A huge crowd of supporters
dedicated to eradicating cancer
attended the annual Cattle Barons’
Stetsons and Stilettos Ball at the
Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort,
Feb. 21. The evening’s festivities
consisted of dining, dancing, silent
auctions and gaming, in order
to raise money for the American
Cancer Society.

A diamond in the social season, the
Seventh Annual Commodore’s Ball
and 2009 Change of Watch on Jan.
24 at the Marco Island Yacht Club
was an elegant event. Uniformed
members of the Bridge met guests
at the front door ushering them up
the staircase to the gala. Pomp and
decorum permeated the Change
of Watch as the burgee of outgoing
Commodore Dean Heard was
lowered and incoming Commodore
Paul “Silky” Sullivan’s burgee raised.

The Marco Island Foundation for the
Arts held an inaugural scholarship
fundraising fashion show Feb. 3
featuring clothing carried by Island
Woman of Goodland. Venue was the
Marco Island Yacht Club, attendance
was about 90, and the function was
such an overall success that President
Sandi Johnson suggested a repeat
performance next year. Immediate
applause cemented her proposition.

The Third Annual Evening of
Elegance, sponsored by the Marco
Sunrise Rotary, was held Feb. 7 at
the Marco Island Marriott Beach
Resort. This year’s theme, dubbed
Heart to Heart, encompassed the
primary program of the Gift of
Life, which helps needy children
receive corrective heart surgery at
participating hospitals.

The 20 th annual Bill Owen Classic
was held Jan. 24 and 25, ending with a
cocktail reception at Eagle Creek. Since
the inaugural tournament, the charity
has raised more than $1.2 million
and has primarily applied those
funds to educational scholarships for
Collier County students. This year,
Ken Venturi, former pro golfer and
TV analyst, presented his Venturi
Cup to Marco’s Dick Shanahan,
Tom Rourke, Dean Webb and Allan
Cooper for a low gross score of 59.
More than 230 golfers participated in
the tournament.

Thousands of residents and visitors
turned out for Celebrate the Arts, an
annual extravaganza hosted by the Art
League, Marco Island Center for the
Arts, Feb. 28 and March 1. Attendees
strolled by booths where 95 artists
displayed original works. Painters,
sculptors, photographers, potters and
jewelers from all over the United States
joined local artists selling their works
and vying for thousands of dollars
in prizes. Musicians and dancers
entertained the crowd, and there was
an antique car show.

Walkers gathered at Tigertail
Beach, Feb. 28, to participate
in the American Cancer
Society’s Making Strides
Against Cancer beach walk.
This was the walk’s 16th year,
which celebrates the lives
of those touched by cancer.
The 3.5-mile walk along the
beach raises much-needed
funds for the American
Cancer Society. The funds are
used for research, education,
advocacy programs and
patient support to defeat
cancer.
