People aged 16-74 who stated they were an employee or self-employed were also asked to<br />
provide further details on the Census form with a job description question asking for the full<br />
title of their main job and the description of what is done in that job. These were then coded<br />
to the 2000 edition of the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) to give the person an<br />

• There are significantly less people in employment in higher-grade occupations, and<br />
significantly more in lower-grade, elementary occupations in <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Lever</strong> than both<br />
Bolton and England & Wales.<br />
• Almost half of the employed population in <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Lever</strong> worked in the bottom three<br />
occupational tiers, compared to just one third in Bolton. Further to this, only one quarter<br />
of the employed population worked in the top three occupational tiers, compared to 35%<br />
in Bolton, and 40% nationally.<br />
