Strategic <strong>environmental</strong> <strong>assessment</strong><br />

– or <strong>environmental</strong>/susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />

appraisal – is the process of<br />

assess<strong>in</strong>g the impacts of policies,<br />

plans and programmes on the<br />

environment (or on susta<strong>in</strong>ability).<br />

Oxford Brookes University is offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a <strong>distance</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>certificate</strong> course<br />

based on a course textbook, Webbased<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation which <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

self-<strong>assessment</strong> exercises and<br />

videos of SEA experts, and a CD<br />

which conta<strong>in</strong>s a series of lectures<br />

with associated learn<strong>in</strong>g materials.<br />

This course <strong>in</strong>volves about 15 days’<br />

work, and can be done at any time<br />

<strong>in</strong> the 15-week period of the course.<br />

It could count for CPD (Cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Professional Development) credits<br />

and 20 CATS at M Level credits, for<br />

those who want an academic<br />

qualification.<br />

The course <strong>in</strong>cludes structured<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g sessions, examples, and<br />

access to a range of SEA reports<br />

and case studies. It covers:<br />

The course has run s<strong>in</strong>ce 2001, but<br />

the Web-based package was<br />

extensively updated <strong>in</strong> 2009, a<br />

second edition of the book <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

major revisions was published <strong>in</strong><br />

2010, and the lectures on the CD<br />

are from 2011.<br />

Three pieces of coursework must<br />

be prepared to an acceptable<br />

standard for the <strong>certificate</strong>. These<br />

can be chosen from a range of<br />

options. The course tutor can help<br />

you choose the best package for<br />

Course tutor<br />

The course tutor is Dr Riki Therivel.<br />

Dr Therivel is a partner of the<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability consultancy Levett-<br />

Therivel, a visit<strong>in</strong>g professor at<br />

Oxford Brookes University’s<br />

Department of Plann<strong>in</strong>g, and a<br />

commissioner with the Infrastructure<br />

Plann<strong>in</strong>g Commission. She has<br />

written three books and many<br />

articles on SEA, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ‘SEA <strong>in</strong><br />

Action, 2nd edition’ which is the<br />

basis for this course. She has run<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses <strong>in</strong> many countries,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Iran, Austria, Ghana and<br />

New Zealand. She has advised many<br />

local, regional and national authorities<br />

on their SEA process. She is the<br />

2003 recipient of the International<br />

Association for Impact Assessment’s<br />

award for <strong>in</strong>dividual contribution to<br />

Impact Assessment on grounds of<br />

her research and teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Why you should choose Oxford Brookes University<br />

The Department of Plann<strong>in</strong>g at Oxford Brookes University is the largest<br />

centre of plann<strong>in</strong>g education and research <strong>in</strong> the UK. It has been a leader <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational profile <strong>in</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g edge studies of <strong>environmental</strong> <strong>assessment</strong><br />

and its application, such as recent work on climate change and resilience.<br />

UK research <strong>assessment</strong> exercises have highlighted our work as be<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

‘<strong>in</strong>ternational stand<strong>in</strong>g’. Our clients, funders and partners <strong>in</strong>clude the<br />

UNECE, EU, UK government and agencies, local government and the<br />

commercial sector. Our expertise lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>strategic</strong> <strong>assessment</strong> and<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability appraisal; socio-economic impacts; climate change mitigation<br />
