Vito wins Van of the Year 

Vito adds another trophy to the cabinet 

The all-new Vito has once again come up 

for praise. This time picking up Delivery 

Magazine’s prestigious Best Van of the Year 

Award for 2011 and the tag, ‘the best Vito ever 

released onto the Australian market’. Something 

our customers will no doubt attest to. 

The award comes on top of the model hitting 

the ‘million mark’ (see pages 29-30), production 

wise, and is no small feat given the raft of 

competition in this segment of the market. 

Safety, fuel economy and cost were highlighted 

as key considerations in this year’s awards. 

The first two, in particular, forming such an 

important part of a buyer’s decision, according 

to the magazine, with cost also a major factor. 

“Mercedes-Benz has significantly improved 

the Vito to the point that it’s now the best 

specification it’s ever offered,” said Delivery 

Magazine’s editor Chris Mullett. “With new 

engines and transmissions, plus revised rearaxle 

ratios, these vans are more fuel efficient and 

offer greater safety inclusions than ever before.” 

With this in mind, Delivery Magazine 

was particularly impressed with the lineup’s 

‘matching of the right engines and 

transmissions with the correct rear-axle ratios’, 

noting it as a key part of its decision. These 

aside, the range’s plethora of options – namely 

its adaptability to meet the demands of a wide 

range of specific applications – and the model’s 

full fluid automatic transmissions were also 

singled out. The latter being particularly handy 

when driving in heavy, congested city traffic. 

“With the one-millionth Vito having just been 

produced, it’s fantastic to top that milestone off 

with this prestigious award as Australia’s best 

van,” said Kolja Rebstock, Managing Director 

of Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles. 

The award also reflects the fact that the 

range has set the benchmark for workplace 

safety, with its five-star ANCAP rating, when 

fitted with optional front window airbags, as 

well as its exceptional eco-friendly credentials, 

thanks to its next generation EURO 5 engines. 

Rebstock also went on to say: “We’ve worked 

hard to provide the best van in Australia, and 

this award clearly recognises this. Very simply, 

the Vito is the ‘Mercedes-Benz’ of vans.”

Hello and a warm Spring welcome to our 

latest issue of Love Your Work. 

You might recall that we spoke of our 

optimism for 2011 in the first issue this year. 

Well it appears our feelings were well founded. 

As many will know we launched the eagerly 

awaited new Vito to customers, dealers and 

media at the world renowned Philip Island 

Circuit in February. Guests were informed 

of the key changes and then invited to really 

test the range in a controlled closed circuit 

environment. Continue reading inside for a 

full summary of the week-long event. 

Since then the feedback has continued to 

be overwhelmingly positive and reached new 

heights when the Vito came out as the clear 

winner amongst almost 30 other vans to be 

awarded the Australian 2011 Van of the Year 

by Delivery Magazine. So in the same year 

when the one-millionth Vito has just rolled 

off the production line, things are looking 

very good for the Vito range both locally and 

internationally. If you have not had a chance 

to look over the new Vito as yet then we, along 

with Delivery Magazine, suggest you do! 

We often remind others that, whilst easily 

overlooked, vehicle safety has always been 

one of our key messages. Adriana, the owner 

and manager of a Sydney-based mobile Barista 

service, was unfortunately involved in a major 

accident with a truck. Emergency services 

attending the scene were surprised that she 

survived and that she now has the opportunity 

to tell of her experience in this issue. 

As well as safety, we also work hard to 

achieve sustainability goals with our vehicles. 

While we’ve previously covered the Sprinter 

NGT and the Vito E-CELL, our passenger car 

colleagues have just finished driving three 

B-Class F-CELLs around the world producing 

zero-emissions in the process (yes, zero) - 

another first for Mercedes-Benz and a glimpse 

of what the future may hold. 

In closing, 2011 is proving to be a challenging 

year for many sectors (except for miners!). 

