Hands of
Healing
Last year, the UGM clinics treated 954
patients who might otherwise have
ended up in area emergency rooms.
On a recent Wednesday afternoon, Dr.
Allen Seely hurried into the small waiting
room of the Union Gospel Mission
medical clinic carrying two large boxes of
donated medications. The blue plastic chairs
lined against the walls were already filled with
patients. Dr. Seely hit the ground running,
calling the first patient on his list within five
minutes of arriving. He had, in fact, been
running since 7 a.m. when his day started
at the Valley Rockwood Clinic where
he practices. He skipped lunch, came
straight to the Mission, and, in a whirlwind
three-hour stretch, saw 20 patients with
ailments ranging from dangerously high
blood pressure to pulled muscles. His
one break was to take a call from the
ER. By 4:30, the weariness showed in
Dr. Seely’s shoulders, but he took a
deep breath, held out his arms, and
smiled: “This is my life. It’s crazy
and nuts, but I think we have to be
crazy and nuts for the Gospel.”
God Loves to Heal
A man named Gary came to the Mission recently because he was going blind.
Gary wasn’t homeless – not yet anyway, but if he didn’t get help, he soon would
be. Gary had a job on a farm down in Nevada driving tractors, combines, and
other farm equipment, and he lived in a bunk house on the farm. But when Gary
began to have trouble plowing a straight line due to his failing eyesight, he knew
he needed help. He took a bus up to Spokane where he has a sister and found his
way to the Union Gospel Mission.
Gary saw one of the doctors in our medical clinic who facilitated his surgery
for cataracts. After a few follow-up visits for double vision, Gary headed back to a
waiting tractor in Nevada.
Now, that whole process took several months and numerous connections. It
was quite a bit more complicated than the methods by which Jesus healed the
blind when He walked the earth, but I’m fairly certain that He was no less delighted
with the results. God loves to heal.
In Matthew 11:5, Jesus described His ministry like this: “The blind receive sight,
the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are
raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.” Physical healing went hand in hand with Jesus’ message of
salvation.
The doctors and nurses who serve in our medical clinics are the reaching arms and healing hands of Christ,
and we are incredibly blessed by their dedication and enthusiasm. Michelle Kiddoo, one of the nurses, said she
volunteers because it is “an honor to be part of these men’s lives.” Susan Vowell, RN, said her great joy is to see the
women in the recovery program “begin to blossom and to participate in their journey,” and Dr. Seely said he wished
he could do more: “I can’t out-give God.”
I believe the Mission is a picture of the church caring for the poor in the way God designed. Every day, I see
people eagerly stepping up to participate and wanting to make a difference. Thank you for partnering with us to
bring healing to both the body and the soul. ●
A Musician’s Gift
Frank Delany and his wife, Maddy, had been playing
music for chapel services at the Mission for about a
year when Frank began to wonder if some of the men
in the recovery program might be interested in learning
to play the guitar. He offered ten weeks of free lessons
in folk guitar on Wednesday nights and picked up two
very eager students: Ronnie Rutt and Brandon Gwyn.
Ronnie is a songwriter who wants to learn how to put
his lyrics to music. Brandon said he has wanted to play
the guitar since he was a teenager, but “it’s just one of
those things I never followed through on.”
Frank, a producer for Spokane Public Radio and an
accomplished musician, loaned Ronnie one of his own
guitars and did some repair work on a loaner from the
Mission for Brandon. After the first 10 weeks, the three
men were having such a good time that Frank extended
the lessons into blues guitar. So, now, on Wednesday
nights the library at the Union Gospel Mission is filled
with the sound of men making music and pursuing
lifelong dreams. ●
Great to see Frank sharing his
talent with Ronnie and Brandon !

Dr. Charlie Wolfe has been volunteering
at the clinic for 13 years.
