TEXAS ASSOCIATION
FAMILY, CAREER AND COMMUNITY LEADERS OF AMERICA
1107 West 45 th Street, Austin, Texas 78756
phone: 512-306-0099; fax: 512-442-7100; website: www.texasfccla.org
Dear Chapter Members and Advisors:
It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in a special opportunity—the chance to be part of the Texas
movement of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapters that are “taking on”
one of five areas and becoming certified FCCLA Peer Educators. The five areas to be addressed are: STOP
the Violence –Students Taking on Prevention - a peer-to-peer outreach initiative that empowers young
people to recognize, report and reduce the potential for youth violence; Fraud/Financial Education –
teaching peers to be more aware of deceptive practices in the marketplace and how to financially prepare
for their future; Civic Engagement-teaching peers the importance o being involved in the community and
the value of being a registered voter; Student Body – helping fight the epidemic of obesity in our state and
addressing Teen Safe Driving and Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety-support safe driving
amongst teens.
To participate in the program, sponsored by Texas FCCLA, your chapter needs to send a “Chapter Peer
Education Team” to the state training event. Your chapter’s team should consist of at least one advisor and
not more than 2 members for each of the program areas. We ask that you do not bring students that were
trained last year. Schools that did not fulfill their commitment last year will not be allowed to participate
this year.
The training will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16, 2012 at the Dallas Sheraton Hotel,
400 North Olive Street, Dallas, TX 75201; (214) 922-8000. The training sessions will be from 4:00-10:00 p.m.
on Saturday with a cash dinner buffet available between 6:30-7:30 p.m. The optional buffet on Saturday
will cost each participant $20. Please sign up if you will enjoy dinner with the group so we can get an
accurate meal count to the hotel. Sunday will begin with a morning Vesper service at 7:30 a.m. The peer
education meeting will start at 8:00 a.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m.
Transportation costs and Sunday’s dinner will need to be paid by the chapter. There is a $10 per person
registration cost but FCCLA will cover the sleeping rooms for Saturday night and Sunday’s lunch cost for
those attending the peer education conference. A total of 325 people will be able to participate in the peer
education conference this year and participants will be selected on a first come, first serve basis
The registration form must be completed and submitted by August 31, 2012. All hotel reservations will be
made for you; however, if a school does register for the training, and not attend, the chapter will be charged
the cost of the hotel rooms and materials ($150 per person). Name changes will be accepted until
September 10, 2012
During the 12 hour state training event, Chapter Peer Education Teams will be
provided in-depth information on the topic of the student’s choice
provided career opportunities available to members
taught presentation skills
taught or re-taught the FCCLA planning process
forming plans for local training and community service/service learning projects
practicing training skills
learning evaluation skills
learning the reporting method that must be made to the state FCCLA office
After returning from the training, your Chapter Peer Education Teams will be responsible for sharing the
program with other chapter members, collaborating with school and community resource people,
conducting local action projects and tracking results. Documentation of these activities will be required to
be submitted to the state FCCLA office.
New this year is a Career Showcase on Monday, September 17, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. – 3 p.m. where
business and educational institutions will feature careers and skills that are learned and taught from various
career choices. Featured areas will be child development, interior design, housing, culinary arts, hospitality
