Claremont Secondary – Course Guide 2013-2014 CAMOSUN COLLEGE TRADES EXPLORATION PROGRAM Do you want to know more about the trades and which one interests you? A Trades Exploration Program is offered by Camosun College (14 Sessions over 2 months). Students learn theory and practical skills in the following trades: Automotive Autobody, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Sheet Metal and Welding. Ask in the Career Centre for registration information. SAANICH SCHOOL DISTRICT 63 - HAIRDRESSING PROGRAM 12-Month ITA Apprenticeship Program offered by: Vancouver Island University in Partnership with: Saanichton Individual Learning Centre & Saanich School District This Vancouver Island University/ Saanich School District Hairdressing Career Program offers an exceptional educational program! It is a Dual Credit program, which means you can earn both high school and university course credits. Our program combines a first class instructional salon with professional Vancouver Island University instructors to create the perfect setting for excellence in career education. Learning is accomplished through practical instruction and student participation with equipment, tools and materials normally used in the trade. We create a positive environment with a comprehensive curriculum of superior quality, incorporating the use of interactive power point and DVD technology. This revolutionary technology, combined with superior education, results in the ultimate hands-on experience. Students quickly advance to performing services on clients in our own Saanich Hair Salon – Studio 63. STUDIO 63 TEACHING SALON There are practical Work Based Training Components. Students will be involved in Work Experience 12A/12B as well as Secondary School Apprenticeship Programs. Students frequently compete in local, provincial and national competitions. It is a year-long program – from February 1, 2014 until January 3, 2015. There is a one week spring break and a two month summer holiday. Claremont Secondary – Course Guide 2013-2014 ~ BUSINESS EDUCATION ~ INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS 10 (2615) This course is an introduction to the many aspects of the world of business. Topics covered include: Business Organization, Economics, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Business Planning, and Financial Management. The final project requires that students create a business plan and then run a micro business. Students interested in further studies in Business and Commerce should take this course. MARKETING 11 (3666) Marketing skills and strategies are applicable to every career. This introductory course is designed to provide you with an opportunity to develop an understanding of how businesses bring their products, services and new ideas to potential buyers. The Four P’s (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) will be discovered through a variety of practical activities, projects, case studies and computer software applications. You will gain an appreciation of how marketing affects you as a consumer, understand the importance of marketing skills for entrepreneurial success and learn how marketing helps individuals and firms become and remain successful. The practical activity-based nature of this course provides a framework for creative application of marketing concepts. The course will integrate marketing principles in a variety of school and community based projects. ACCOUNTING 11 (3636) This course is a “must” for any student intending to enter a business course at a college or university level. It provides a fundamental understanding of basic accounting practices. Topics covered include: Ledgers, Double entry accounting systems, Trial Balance, Income Statements, Balance Sheets and Analysis of the financial status of enterprises based on financial statements. This is a self-paced course so students must be self-disciplined and able to work both independently to complete the required work within a time frame. Students must successfully complete Accounting 11 before registering for Accounting 12. ACCOUNTING 12 (4639) This course is intended for students who intend to pursue post-secondary studies in Accounting, Finance, Business Management or Commerce. Advanced concepts of Financial Accounting encourage students to develop analytical decision-making processes and expand accounting skills. Students will further develop their knowledge of the computer accounting program “Simply Accounting” as it applies to small business. This is a self-paced course so students must be self-disciplined and able to work both independently to complete the required work within a time frame. 22