However despite some economic hurdles our 

Van range continues to achieve positive sales 

results so we, along with our dealer group, 

would like to express our gratitude to both our 

new and loyal owners for their trust in us and 

our products. We are pleased to have you as 

part of our Van Family and hope that your next

On course for better safety 

Journalists looked on in amazement as was held in 1994 to showcase the arrival of 

a pair of Mercedes-Benz S 600 Saloons the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). A 

completed lap after lap on the frozen surface control unit in the second car collected and 

of Lake Hornovan in Sweden. The driver of one compared a stream of data — such as degrees 

of the test cars was visibly struggling to hold of steering wheel lock and lateral acceleration 

his line, repeatedly having to countersteer — recorded by sensors. It then used this data 

urgently to prevent the rear from sliding away. to apply carefully calculated brake impulses

In 1987, the first test cars equipped with an 

early version of the system, known as ‘lateral 

slip control’, were sent out for trials. At the 

same time, the new technology also had to 

prove itself in a driving simulator. Here, 80 

car drivers were asked to drive at precisely 

100km/h over a country road with treacherous 

patches of ice lurking on four different corners.

the test drivers had no chance of avoiding 

a skid-induced accident. However, with the 

active safety system engaged, all the virtual 

tests ran without drama. 

ESP made its debut in the S-Class in 1995, 

and since then Mercedes-Benz has fitted 

almost all of its passenger cars and vans 

with the system as standard, setting a new 

benchmark in active safety.

Cold comfort 

New Vito surpasses all expectations in Finnish ice testing 

Picture this. Motoring editors from across 

Scandinavia. The all-new Vito. And 

a handful of competitors in the three-tonne 

class. Throw in snow, ice and insanely low 

temperatures, and you start to get an idea. 

This year’s running of Finnish motoring 

magazine Auto tekniikka ja juljetus’s annual 

Arctic Van Test didn’t disappoint, temperatures 

hit well into minus double-figures. 

Each model in the class was put to the sword in 

what could best be described as some of the most 

extreme driving conditions – at the cold end of 

the scale – on the planet. To cut to the chase, 

the Vito came up trumps, and by a country mile. 

Categories included handling, fuel 

consumption, load capacity and all-round 

performance. Cold region-specific factors were 

also tested, in the form of cold-start ability, as 

well as heating and mirror/window defrosting. 

Much more extreme to what we’re used to here 

in Australia, our southern-most regions included. 

The Vito’s success can largely be attributed 

to the new-generation’s array of impressive 

features. Leading the field, the van’s ultrarefined 

new engine particularly impressed, 

thanks to newly developed balancer shafts, 

as did its fuel-economy and environmental 

credentials. 

The model’s new six-speed ECO Gear manual 

transmission was also praised, citing its 

exceptional performance which complements 

the engine’s low fuel consumption and emissions 

values. Significant points also came from the 

Vito’s ability to seamlessly deliver excellent 

driving dynamics and handling throughout 

testing, a testament to the model’s completely 

new, optimally configured suspension package. 

Specifics aside, it was Vito’s overall 

reliability and robustness in the harshest of 

conditions that swayed the Finnish, Swedish 

and Norwegian testers – being the complete 

package, so to speak. 

Inside and out 

Inside, the new-generation improves on 

a host of user-friendly internal features, 

giving the driver and passengers alike, 

unprecedented comfort and convenience, as 

well as an even higher-quality atmosphere 

throughout the cabin. Also noteworthy are 

the new shift lever, push-buttons in the 

upper array of the centre console and the 

introduction of Bluetooth® and multifunction 

steering wheel (not available on 110 CDI). 

Outside, the Vito’s unforgettable face 

comes courtesy of new exterior highlights, 

new reflector headlamps framing the radiator 

grille, along with the standard daytime 

running lamps and fog-lamps integrated into 

the housing. It’s also interesting to note that 

the running lamps, for instance, have their 

own light source.

Five-star lifesaver 

Viano once again proves its worth in the most critical of circumstances 

When on the road every day and clocking 

up serious kilometres, safety is nonnegotiable. 

Even more so when you’re regularly 

covering distances such as Sydney to south-east 

Queensland, or Sydney to Canberra. 

“Money is no issue when it comes to your 

life,” said Adriana Silva, who was involved in 

an accident with a truck in her Viano last year. 

“It saved my life, absolutely. The Viano did 

everything the marketing spiel said it would do 

– on the dot. It was incredible.” 

The owner and manager of Sydney-based La 

Barista walked away – virtually unscathed – 

from the accident, which involved her Viano 

ending up under the rear of the truck and 

written off. 

“When police and firefighters arrived on scene, 

they were surprised I’d managed to survive the 

impact, let alone avoid serious injury.” 

Silva was on her way back from Canberra (to 

Sydney) when it happened. Sitting behind a large 

huge truck, which was about 30 metres ahead, 

they’d both slowed down for some ducklings on 

the road and waited for them to cross. 

