This was my second trip to S<strong>in</strong>gapore and on both occasions I have seen<br />

modern developments, plus a large number of new and amaz<strong>in</strong>g tourist<br />

dest<strong>in</strong>ations and attractions. This has been made possible, <strong>in</strong> part, thanks to<br />

foreign <strong>in</strong>vestment and it is this development that leaves a last<strong>in</strong>g impression<br />

on visitors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g me s<strong>in</strong>ce my first visit four years ago.<br />

The latest modern splendour is Mar<strong>in</strong>a <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Sands</strong>, an <strong>in</strong>tegrated hotel<br />

and resort that br<strong>in</strong>gs ano<strong>the</strong>r layer of architectural beauty to S<strong>in</strong>gapore. It is<br />

also an important milestone for <strong>the</strong> parent company Las Vegas <strong>Sands</strong> Corp,<br />

<strong>the</strong> world’s top-flight cas<strong>in</strong>o resort company, as it helps enhance <strong>the</strong> travel<br />

experience to S<strong>in</strong>gapore. I took time out with my photographer to spend<br />

a few days explor<strong>in</strong>g a stunn<strong>in</strong>g design that symbolises a new gateway<br />

for S<strong>in</strong>gapore to maximise <strong>the</strong> unmatched luxury leisure experience <strong>in</strong><br />

enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, bus<strong>in</strong>ess and shopp<strong>in</strong>g all under one roof.<br />

As I waited to check-<strong>in</strong>, my m<strong>in</strong>d was awash as I tried hard to f<strong>in</strong>d a<br />

sentence fitt<strong>in</strong>g enough to describe <strong>the</strong> lobby I was stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>. Words<br />

such as gigantic, stunn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>credible, creative, splendid, flowed like water<br />

through a showerhead, spray<strong>in</strong>g my head with catchy headl<strong>in</strong>es. The lobby<br />

was certa<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> busiest part of <strong>the</strong> hotel and it is here that guests are first<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced to <strong>the</strong> luxury modernity and upscale service await<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m. I am<br />

sure this welcom<strong>in</strong>g will be a hit with millions of visitors from around <strong>the</strong> world<br />

and fur<strong>the</strong>r streng<strong>the</strong>n S<strong>in</strong>gapore’s hand as <strong>the</strong> centre of Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asia.<br />

Mar<strong>in</strong>a <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Sands</strong> is actually a result of a<br />

global endeavor. The design team of Hirsch<br />

Bedner Associates (HBA), a global leader <strong>in</strong><br />

hospitality <strong>in</strong>terior design, worked <strong>in</strong> close<br />

collaboration with <strong>in</strong>ternationally renowned<br />

architect Moshe Safdie to deliver one of <strong>the</strong><br />

most stunn<strong>in</strong>g leisure and convention venues<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. HBA was tasked with com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up with an <strong>in</strong>terior design for <strong>the</strong> guest rooms<br />

as well as creat<strong>in</strong>g an area to host meet<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

<strong>in</strong>centives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE)<br />

events. The aim is to catapult <strong>the</strong> reputation<br />

of Mar<strong>in</strong>a <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Sands</strong> as <strong>the</strong> gam<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

convention dest<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asia and<br />

to fulfill <strong>the</strong> vision of a truly <strong>in</strong>tegrated resort.<br />

The hotel has attracted a lot of attention due<br />

to <strong>the</strong> challeng<strong>in</strong>g design of its three towers,<br />

which form <strong>the</strong> image of a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese character.<br />

The eastern towers slope to a maximum of<br />

52 degrees and at 70 metres or <strong>the</strong> 23rd<br />

floor connect to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> towers, which <strong>the</strong>n<br />

extends to higher floors or <strong>the</strong> 55th storey.<br />

The curv<strong>in</strong>g shape of <strong>the</strong> towers presented<br />

HBA with <strong>the</strong> opportunity to create more than<br />

100 different room types that are f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong><br />

different shapes.<br />

The entire complex is f<strong>in</strong>ished to maximise<br />

a dramatic transformation between day<br />

and night as characterised by <strong>the</strong> graceful<br />

curves and <strong>the</strong> extensive use of w<strong>in</strong>dows<br />

and atriums. As a result, night and day at <strong>the</strong><br />

Mar<strong>in</strong>a <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Sands</strong> will create totally different<br />

experiences for <strong>the</strong> guests as well as to<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> harmony with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> complex. All<br />

guest rooms are similarly designed to evoke a<br />

harmony among <strong>the</strong> various spaces and also<br />

to stress <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegral part of <strong>the</strong> architecture.<br />

The three <strong>in</strong>novative hotel towers house a<br />

total of 2,561 guest rooms and <strong>the</strong> icon of <strong>the</strong><br />

hotel at <strong>the</strong> summit is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sands</strong> SkyPark, an<br />

outstand<strong>in</strong>g recreational surfboard-shaped<br />

terrace connect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> three build<strong>in</strong>gs. The<br />

SkyPark is, at 343-metres wide, twice <strong>the</strong><br />

size of a football field and features <strong>the</strong> unique<br />
