes by renowned
creative chefs.
The products of Languedoc-Roussillon come from an
SUNNY CUISINE ON THE BANKS OF THE
CASSOULET
In vino veritas…
Languedoc-Roussillon is not only the world’s
biggest wine-growing region; it’s also the
oldest. Over 2,000 years ago, sea-faring
Greeks imported wine and vine-growing,
which the Romans later improved. In the first
century, Pliny the Elder was already praising
the white wines of Limoux and "wines from
Béziers" that delighted Rome. Narbonne had
41 workshops for making amphorae that
carried wine to the four corners
of the Mediterranean.
They already had cork stoppers!
Delicious combinations
The region’s fresh products have given
rise to countless recipes with names that
tantalise our palates: aligot and tripoux
from Lozère, cassoulet from Castelnaudary,
gardiane de taureau from Camargue,
brandade from Nîmes, rouille and tielle
from Sète, Catalan cream, brasucade,
cargolade, bullinade and pâtés from
Pézenas, tapenades and more. Discover
them at markets, speciality shops and
restaurants with the "Restaurateurs de
France" label, which do an outstanding
job of preparing local home-grown
products to their best advantage.
From vine to wine
Vines are everywhere in Languedoc-
Roussillon, where growing wine grapes is a
passion and a tradition. Vineyards are
inseparable from history in this region.
Each village, or almost, has a cooperative
wine cellar. Between year-round sunshine,
soil with unique characteristics, and winds
that keep the vines healthy, Languedoc-
Roussillon is a promised land for wine.
Over the past several decades, emphasis
on quality has raised Languedoc-Roussillon
to the rank of the world’s greatest winemaking
regions, capable of competing with
the most distinguished vineyards.
Today, over 30 A.O.C. labels make up a
palette of white, red, rosé and sparkling
wines with rich bouquets and complex
flavours, not to mention the muscatels
and sweet natural wines that belong to the
great regional tradition. And the vins de
pays have come into their own by giving
each variety a new dimension.
SHADE IN THE ARENA AT 5 IN THE AFTERNOON
Acombined passion for horses and bulls is the
root of many events in the region, especially
courses camarguaises and bullfighting.
In the courses camarguaises, "razeteurs" dressed
in white try to pluck rosettes from between the
horns of Camargue bulls. Courage and thrills are
guaranteed! Anybody who witnesses this
spectacle in village arenas goes away electrified
with emotion! The course camarguaise is a real
sport, organised into championships. Languedoc-
Roussillon is dotted with statues of the bravest
bulls, who livened up village festivals for years.
Bullfighting comes from Spain and takes place
during the festivals of Nîmes, Céret and Béziers.
Unlike the courses camarguaises, in which the bull’s
life is spared, this is traditional Spanish bullfighting.
People dance, eat and drink until dawn during the
festivals.
Celebrations of rural customs include the transhumance
festival on the Lozère’s Aubrac plateaus.
