The College Head’s Newsletter
In celebration of Valentines
Day, the Concert
Band supported by the
Jazz Band and the Choir
performed on School
House lawn on Sunday
morning. A sizeable
audience braved the
sweltering conditions
to enjoy an entertaining
morning of music and
song. The event, in aid of the Palliative Care unit at Settlers
Hospital will help Hospice provide and upgrade their facilities
for those in need of this highly specialist support. Once again
the Music School, and our school musicians, did not disappoint
and I have no doubt that the audience returned home
with a musical spring in their step.
For those who felt that summer had passed us by, this last
week will have reminded us all that February is always the
most uncomfortable month of the year in Grahamstown. In
2010 we were forced to shut down the school on a number
of days due to the heat. While the thermometer has soared
again this year, temperatures have been tempered by the
cloud cover. This has added to the humidity and for those
who know the east coast of South Africa, conditions feel very
like those in KwaZulu Natal at the moment. Hopefully this will
bring the much needed heavy rain which is always threatening
but slow to deliver. To our Karoo families, we hear tales,
The new
school bags,
designed and
supplied by
the ICDP Trust
through Lebone
House,
are now available.
For every bag purchased we advance
our ability to provide support to, and educate,
another South African child. It is the
intention of the school to phase the “new”
bag in over 2011. Bags can be purchased
through Rev Tim Rist (not Anneliese Maritz
as stated in last week’s newsletter).
last week, of heavy rain and flooding and I hope that there is not too much damage to crops and property.
On Thursday the school hosted Siv Ngesi, a local performer and comedian. Based in Cape Town he brought
his unique blend of commentary and humour to our pupils in a motivational presentation that few will forget.
His message was simple, yet powerful, and he reminded every pupil of their unique talents and strengths.
He encouraged them not to be content with second best and to go out there and make the best of every opportunity.
His life story, coupled with a healthy dose of humour, made for a unique and absorbing motivational
experience for our pupils.
At last week’s staff meeting, we discussed the academic progress of our pupils this term. It was pleasing to
note, in the main, the year has got off to a good start and the vast majority of our pupils have made solid academic
progress. Academic Grade Heads will pick up on concerns and put into place interventions to ensure
that these are prudently dealt with. Similarly, Grade Heads and/or Housepersons will be in touch with parents
should there be any need for this level of feedback. As part of our desire to ensure that academic interventions
are more timeous, there will be regular meetings between staff and Grade Heads. On the whole, it
would appear that there is a sound work ethic amongst the pupils this term and many of our new pupils appear
to have made the transition to the school with relative ease. I would like to remind parents that, should
you have any academic concerns, contact your child’s Grade Head. Please use email as it is not always easy
to contact staff via phone because of their teaching loads.
For your diary this week please note the visit of the England U17 cricket team. They will be playing on Thursday
(17 February) against a Kingswood Select XI which will include one or two recent leavers. The bulk of
the Kingswood team will be made up of current 1st XI players. Also on Thursday, there is the first of this
year’s Sundowner Concerts which takes place in the Music School at 17h45. There is another full weekend
of sporting fixtures ahead with teams playing waterpolo, tennis and basketball. Cricket is against Muir. Next
Sunday’s Chapel service is a Formal Communion Service and I would like to invite parents to join us in the
Chapel at 18h30.
COUNCIL MATTERS
Senior School Elected Representative on Council
Thank you to all those parents who submitted their ballots. The results of the election will be announced next
week after ratification by the College Council Executive Committee this weekend.
Last year, our Concert Band played for Grahamstown
Hospice in a most successful Cheese and Wine
evening which raised R8700. The function was held the
evening before the Summer Dance which meant the
hall was draped and decorated creating a wonderful atmosphere.
We are doing it all again this year on Friday
4 March. Tickets cost R85 per person or R640 per table
of 8 guests. To book your seat contact Alke Bradfield on
a.bradfield@kingswoodcollege.com or 046 – 603 6670.
A number of soloists are playing in this year’s first Sundowner
concert on Thursday 17 February. The concert
will be in the Music School and begins at 17h45. It is
usually approximately 30 minutes long. Please check
with your children to see if they are involved.
Flu Injections
Flu injections are due to be given in March 2011. In past years it has been found that giving
pupils flu injections prevents an epidemic during the Winter Term. If you wish your child to have
the flu injection please email Sr Junkin on e.junkin@kingswoodcollege.com by 25 February at the
latest. The cost of the injection will be debited to your school account.
Congratulations
The team that Kingswood entered for the National Schools Moot Court Competition has been selected to
attend the semi final oral rounds in Pretoria from 18 – 21 March. Well done to Lonah Dyani and Thandwefika
Radebe. Teams are provided with the facts of an imaginary case involving human rights issues. At
the finals, the qualifying teams will argue the case before real judges. The final round will be held in the
Constitutional Court in March 2011. Attorneys will assist the qualifying teams to prepare arguments for the
final rounds. The winners will receive financial support towards their first year to study law at the university
of their choice in South Africa.
Grahamstown Hospice - early notice of two events
ART FOR HOSPICE – 27 JULY
To raise funds for Hospice, members of the Grahamstown community, together with high school art pupils
are requested to donate a piece of original artwork to sell. A panel of judges will select the top 20 or so artworks,
which will be auctioned on the evening. The rest of the items will be sold for R100 each.
For one night only, come and buy your choice of artwork for R100, have a glass of wine on 27 July and give
back to Hospice. Own your masterpiece for the price of R100!
The purpose of the event is twofold:
1. To raise much needed funds for Hospice
2. To expose up-and-coming artists, established artists, amateurs, aspiring and inspiring, contemporary
and classic. This is why all art will be sold at the same price, all art will be displayed randomly
at the event with no classifications of any sort.
You are invited to donate your doodles and masterpieces alike, assist us with sponsorship, or simply attend
a novel, exciting event and leave with a smile on your face.
The exhibition will take place on 27 July at Carinus Art School. It will be open at 17h00 for people to view
the art and to select the pieces they wish to purchase. The auction will start at 19h00. All pieces of art
purchased can be removed at 20h00.
How to take part in 4 easy steps:
1. Draw, paint, carve, turn, make, create, weave, knit, creative crochet or take a photo of anything! (All
artwork must be A5 or bigger.)
VOICES FOR HOSPICE
“Voices for Hospice” is a wave of simultaneous concerts around the globe which take place on World Hospice
and Palliative Care Day every two years. This year’s event will be held in the Guy Butler Auditorium at
the 1820 Settler’s Monument on Saturday 8 October. Each school has the opportunity to sing one or two
numbers and the evening ends with a final mass choir. We look forward to as many schools participating
as possible.

POINT TO PONDER
“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like
wrapping a present and not giving it”
William Arthur Ward
FEEL GOOD MOMENTS
On my travels around the country my view that we
are privileged in the facilities and beauty of our
school is constantly reinforced. The Valentine’s Day
Concert with the backdrop of School House, our
sporting facilities and fields coupled with our beautiful
gardens make Kingswood a very unique and
special place.