“As soon as we were clear and started picking 

up speed again, I checked the mirrors to 

overtake, getting up to speed, and then checked 

my blind-spot. When I turned around, I saw the 

truck stopped again, leaving me nowhere to go. 

I really thought I was going to die. I also had my 

eyes open during the whole experience, even 

seeing the airbag deploy, and ended up under 

the truck’s right rear side. The Viano’s front-end 

pushed back a metre. 

“I could feel my feet were okay, but the 

steering wheel had pushed back to my tummy 

(I’m fairly short and have to have the seat quite 

forward) and my knees were trapped. And I 

couldn’t open the driver’s door or window. Then 

I saw smoke coming out of the front. Somehow I 

was able to reach across to the passenger side to 

open the window and move the seat back, which 

meant I could wriggle out and get out through 

the passenger window. The only injury I ended 

up with was some ligament damage in my knee, 

which was only short-term.” 

Silva and her partner bought the Viano three 

years ago from Mercedes-Benz Sydney, choosing 

the model purely down to safety, given that 

they’re on the road so much. 

“Safety is huge,” she said. “Which is why 

we’ve continued to buy Mercedes-Benz when 

we’ve expanded our fleet. The other thing was 

that the Viano was such a comfortable car to 

drive long distances in, and looks good when 

you’re visiting customers.” 

La Barista specialises in providing a unique 

coffee experience at big corporate events 

throughout Australia and abroad, with more 

than 60 regular clients on its books, including 

STRYKER, Microsoft and Johnson & Johnson. 

This typically involves transporting equipment 

that consists of a coffee machine, grinders, 

coffee carts. 

“Most of the time I fly to where the event is 

being held,” said Silva. “Logistics can be difficult 

sometimes, though. Where it’s too cost prohibitive 

to transport my equipment or where transport 

companies simply don’t service, I drive.” 

The Sydney-based company also roasts its 

own coffee, sourcing beans from Brazil and 

Jamaica, and produces around 700kg of coffee 

in any given week. This means it needs more 

than one van on hand, and currently has two 

Mercedes-Benz models, a Vito and a Sprinter. 

“If it’s a small order, we use the Vito,” Silva 

said. “If we’re transporting equipment around, 

we use the Sprinter. The Viano was more for 

visiting customers and taking samples. It’s such 

a nice model, with its leather interior. Great to 

pick interstate customers up from the airport in. 

And the seven seats also came in really handy. 

“We’re getting replacement Viano at some 

point in the near future. With all three models, 

we’ll be completing the Mercedes-Benz van 

collection.”

on offer around the country. And what better 

way to spend a Saturday or Sunday? Courses

Dirt bike riding 

Dirt bikes are a lot of fun. What’s more, they’re 

great for getting the adrenaline up and one of 

the best ways to take in the beauty of Australia’s

Around the world in 125 days 

Emissions-free convoy powers across Australia and beyond 

Underpinning just why 

fuel-cell technology 

is such a viable alternative 

in the search for a more 

environmentally friendly fuel 

source, the Mercedes-Benz 

F-CELL World Drive was 

successfully completed in 

June. Taking in some 5,300 

km of Australia along the way. 

To set the scene, three 

Mercedes-Benz B-Class 

F-CELL vehicles departed 

company headquarters in 

Stuttgart, Germany, on January 


30, with the monumental task 

of traversing the globe on fuelcell 

technology alone. 

At the heart of the project 

was the desire to draw 

much-needed attention to 

the development of hydrogen 

fuel infrastructure – mobile 

hydrogen filling stations, 

in other words. This, the 

company predicts, is what’s 

needed to fast-track the 

introduction – and use – 

of emission-free fuel-cell 

vehicles around the world. 

“One major advantage of 

fuel-cell technology is that it 

can be used in a wide variety 

of vehicles – from passenger 

cars to buses,” said Professor 

Herbert Kohler, Head of 

E-Drive and Future Mobility in 

the company’s Research and 

Pre-development Department, 

and also Chief Environmental 

Officer of Daimler AG. “It’s 

not only sustainable for short 

distances – like with public 

transport, for example – but 

also for longer ones.”

Team 

Along the journey, the 

B-Class F-CELLs were 

supported by none other 

than four Sprinter and 

Viano vans, each with a 

specific purpose. Refuelling 

is difficult in isolated areas. 

The solution? A specially 

constructed Sprinter 519 CDI 

4x4, equipped with a special 

mobile refuelling unit. The 

team also made use of the 

remaining three Sprinter’s 

practical storage capabilities 

to carry spare parts for the 

F-CELL vehicles. And finally, 

the Viano vans were used 

to transport journalists, 

engineers and the TV crews, 

in comfort and style. 

