Expecting the best out of more than just our Students!
Welcome To CSU’s 35th Annual Sale!
We are proud to welcome Clayton Shonk as the new Livestock Coordinator. He works alongside Dr. Jason Ahola
and the Seedstock Team to organize the CSU bull sale.
“It is our goal at Colorado State University to provide a working model of proper livestock care,
handling, housing, and production. Genetic progression, proven performance, and easy temperament
are all characteristic of the bulls produced from the ARDEC cowherd. By combining an impressive and
extensive amount of experience from faculty, staff, and students we produce bulls that are backed by the
forefront of beef production research. Feed efficiency and genetic performance are two key components
to modern low cost production. The calves produced at ARDEC are tested for both and much more. Our
bulls and cattle are bred to meet the current demands placed on beef producers and lead them forward
in a progressive operation. It is with pride we look forward to our seedstock animals supporting those
who support us… the beef producer.”
Feed Efficiency In Your Herd
Most of the variable cost of beef production can be attributed to feed and feed supplementation, which means that
reducing the amount of feed required for the beef production enterprise would translate to greater profitability for
individual producers. Recently, input traits such as feed intake have been of increasing interest. Research has shown that
there is a significant genetic component to feed intake and related measures of feed utilization. The key to implementing
genetic improvement is collection of individual feed intake. Currently a national database is growing due to the increase
in centralized testing facilities that have the capacity to measure individual feed intake records. This growing database
will be used to provide producers with EPD and index tools to improve feed efficiency in their herds. Estimates show
that with sufficient data collection and use of selection,
feed and feed supplementation costs could be reduced by
millions annually in Colorado alone. Selection tools that
include feed intake would also include output traits such
as growth rate and other output performance so that a
balanced, multiple trait approach to genetic improvement
could be used. Similar to other traits, producers should
not use single trait selection for reducing feed intake
without considering other economically relevant traits to
their operation.
Rouse Ranch Angus Bulls
For the first time in 2011, the Colorado State University Beef Improvement Center (BIC) is offering a handful of Angus
bulls via the annual CSU ARDEC bull sale on March 26th in Fort Collins. These bulls were produced at the CSU BIC near
Saratoga, Wyoming (also known as the Rouse Ranch or the One Bar Eleven Ranch), which was generously given to CSU’s
Department of Animal Sciences in 1986 by John E. Rouse, a long-time Wyoming cattleman.
The department has utilized the CSU Beef Improvement Center for over 20 years as a major beef breeding research center.
The ranch runs 400 purebred Angus cows, with over 60 years of performance data, including within-herd EPDs.
The CSU Beef Improvement Center will be holding its 25th Annual Yearling Angus Bull Sale on Monday, March 28th and
will sell 50 calving ease bulls that have been Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) tested at 7,200’ elevation. Lunch is at 11:30
am, and the sale will start at 12:30 pm. For information,
contact: Mike Moon or Duane Wood (307-327-5339) or
The 2011 Seedstock Merchandising Team welcomes you to our annual production sale. We appreciate all of
your support and hope our bulls and heifers meet your expectations at every level. For years the seedstock
team has worked hard to build quality into the CSU ARDEC herd and we are proud that we have the
opportunity to bring you the best cattle that CSU has to offer. We look forward to seeing you at the sale and
hope for your continued support in years to come.
Hannah Todd - I am a senior Animal Science major and I grew up on a family owned cow/calf operation
in Crawford, Colorado. I am planning to become a large animal veterinarian and go back to my hometown
industry which will be beneficial to me both as a veterinarian and in a ranch management position.
better perspective and gain knowledge of the seedstock industry. After graduation I will start my career
in Nebraska as a herd manager for a seedstock operation. To me, I look at the bull sale in March as an
opportunity to interact with experts in the cattle industry and represent CSU at a professional level.
Madalyn Babcock
Marian Erquiaga
Madalyn Babcock - I am a senior in Agricultural Business with
a minor in Media Studies. I was born in Brush, Colorado, where I
was raised on my family’s farm. I joined the CSU Seedstock Team
to broaden my knowledge of the seedstock industry and gain
marketing and advertising experience. After graduating in May,
I plan on continuing my education by pursuing a Masters Degree
in Agricultural Economics. Being on the Seedstock Team is a
special and unique opportunity that has provided me with many
valuable experiences. For me, the most beneficial component
of being a part of the CSU Seedstock Team is being put in real
life situations that require all members to work as a team to put
together every aspect of CSU’s Annual Bull Sale. Additionally,
this team has given me great networking opportunities that will
be valuable to me in my career.
