marginal tear to half title; some small pale<br />
marginal stains but a very nice, uncut copy.<br />
First edition, second issue, omitting Byron’s<br />
name from the half title and title pages and<br />
with “almost” misspelled on the final line<br />
of page 36. Sherwood, Neely and Jones<br />
advertisements dated March and November<br />
1818. One of the earliest issues that can be<br />
acquired.<br />

Originally published as Lord Byron’s work, it was written by<br />
Polidori, his physician, during a summer spent with Byron, Shelley,<br />
Mary Shelley and Claire Clairmont in Switzerland as an evening’s<br />
amusement (during which Mary Shelley conceived the idea for<br />
“Frankenstein”).<br />
Precursor of the romantic Gothic vampire genre of horror stories,<br />

Canapetta linen with large cover label. Fine copy of the only<br />
comprehensive book on the Austrian poster during its golden age<br />
with scholarly text and 21 color plates (some tipped-in) and 176 full<br />
page and vignette illustrations. Artists include Klimt, Schiele, Moser,<br />
Klinger, Olbrich, Löffler and many others.<br />

PLAKAT.<br />
Dresden; Gerhard Kühtmann, 1897. 4to, original pictorial wrappers<br />
contained in a modern clamshell box of green linen with gilt-lettered<br />
morocco label. Spine a little worn and the contents are loose in the<br />
wrappers but a very nice untrimmed copy. Numerous text illustrations<br />
and 52 color lithograph posters by Belgian, French, English,<br />
American, German, Austrian/Hungarian and other European poster<br />
artists, including Chéret, Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen, Grasset, Mucha,<br />
Van Rysselberghe, Rassenfosse, Will Bradley, the Beggarstaff Brothers<br />
and many others. Text includes a chapter on Japanese woodcuts,<br />
which influenced many Art Nouveau poster designers. $6000<br />
