OUR NEW TSUNAA PRESIDENT:
Julia Askew, ’81, ’85
Julia Mills Askew, the new Texas
Southern University National Alumni
Association (TSUNAA) president, is
excited about using her leadership and
experience to move the TSUNAA
forward.
Currently an assistant principal in
the Aldine Independent School District,
Askew brings 31 years of professional
Julia Askew
leadership to the alumni organization.
With a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education and
Master of Science in Physical Education from TSU, this alumna
knows why the TSUNAA is so important. Here, she shares her goals:
ITSUN: What inspired you to run for the TSUNAA presidency?
Julia Askew: I ran for president because I love my alma mater. I
wanted an opportunity to build and strengthen the TSUNAA.
ITSUN: What are your top three goals for TSUNAA?
Askew: I would like to help increase alumni membership, alumni
participation, and chapter effectiveness.
ITSUN: What are the benefits of joining TSUNAA?
Askew: Athletic, social, and networking events and opportunities;
discounted home and auto insurance through Liberty Mutual;
discounts at the TSU bookstore and with other vendors, not to
mention event invitations and career resources. Also, it gives all
alumni the chance to give back.
ITSUN: What are the TSUNAA’s most daunting challenges and
greatest opportunities?
Askew: One challenge is getting alumni to become more involved
in giving back financially to TSU and the Association. We have the
power and opportunity to let others know what our motto,
“Excellence in Achievement,” at Texas Southern really means.
ITSUN: How has TSU impacted your life and career success?
Askew: If it hadn’t been for TSU I wouldn’t be where I am today.
It prepared me with the survival skills and work ethic needed to be
competitive and successful in life, as well as for my professional career
in education, as a teacher, coach, and administrator.
ITSUN: What aspect of TSU do you think is most under-valued and
how do you plan to bring that to light?
Askew: The recognition of the excellent education TSU provides and
the credit it deserves for the successful graduates it has produced that
are in key positions in society. With every opportunity we have as an
alumni association, along with Connie Cochran, director of alumni
relations, we will showcase TSU and our students’ excellence.