Marian Erquiaga –I am the daughter of Louie and Mary L C
Erquiaga from Fallon, Nevada where my family owns and operates
a commercial cow/calf operation and rotational crop farm. Over
the years of working on the ranch and being in FFA and 4-H, I
have gained a love and appreciation for the agricultural way of
life. My passion for agriculture is why my goal is to return home,
take over the ranch and make it self-sufficient. I feel that for me
to achieve this goal, I need to have the best understanding possible
of the cattle industry thus I joined the Seedstock Team to gain a
better understanding of the seedstock segment of the industry. This
experience has given me a stronger base to help me achieve my
goals later in life.
Miranda Sis – I am a senior Animal Science major with a
minor in Agriculture & Resource Economics. I was raised in
McCook, Nebraska on a backgrounding feedyard and cow/calf
operation. As a youth, I was actively involved in 4-H and spent
my summers helping my dad at the feedyard, showing my horse,
and drawing. During my four years at CSU I have been involved
in many activities; one being Ag Ambassadors, which has helped
me build leadership skills. I have really enjoyed being on the
Seedstock Team which has allowed me to further my skills in
the beef industry. By being on the Team, I hope to network with
industry leaders and further my knowledge of the industry, while
getting a hands-on experience with the business end of seedstock
operations. This experience will help me go out into the business
world or continue my education upon graduation.
Seedstock Merchandising Team
Molly Johnson – I am a senior planning on graduating in May with a double major in Animal Science
and Agriculture Business. I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota raising and showing various animals including
cow/calf, steers, and heifers. This is where I found my passion to pursue the meat animal industry. With
the knowledge and experience I have gained through a wonderful experience at CSU, I would like to serve
and make a positive impact in the beef industry wherever the Lord may lead me. I joined the Seedstock
Merchandising Team because I feel it is important to get hands on experience in all aspects of the beef
industry. Throughout school I have concentrated on meat science and feedlot management, but as a member
of the team I have been able to partake in the production side of the industry. I want to thank all of you for
your support of the team and may God bless you this year!
Patricia Patton – I am a transfer student in the Department of
Animal Science, working on my second bachelor’s degree. Last
year, I completed my Masters degree at CSU in Extension
Education. I was born and raised in Gunnison, Colorado and
I’m the daughter of Pepper and LaRay Patton and Stan and Cara
Faulds. During my early school years I was able to help my
stepdad on the ranches he worked on in the Gunnison Valley.
I have also spent many summers helping my dad and my
grandparents with their small cow/calf operations in Karval and
Limon, Colorado. I am excited to be on this year’s Seedstock
Team to further my knowledge in the beef industry as well as
take the opportunity to meet and network with industry leaders.
Molly Johnson
Tyler Robertson – I am a senior majoring in Animal Science.
I grew up on my family-owned commercial cow/calf and
seedstock operation in Rangely, Colorado with my parents
Scott and Mikki. I am a 5th generation rancher on my family’s
Patricia Patton operation, and have been involved in the cattle industry for as
long as I can remember, and plan on staying involved. I joined
the Seedstock Team to broaden my views about the purebred
industry. Being on the CSU Seedstock Team has allowed me
to expand my knowledge in the cattle industry by giving me the opportunity to visit local seedstock
operations and attend NCBA and CCA conferences. I plan on returning home when I graduate in May
and applying what I’ve learned to my family’s operation.
Dr. Jason Ahola- Assistant Professor of Beef Production Systems and the Seedstock Team Advisor, has
ARDEC At a Glance
Colorado State University’s Agricultural Research Development and Education Center (ARDEC) continues to support
hands-on agricultural education. ARDEC is a diverse agricultural enterprise overseen by the Agricultural Experiment
Station. The facility supports research by providing housing and care for sheep and cattle that are used in a variety
of experiments focused on improving livestock production. The facility also houses a swine barn and a feedlot which
includes GrowSafe feed efficiency technology in six, thirty-five head pens. ARDEC is also the home of a resident
flock of Suffolk sheep and the seedstock herd of registered Angus and Hereford cows. These animals provide hands-on
learning experience to CSU students. They are also the mode of transport for Colorado State University’s production
research efforts to enter into the commercial market. Visitors are always welcome. Call to make an appointment to look
at the cow herd today!
‒ Clayton Shonk, ARDEC Livestock Coordinator
Thanks to the Norgren Family
for Their Support!
Don and Donna Norgren have supported the CSU Seedstock Team for
many years, which has enabled CSU’s premier genetics to be exhibited
and sold on a national level. Their generous contributions also allow the
Seedstock Merchandising Team to attend the National Cattlemen’s Beef
Association’s annual convention. The Norgrens have helped to improve
the ARDEC cowherd, and in doing so, have helped keep the tradition alive.
