LOYOLA INSTITUTE OF FRONTIER ENERGY (LIFE)
Annual Report (2010-2011)
INTRODUCTION:
Loyola Institute of Frontier Energy (LIFE) is making progress in multi-disciplinary research with
the focus on energy, environment, and bioethics. The Jesuit dynamic spirit of ‘ever to excel’
(magis) propels the research team of LIFE to promote people-oriented research for the betterment
of humankind. And, in keeping with the spirit of GC 35 LIFE has been all along striving to
promote eco-friendly and environmental-conscious research projects. Our research activities keep
this in focus as well.
Research: In this academic year one PhD was awarded and four PhD thesis were submitted to the
University of Madras. Currently 21 doctoral scholars and 3 M.Phil scholars are making progress
with various research projects.
Conferences: In order to bring together the scientists and to disseminate the information for the
public, LIFE every year organizes a conference. This year LIFE has organized National
conference on “Conservation of biodiversity for Holistic Development” on 3 rd and 4 th December,
2010 (Convener: Dr M. Selvanayagam and Organizing Secretary: Dr K. Thresia Mathews). 15
invited talks and 19 contributed papers were presented and in the poster session 10 presentations
were made. Over 250 participants took part in the conference. The Former Vice-Chancellor of
Bharathidasan University, and presently the Chairman, state level Expert Appraisal committee,
MoEF, Government of India Dr M. Mariappan inaugurated the conference. His talk focused on:
Every decision we take that affects biodiversity, also affects our lives and the lives of other
people. Biodiversity is crucial to human wellbeing, sustainable development and poverty
reduction. Rev Fr A. Victor SJ, Mission Superior, Jesuit Chennai Mission presided over the
function.
During the conference State Level competitions were organized both for school and college
students on various themes related to Biodiversity, namely Different Ecosystem, Wildlife
Management, Afforestation, Bioresources, and Medicinal Plants. Essay writing both in English
and Tamil, poster presentation, painting and sketching were conducted. We have also organized
similar competitions for the DNA club students of Tamilnadu and more than 50 students
participated from DNA Club Schools of Tamilnadu. The winners were given cash prizes.
On 4 th December, 2010 LIFE and LICET jointly signed MoU with UNESCO (Bangkok) on
Bioethics Education. UNESCO was represented by Dr Darryl Macer, Regional Adviser on Social
and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific. On behalf of LIFE and LICET Dr Selvanayagam
and Fr Francis P Xavier respectively signed the MoU. The valedictory function held on 4 th at
3.30 PM and it was presided over by Dr Darryl Macer and valedictory address was given by
Mr. Jean-Baptiste Suchet, consultant faculty, LICET, Loyola Campus. Rev Dr John Pragasam SJ,
Dean of Studies, LICET distributed the prizes for the winners of different completion.
National conference on “Green Energy for Sustainable Development” was organized on 7 th and
8 th of January 2011 in collaboration with Loyola-ICAM College of Engineering and Technology
(LICET), Loyola Campus (Convener: Rev Dr Francis P Xavier SJ and Organizing Secretary:
Dr Merline Shyla). The inagurtal function was presided over by Dr R. Christodas Gandhi IAS,
Chairman and Managing Director, Tamilnadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) and the
inaugural address was given by Dr P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancelor of Anna University,
Chennai. Mr Isaac Mohanlal, Advocate, High court of Madras delivered the keynote address.
During the conference 6 invited lectures 11 contributory papers were presented on Green
energy. We have also organized competion for the school and college students of Tamilnadu on
the topics related to Green Energy .The valedictory function was held at 3.30 PM on 8 th January
2011 and Mrs. Sowmiya Anbumani, President, Green Motherland (Pasumai Thaayagam) gave the
valedictory address and distributed the prizes..
LIFE, in collaboration with LICET, will be organizing a National seminar on ‘E-Waste
Management’ on Mar 18 th 2011. LIFE is able to conduct collaborative research with many other
institutions as well.
Endowment Lecture: The Dr K. Swaminathan Endowment lecture was delivered by
Dr Uwe Linnert, Global Technology Field Leader, Corporate Research and Technologies Siemens
2
AG, Germany on “Sensor Systems and Applications” on 19.01.2011. LIFE research team
sincerely thanks Dr and Mrs Edwin Suresh Raj – Both of them passed through LIFE and now in
the UK, for instituting the endowment.
Future Plan:
LIFE plans on making the research facility as an independent research institute that can offer MSc
and MPhil and PhD programme on biodiversity, bio-resources, energy and environment. Efforts
are taken to optimize the research instrumentation and other infra-structure towards this goal for
the future and to further extend collaborative research with other national and international
research facilities with the focus on energy, environment, and bioethics.
Conclusion:
The LIFE research team wholeheartedly thanks the Jesuit Management for effectively
accompanying us in our progress towards people-oriented research. In particular the LIFE
research team is grateful to the Management for the increase in the annual grant. The strength of
LIFE is the team-work and LIFE is dedicated towards creating an eco-friendly environment. We
look forward, in Ignatian sprit of magis, ever to excel.
