Units for the 3-day Fall
workshop with one spring
call back.
• Training included coastline
and boat field experiences
as well as classroom
curriculum development
workshop with NOAA
representative.

10 Teachers from 4 local schools including a
Montessori school—Grades PreK-12 (AP
Biology)
3-Day August Institute with 1 callback day in
November. All received 3 graduate credits from
Salem State University
We visited 4 sites within the Merrimack River
and Parker River watersheds, ashore and afloat
“What is a watershed?” “What is ‘meaningful’?”
Teachers tasked with determining what the
educational experience would be for their
students.
Five teachers took their students into the field in
the fall = 200 kids outside in the watershed in
October.
Newburyport school made the watershed the
entire 5 th grade cross-curricular theme for the
Fall semester

that included classroom sessions,
field work, and a half-day floating lab
program on the Piscataqua River,
followed by a call-back session.
• Workshop activities were designed to
help the teachers incorporate
watershed and water quality topics
into their classroom curriculum, as
well as to plan learning experiences
that can take place on board a boat.
