Collections (later and current files)
Vertical Files, 1869-2007 (inclusive), 1950-1990 (bulk).
4 File Cabinets; 20.54 linear ft.
Arranged alphabetically by subject in folders.
The files include historical documents that pertain to the
University and its various activities, such as the original
charter for AddRan Christian College and a list of graduates
from the college’s very first matriculating class, for
example. Also included are materials produced by various
campus departments and organizations (i.e. ROTC, the
Alumni Association, English Department, etc.) as well as
flyers from various art exhibits, film festivals, and numerous
other campus events. Several subject files have been added
over time, such as “Horned Frog Mascot,” “Minorities at
TCU” and “Student Life.” Newspaper clippings, university
bulletins, publications, correspondence and pamphlets make
up the bulk of the material in these files.
The exact provenance for the vertical files is unknown. The
Reference Department began collecting the materials
housed in these files prior to the existence of a Special
Collections Department at TCU. The materials are
primarily TCU related and were created with university
resources and/or for university purposes.
Description of the Files
The vertical files began as a way for the reference librarians at TCU to organize the
various ephemera they acquired regarding the history and development of the University.
At some point, these files became part of Special Collections due to the nature of the
materials and their historical value.
The files include historical documents that pertain to the University and its various
activities, such as the original charter for AddRan Christian College and a list of
graduates from the college’s very first matriculating class, for example. Also included
are materials produced by various campus departments and organizations (i.e. ROTC, the
Alumni Association, English Department, etc.) as well as flyers from various art exhibits,
film festivals, and numerous other campus events. Several subject files have been added
over time, such as “Horned Frog Mascot,” “Minorities at TCU” and “Student Life.”
Newspaper clippings, university bulletins, publications, correspondence and pamphlets
make up the bulk of the material in these files. The folders are arranged alphabetically.
