“This 5-day short course is designed to provide an understand<strong>in</strong>g of the horticultural<br />

processes of tree growth and development. New <strong>in</strong> this year’s course is the focus on<br />

water use efficiency and soil health. Decid<strong>in</strong>g precisely when to pick fruit and the post<br />

harvest handl<strong>in</strong>g thereof is crucial and we have therefore <strong>in</strong>cluded a session presented<br />

by Mariana Jooste. Knowledge of production fundamentals comb<strong>in</strong>ed with practical<br />

guidance dur<strong>in</strong>g the field day will skill producers and practitioners <strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g high<br />

yield<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able orchards”.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the first 2 days (10 & 11 August), growth and development and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g systems will be<br />

discussed. New to this course, is the session on root function aspects with emphasis on water<br />

use efficiency and soil health, scheduled for Monday, 23 August. The second half of the day<br />

is dedicated to fruit ripen<strong>in</strong>g, pick<strong>in</strong>g and handl<strong>in</strong>g presented by Mariana Jooste. Tuesday will<br />

focus on growth and development followed by the fieldday on Wednesday the 25 th . The<br />

course is concluded with a certificate presentation and clos<strong>in</strong>g lunch. (Program attached)<br />

The short course is aimed at production managers with some experience <strong>in</strong> fruit production.<br />

Presentations will be supported by horticultural notes compiled by Dr Cook & Ms Jooste as<br />

well as a handbook valued at more than R1600 per book :<br />

Registration fees are R 6000 excl VAT and <strong>in</strong>clude a set of short course notes, the<br />
