CAIAC is a Study and Research Centre (CER) within UAB, created in 2010. CAIAC is formed mainly
by two complementary groups: CEPHIS from TIC Engineering and TransMedia Catalonia from
Audiovisual Translation. In the TIC domain, the Laboratory for Hardware-Software Prototypes &
Solutions (CEPHIS) works on the research and development of new hardware and software codesign
methodologies to increment the productivity of the custom-designed electronic systems. The
range of these systems goes from printed electronics up to wireless ultra low-power components and
multi-core embedded systems. Target applications are ambient intelligence, M2M & ARM
technologies, BAN & AAL, multimedia and mobile processing (3D, audio, video, images, augmented
reality, interactivity. etc.).
The research lab is formed by professors, doctors, engineers and technicians who are nationally and
internationaly well known by their knowledge and research contribution in the fields of specification,
design and development of hardware system prototypes and their integration in any kind of
microelectronic solution.
The system prototypes and solutions are developed by using most modern techniques, like the use of
hight level design languages (VHDL, SystemC, C++, C, Java, UML, XML) and new Codesign methods
and tools. This allows to achive a great deal of flexibility and integration capacity using new devices
(components and subsystems) facing application and production environments.

CICAT
The Catalan Lighting Cluster brings together companies and other organizations with a role in the
value chain in the sector, covering activities such as manufacturing, designing or prescribing lighting
systems and their components or providing specific technical services for the lighting industry. It
contributes to improving competitiveness in the lighting sector in Catalonia both now and in the future
in order to deal successfully with the fundamental changes affecting its business environment.

The results of this research are the basis of joint projects with companies for innovation and
experimental development of smart products - Smart Innovation - that bring new uses and experiences
to a wide range of economic sectors.
Furthermore, one of the main functions of the technology centre is to establish collaborations with other
research centres and universities to develop joint projects.
Cetemmsa is accredited as a Centre for Technology Innovation by the Ministry of Science and
Innovation and a member of the network TECNIO of Catalonian government.