When you consider the 

30,000 km covered over 125 

days, the F-CELL World Drive 

was a mammoth journey, 

to say the least. In all, the 

eco-friendly convoy passed 

through 14 countries, crossing 

four continents in the process. 

To give you some idea of 

just how environmentally 

friendly the fuel cell-equipped 

B-Class models are, their 

average fuel consumption 

in the preceding leg, which 

took in the vast expanse of 

the United States, came in 

at 1.15kg of hydrogen per 

100km. This was came down 

as low as 0.88kg per 100km 

over one stage of the journey. 

The 13-day Australian leg 

started in Sydney in March 

before finishing up in Perth, 

taking in Melbourne and 

Adelaide, and much of the 

southern coast’s spectacular 

scenery, including Victoria’s 

Great Ocean Road. Adorned 

in bright green, the B-Class 

F-CELLs were hard to miss. 

From there, the procession 

made its way to Shanghai, 

China, before travelling 

some 14,000km across the 

Euroasian continent en route 

back to Stuttgart. 

The logistics involved were 

mind-boggling, particularly 

getting from continent to 

continent by air. Everything 

had to be loaded according to 

a precise plan – the three cars, 

all accompanying equipment 

for the journey and a crew 

of 20 specialised technicians. 

What’s more, there were also 

the varying safety regulations 

from country to country to 

consider, each of which 

proved to be quite a challenge, 

logistically speaking.

A league of their own 

Reigning NRL premiers form winning trifecta with Tynan Motors and 


Rugby league is big 

business, particularly 

when you’re at the top of the 

NRL. 

Week in, week out, there’s 

an enormous of amount of 

work that goes on behind the 

scenes. The logistics involved 

in transporting game 

equipment for the next fixture 

means that having a safe, 

reliable van is imperative. 

With this in mind, St 

George Illawarra Dragons 

has partnered with Sydneybased 


dealer, Tynan Motors, over 

the years, and took delivery 


of their second Sprinter early 

this year. 

“We have a long-standing 

relationship (with Tynan 

Motors),” said St George 

Illawarra Dragon’s CEO, 

Peter Doust. “They promote 

their brand with ours, and 

we generate a great deal of 

exposure on TV, in print and 

digital media. 

“In 2009 we were Minor 

Premiers and again in 2010 

before winning the coveted 

NRL premiership. To cap it off, 

the club took out the prestigious 

World Cup Challenge in 

February. We’re also currently 

the most popular club in New 

South Wales and one of the 

top-three brands in the NRL.” 

The club’s Sprinter 319 

covers some serious kilometres 

throughout the season. 

At least four times a week, 

it heads to Wollongong, south 

of Sydney. What’s more, it 

travels to all Sydney-based 

games, as well as fixtures 

in both Newcastle and 

Canberra. It carries all the 

essentials, basically. Things 

such as playing gear, first-aid 

equipment, portable massage 

tables, exercise bikes, hit 

pads, eskies, drink bottles, 

towels – you name it. 

What’s more, there 

are three to four club 

staff on hand to lug 

everything around. 

“Street Impact in 

Carringbah were 

responsible for putting 

on the St George 

Illawarra Dragons 

livery,” Doust said. 

“Which attracts a lot 

of attention – from 

tooting horns, flashing 

lights through to the 

occasional salute from 

posties. And there are always 

people who want to get their 

photos taken with the van.” 

Reliability and comfort 

played a critical role in the 

club’s decision when looking 

to upgrade their previous 

van, a Sprinter 312, with the 

club very happy with Tynan 

Motors’ recommendation to go 

for the Sprinter 319. 

“We’re lucky to be able to 

support a local team such as 

the reigning NRL champions, 

a winning relationship we 

hope to continue for many 

years to come,” said Tynan 

Motors’ Light Commercial 

Manager, Ian Watts. “The 

Dragons, Tynan Motors, 

Mercedes-Benz Vans – it’s a 

winning trifecta. 

“The club previously had 

a Sprinter 312, so this time 

around we suggested they go 

with a six-cylinder model, in 

this case being a Sprinter 319 

medium wheelbase.” 

Given the type of 

equipment involved, Tynan 

Motors engineered and fitted 

a centre middle seat, along 

with correctly engineered 

seatbelts and including 

matching trim, a cargo barrier 

to stop gear moving forward 

and to protect passengers, 

as well as shelving to safely 

transport particular items. 