The Union Gospel Mission Men’s Shelter began offering
medical services free of charge to its homeless guests in
February 1992 when the clinic was opened by Dr. Dexter
Amend and his wife, Yvonne. Well over 10,000 patient
visits have been performed since that time by the
doctors and nurses who volunteer their time. Services
are provided on a first-come first-served basis once a
week on Wednesday afternoons. No narcotic drugs are
prescribed.
Dr. Charlie Wolfe, who takes one shift a month at the
Men’s Shelter and also serves on the Mission’s Board of
Directors, emphasized the two-pronged benefits of the
clinic. First and foremost, God’s love is demonstrated
in a very tangible way to men in great need. The doctors
and nurses carry out Christ’s ministry of healing.
Secondarily, the community benefits because basic
health needs and chronic conditions are handled
outside hospital emergency rooms and communicable
diseases are stopped before they spread to the larger
community.
Last year, the clinics of the Union Gospel Mission
treated 954 patients and gave an additional 141 tests
for tuberculosis. Dr. Wolfe suggested that if even half
of those 954 patients had ended up at the emergency
room for basic services, the costs (estimated at a low
$150 per visit) would have added up to $71,550 – costs
that would have been passed along, one way or another,
to paying patients.
Helping Hands Clinic
The Helping Hands Clinic at Anna Ogden Hall was
opened in 2005 to deal specifically with the medical
needs of homeless women and children. With a
registered nurse on staff two days a week and a
HANDS OF HEALING | page 3
volunteer doctor once a week, the pace and purpose
of the women’s clinic differ from that of the men’s.
“Three-fourths of what we do here is education,”
said Susan Vowell, the clinic coordinator, with the
three major emphases being: quitting smoking, eating
right, and exercising. Each woman receives a complete
physical, something the majority has not had in years.
Many residents have been treated for emotional
issues before coming to Anna Ogden Hall. “In the
system,” Susan said, “they’ve often been treated as a
number, and unfortunately, the most expedient solution
to their problems has been medication. When the ladies
come here, time is not a factor. They get to express their
needs. A relationship is built.” And a holistic approach
to their health is established.
Gratitude
Dr. Seely had to end his recent shift at 4:30 p.m. sharp
to run to another appointment, and though he worked
to the last possible moment, two men were still waiting
to be seen.
One was Clyde, who, although he had waited for
over an hour, wasn’t at all upset. On the contrary,
Clyde – who had seen Dr. Seely previously – sang his
praises: “He’s just awesome. He’s always going above
and beyond. He’s even purchased my medication out
of his own pocket. If I ever had the opportunity to do
something for him, I would . . . in a heartbeat.”
The other man was hoping to get a prescription
filled – a prescription for a two-hundred-dollar
inhaler. Dr. Seely gave him two: “Don’t thank me,”
he said. “Thank God. He brought them to me, and I
brought them to you.” ●
One World Spokane As part of the training taking place in the food services
department of the Union Gospel Mission, kitchen
supervisor, Steve Viers, and his crew were the guest
chefs at One World Spokane, 1804 E Sprague Avenue,
on Friday, June 18. One World Spokane is a non-profit,
organic, community kitchen whose goal is to provide
a dining-out experience to everyone in the community,
regardless of their ability to pay. Hence, customers pay
what they can.
Men from our kitchen crew gained real world
experience as guest chefs at One World Spokane.
The menu that night was a Latin feast: gazpacho;
braised pork tacos and vegan tacos with salsa fresca;
Honduran ceviche; black bean salad; Caribbean-style
beans and rice; and spice cake. The men did a fantastic
job and gained real world experience at the same time.
Delicioso! ●

Thanks to a generous grant from the Elizabeth Pool Foundation and an
anonymous donor, the Union Gospel Mission now has new Lang ovens.
Last year, the Mission served 235,714 meals, an average of 645 meals a
day. Oftentimes, a meal is a person’s first introduction to the grace offered
through our shelters and programs, and now the kitchen is equipped
with quality, reliable ovens to do the job right. ●
