NIGHT AT THE RACES 

It ’ s been two week ’ s since Lakeside Speedway go t started on the 

2011 season. Opening night had to be pushed back a couple of days to 

Sunday afternoon and last Friday night ’ s races were washed out. After 

looking at double digit rainouts a year ago, Marc Olson and his staff at 

Lakeside Speedway would rather see sunny days ahead for the 

remainder of the season. At least on Fridays. 

This week is In The Pits.Net Night at The Races. 

The Modifieds, Grand Nationals, Convertible Sport/B Mods and Factory 

Stocks will all be in action this Friday night. 

The week leading up to Friday night hasn ’ t been the warmest in years, 

but it only rained on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday 

might just have enough heat and sun for Mike Knight and his crew at 

Lakeside to get there jobs done and have the fast 1/2 mile ready to go on 

Friday night. 

After being cooped up all winter long and to have one race under their 

belts, racers, workers and fans are all but ready to get back into going to 

their favorite weekly race track in the Kansas City area, Lakeside 

Speedway. 

Tim Karrick pulled down the Modified feature win, Tim Shields won a 

great shoot-out in the Grand National feature, it was a return to victory 

lane for a former track champion in the Factory Stocks, Brett Heeter and 

Troy Carlyle took home the first ever win for the Convertible Sport/B Mods 

at Lakeside Speedway.

Modified Notes: 

The first week ’ s race saw Tim Karrick battle it out early with Jason 

Bodenhammer and then Chad Lyle . At one point Karrick lost the lead, but 

battled back to take the checkers. 

More than 30 cars took to the track on opening night and the competition 

level showed out on the race track. New competitors, old veterans and 

green rookies filled the opening night roster. The list proved that for the 

2011 season at Lakeside anything and everything can and possibly will 

happen. 

Modified Quick Hits 

• Luke Driskell had a solid run finishing in the runner-up spot to Karrick. 

Getting more comfortable in his GRT chassis and logging more laps 

are paying dividends for this youngster. 

• Jarred Steins out of Maryville, Mo. took a hard roll in the early part of 

the feature. Bubby Harvey got crossed up, bounced off of Cody Agler 

and Steins had nowhere to go but into Harvey flipping him several 

times before coming to a rest. 

• Putting on a ‘ Monster 

Run ’ in the feature 

was Smokin Joe 

Walker. Walker started 

24 on the grid and found 

himself in the 5th 

position as the 

checkered flag dropped. 

After last season, 

Walker has to feel good 

about that run.

Walker has had some successful 

moments at Lakeside Speedway. 

One year he won 4 features in a row. This past week was a stellar effort 

from Walker, he started deep in the field and battled his way to a 5th 

place finish. If he can qualify through his heat, he will start in the front half 

of the field and that means a shorter distance to get to the top spot. Keep 

an eye on Joe Walker this weekend. 

Grand National Notes: 

Opening night had a lot of excitement in the Grand National division. Two 

former champions at Lakeside Speedway dueled it out to the bitter end. 

Only one of the drivers was assured to come out on top. 

Tim Billings seemed to grab the upper hand on the early leader, Tim 

Shields, just passed the midway point of the race. Billings took the lead 

and Shields lost his air cleaner as well as the lead. It didn ’ t look good for 

Shields, what could he do? He could rebound, pass Billings back for the 

lead and go on to win. That is exactly what he did. 

Shields defied the odds and pulled down the opening night win. The race 

could be used as a barometer on how the season will go in this division. 

By all accounts if it is, then this season is bound to be an awesome race 

year in the Grand National class.

Grand National Quick Hits 

• Mike Ryun made his return to the Grand National division at Lakeside 

on opening night. Ryun was the ‘ h ard charger ’ on the night going 

from 12 to 3rd. Ryun is racing the former championship Grand 

National ride of Chad Clancy. 

• 14 competitors checked in for competition on the opening night, more 

than 23 drivers have been pre-registered for the class. This means 

that there will be more drivers joining the class soon. 

• Another driver having a good run was Kelby Ostrander. Ostrander 

started shotgun on the grid and finished in the 7th place position. 

Ostrander had good runs in ‘ 10 and is looking to get Into victory lane 

for the first time in 2011. 

Grand National Driver To Watch This Week: Mike 

Taylor Jr. ( Gladstone, Mo. ) #11T 

Last season was a tough one for Mike Taylor Jr. He missed a majority of 

the season due to injuries. This year he is back and ready to go. Before 

his injuries last year, Taylor 

was consistently running 

toward the front half of the 

field. Now, he is having to 

get things back to where 

they were. Keep an eye on 

Taylor this week, I think that 

this might be his week to 

move up from his 9th place 

finish from opening night.

Factory Stock Notes: 

Brett Heeter took home the Factory Stock Championship in ‘ 09. In 2010, 

Heeter spent most of his time watching the racing action going on the 

track . On opening night in the Factory Stock division, Heeter made up for 

some lost track time by dominating on his way to win #1 in the class.

Factory Stock Quick Hits 

• Several new faces were visible on opening night in the Factory Stock 

class. Tom Fogarty from Olathe had one of the best runs of the night 

finishing in 6th place after starting 16th. 

• Many of the new Factory Stocks had new designs or paint schemes 

for the new season. One of the fan favorites had to be the #3C of Don 

Johnson. Johnson is a teammate to Darrin Christy and is sponsored 

by Christy’ s Tasty Queen. The hood of his car has a huge Christy ’s 

Tasty Queen Pork Tenderloin sandwich! 

• 6 of the drivers that finished in the top 10 in the feature started 13th or 

worst. Dave Holcomb had the best results on the night starting in 17th 

and finishing in 3rd. 

Factory Stock Driver To Watch This Week: Caleb 

Mcclellan ( Kansas City, Mo. ) #68m 

Last season Mcclellan broke 

through the win column multiple 

times. This season didn ’ t start off 

the way this youngster thought it 

would. He finished outside the top 

10, but don’ t think he is going to 

hang out in this area. Look for the 

#68m to be back near the front 

this week at Lakeside Speedway in the Factory Stock main.

Lakeside ReWind 

Convertible Sport/B Mod Notes: 

This was the class that had a lot of buzz heading into the season. Troy 

Carlyle grabbed the opening night win and he did it going away from the 

field. Most of the drivers in this class are still getting acclimated to racing 

at Lakeside Speedway. The topless class seemed to be a hit with the fans 

as the driver is more accessible to the fans in the stands. Look for new 

competitors this week at Lakeside Speedway.

Convertible Sport/B Mod Quick Hits 

• Gene Claxton, former multiple time Grand National Champion, has 

jumped into this new class at Lakeside Speedway. Claxton, the 

consummate racer, finished in the 5th position in the main event. 

• AJ Tice was the only female racer to compete on opening day at 

Lakeside. This veteran B Mod racer is looking to jump into the top 10 

this week. 

• Troy Carlyle ( winner) and Mike Tanner ( 2 nd ) put on a move in 

the feature. Both drivers started 8th and 8th respectively in the main 

event. 

Convertible Sport/B Mod Driver To Watch This Week: 

Mike Higley ( T ecumseh ) #11 

Higley has had some good runs at 

different tracks so far in 2011. On 

opening night by his own admission, 

Higley said that he was off. Don’ t look 

for that to be the case this week. Higley 

and his owner, Mike Ladish, have been 

diving into this B Mod of theirs and is 

looking to put it up front. Watch Higley 

this week.
