HECUS x-ray SYSTEMS
Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering
what is saxS/swaxS?
Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (S/WAXS) are non-invasive analytical
techniques to investigate the structure of non-crystalline or partly crystalline
materials. Both the supra- or macromolecular domain as well as the interatomic
distances in small molecules or crystals are investigated.
SwAXs
SAXs
Fields of Application
– Polymers
– Liquid Crystals
– Powders & Cream Formulations
– Biopolymers
– Biomaterials
– Catalysts
– Nanomaterials
– Coatings & Films
Beyond the most frequent applications in R&D laboratories, the techniques of SAXS/SWAXS/GISAXS,
previously the domain of specialized laboratories or large synchrotron radiation facilities, are also gaining interest
in the fields of routine quality control (QC), safety and security screening, and process analytical technology (PAT)
in chemical, food&feedstuff and pharmaceutical industry.
HECUS Product family
overview
THE BASIC DESIGN CONCEPT
– Modular system architecture for multiple user modes
– Point-focussing or line collimation optics
– One common chassis design – no vacuum-tube changes
– Central command & control unit for all instrument functions
– High flexibility in sample environment: temperature, pressure, gas atmosphere, ...
S3-MICRO: THE HIGH-END SOLUTION
The ultimate in X-ray microfocus technology with extreme brilliance, high flux and low divergence. Various
detector options: 1D-PSD, 2D-CCD, or 2D pixel detector. No vacuum-tube shuffling for changing resolution
HECUS Product family
S3-MICRO: the high-end star
s3-micro
S3-MICRO is powered by an ultra-brilliant point microfocus source (GENIX-Fox 3D,
Xenocs, Grenoble), exclusively designed for Hecus. It provides the highest X-ray flux
of any SAXS system presently available on the market. With a brilliance of 10 10 , it
matches that of bending-magnet synchrotron SAXS beamlines - at a source power of
only 50 Watt. Thus S3-MICRO opens entirely new perspectives for laboratory x-ray
scattering.
Never before has a compact SAXS system reached such
brilliance: S3-MICRO bridges the gap to synchrotrons.
A revolutionary concept of point-microfocus optics
and extremely clean block collimation brings classical
synchrotron techniques to the home laboratory, such as:
– surface nanostructure analysis (GISAXS)
– high-pressure SAXS/SWAXS,
– fast T-scanning SAXS/SWAXS
– mirofluidics
Lipidic Nanofilm – GISAXS (100s)
Revolutionary is also the extreme energy efficiency
of S3-MICRO: powered by a 50-Watt microfocus X-ray
source it relaxes the cost-of-ownership problem. With
S3-MICRO you can save tons and CO 2
and money
otherwise wasted in the environment.

Ultimate Performance: S3-Micropix
– even shorter measurement times
– zero background
– ultimate linearity
– radiation hardness
SYSTEM 3: line-collimation cameras
system 3
System3 is a modular camera system that can be operated in both, line- and pointcollimation
mode on conventional sealed-tube or rotating-anode generators.
For measurements on isotropic, unoriented samples such as dilute macromolecular
solutions, nanopowders, polymers, or ceramic materials, line collimation X-ray optics
are a viable and economical alternative to point-focussing optics. Reliable software
tools are available for the necessary corrections of the scattering curves.
SYSTEM3 SWAXS
This high-resolution SWAXS
system was particularly designed
for real-time, simultaneous smalland
wide-angle measurements
on powders, liquid crystals and
polymeric nanomaterials. Two
linear position sensitive detectors
‘I always thought SAXS was for specialists only,
…until I discovered Hecus X-Ray Systems’
SAXS SYSTEMS FOR THE DEMANDING USER
Hecus X-Ray Systems, founded in 1992, is
traditionally specialized on innovative system solutions
for X-Ray nanostructure analytics. The strong focus on
small-angle X-ray methods – the Otto-Kratky heritage
– serves a wide community of researchers and
engineers, who need SAXS and related techniques
as practical and reliable tools in their challenging
laboratory practice, and who want to use the
techniques routinely.
BRILLIANCE – BRIDGING THE SYNCHROTRON-GAP
Synchrotron radiation facilities, the ultimate in high-end instrumentation, are an important technology source
for Hecus systems. Innovations in X-ray sources, optics, sample environment, detectors, computing and
automatisation, have led to the latest generation of laboratory SAXS systems (Hecus S3-MICRO) that approach
the brilliance of synchrotron bending-magnet SAXS beamlines – at bench-top instrument dimensions.
THE HECUS TECHNOLOGY & APPLICATION POOL
Hecus can draw on an unequalled pool of collaborations and partnerships with leading research institutions: the
Institute of Biophysics and Nanosystems Research (IBN, Graz), the ELETTRA synchrotron facility (Trieste, Italy),
the Research Centre for Pharmaceutical Technology Engineering RCPE (Graz), and numerous prominent industry
partners in X-ray instrumentation as well as in chemical and pharmaceutical production worldwide.
The experience gained in these activities directly flows into instrument development providing the customer with
practice-proven, innovative solutions, such as:
– microfocus SWAXS
– modular 1-D or 2-D detection
– SAXS/SWAXS zoom
– high-pressure SAXS
– T-scanning SWAXS
