Figure 3 gives examples of different software packages that can be used with their respective graphics type. Some of the software packages listed can be used for both 2-D and 3-D drawing as well as static and dynamic graphics. Figure 4 gives an example of each of the four graphics types. Courtesy Walt Disney Company 2D Static Courtesy homestarrunner.com 2D Dynamic (moving) Summary Since animated characters have become significant components of entertainment and advertising, using them in the classroom can become another tool for reaching students who have visual and kinesthetic learning styles. Students can relate concepts that they see daily to their learning process. Using animation and teaming skills allows students to experience information and communication technologies in a way that is both engaging and educational. Students learn to work in teams and solve a multitude of problems through the creation of animations. Animation is just one more tool that can be used to emphasize and understand the importance of planning and teamwork in creating solutions to information and communication challenges. Animation can be used to engage learners of all ages in a wide variety of educational environments. Students can use these techniques to better delineate, communicate, and share their ideas in numerous subjects. In addition, the techniques learned while creating animations foster creative thinking and improve students’ planning and interpersonal skills. Animation Creation Design Brief Objectives The students will be able to (TSWBAT): • Research various types of animation • Plan an animation using a plan of work, storyboard, and script • Work as a part of a team • Use various communication technologies to complete a storyboard and animation Anticipatory Set/Focus Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of static images that create the illusion of movement. The animation process has undergone amazing changes since the introduction of digital imagery and computer hardware and software. Animated characters are an integral part of life as a consumer in this computer age. Have you ever seen a cartoon on TV or the World Wide Web that you thought was entertaining or educational? Imagine that you and several classmates are part of an animation team at the station. You are expected to research, design, and create an episode of a new animated TV show that is called Animation Creation Station. Your animation must be educational and entertaining for a group of students your age or younger. You have some decisions to make with your partners. Who is your audience? Who are your characters? What type of animation do you want to use? How much time will it take to plan and create your animation? What lesson do you want to teach? What materials do you need? What’s your budget? Challenge Create an educational or entertaining animation miniepisode, 5-10 minutes long, that incorporates the proper use of a storyboard, script, animated characters, digital imagery, computer software, and hardware. Materials Materials will vary depending on the level of the students and computer software/hardware available.