The seats were required to 

accommodate three staff 

when travelling to games. 

“The Sprinter’s power is 

fantastic, especially when 

you compare it to what we 

had in the past,” Doust went 

on to say. “Its size has its 

advantages, too.” 

St. George Illawarra Dragons history 

Under its present name, the club is a 

result of the amalgamation of the St Georges 

Dragons, which was established in 1921, and 

the Illawarra Steelers (established in 1982), 

and first took to field in 1999. St George has 

a rich history winning 15 premiership titles, 

including 11 in row from 1955 to 1966. 

The St George Illawarra Dragons have 

the most season ticket-holder members in 

the NRL. And as you’d expect, the club’s 

supporters are some of the most passionate, 

committed in the league, many travelling 

far and wide to watch their team play – 

interstate and international games included.

Tried and tested 

Vito launch offers unique insight into more refined, sophisticated line-up 

February saw the official launch of the 

all-new Vito at Phillip Island, Victoria, 

unveiling its myriad of new features and 

revealing more-competitive pricing. 

Media from around the country, key 

customers from Australia and New Zealand, 

and Mercedes-Benz staff were given the 

opportunity to put the Vito through its paces 

on the world-famous racetrack. 

Suffice to say it didn’t disappoint. The 

general consensus? Outstanding refinement, 

handling, power and key safety features. In 

other words, a whole lot more sophisticated. 

The southern state’s weather didn’t disappoint, 

either, ensuring everyone got a taste of Phillip 

Island’s penchant for rain. 

Mercedes-Benz Vans Senior Executive, 

Campbell York, was on hand to launch the allnew 

Vito line-up. 

“Quite simply, we’ve taken a great van and 

made it even better,” Campbell York said. 

“The model range has been rationalised to 

remove some unnecessary complexities and 

make selecting the appropriate model easier 

for customers and to ensure them a quicker 

delivery time, where speed to market is critical.”

professional driving instructor in the

passenger seat, participants were given free 

licence to push the line-up to its limits. 

This involved drag racing down the track, as 

well as circuit laps to test emergency braking 

and maneuverability through slaloms and 

skidpans. Drag racing, in particular, offered 

both insight and practical demonstration of the 

new model’s many improvements, including 

better engine management, gearbox selection 

speeds and chassis dynamics. 

Participants also had the opportunity to 

drive on experimental skid-control tyres, 

flown in from Sweden for the launch (orange 

tyres pictured on previous spread). 

“As the vehicle’s speed increases, the co-efficient 

grip through these tyres decreases, allowing 

very difficult road conditions to be simulated 

at very low, safe speeds,” said Mercedes-Benz 

Chief Driving Instructor, Peter Hackett. 

These gave testers a real-world feel for the 

model’s ADAPTIVE ESP® (Electronic Stability 

Program) system. They were also asked to turn 

the ESP off and hit the skidpan and take a sharp 

turn – just to put things into perspective. 

The other consensus to come out of the event 

was that, under a variety of driving conditions, 

the Vito puts some passenger cars on the market 

to shame as far as comfort and ergonomics go.

Milestone 


On to the next milestone 

Two generations and one-million Vitos 

Mercedes-Benz has set numerous 

milestones over the years, and added 

another to the collection earlier this year. The 

millionth Vito rolled out of the company’s 

Vitoria factory in May, with the plant’s 40 

employees and manager, Emilio Titos, on hand 

to commemorate the monumental occasion. 

The Spanish plant also saw the birth of 

model, back in 1995, the year the Vito TO was 

launched. Since then, the increasingly popular 

van has been sold in 80 countries and served 

countless satisfied customers around the world. 

Production increased from year to year – 

hitting 75,000 units at the turn of the millennium 

– before the arrival of the second-generation 

Vito in 2003, which marked the model’s first 

milestone. To say the Vito’s been a success would 

be an understatement. Particularly here in 

Australia, with its diverse model range proving 

a hit with the local market and exceeding 

customer expectations time and time again. 

Another milestone, of sorts, the new generation 

Vito now boasts an array of new features. 

As you’d expect, changes to the interior 

reflect the company’s desire to make the 

model even more convenient for operators, 

along with further improving its level of 

comfort and much-lauded look and feel. 

From the outside, the model takes on a new 

slant, design wise. This comes in the form of new 

headlamps, with daytime driving lights, bumper 

and grille, all as standard across the range.
