Facts About “Green” Floor
Finish
• In 1986 the city of Seattle required the
Boeing Corporation to reduce the amount
of zinc they discharged into the waste
water treatment system
• It was determined the excessive amount
of zinc was attributed to the floor finish
stripped from the substrate during the
strip / refinish process

Facts About “Green” Floor
Finish
• The Butcher Polish Company, Marlboro,
Massachusetts developed the first “Zinc
Free” floor finish
• Since the inception of the “Zinc Free”
product, many other manufacturers have
added one to their line
• With no zinc present these finishes are
considered to be “GREEN”

Facts About “Green” Floor
Finish
• The “Zinc Free” floor finishes work well in
low traffic areas but suffer in high traffic
areas
• Without the zinc to hold the finish
together the “Zinc Free” products are
prone to wear much quicker than their
counterparts with conventional zinc
technology

Facts About “Green” Floor
Finish
• Anyone purchasing the “Zinc Free”
products must plan for more
maintenance
• Manufacturers offering the “Zinc Free”
floor finishes also make companion
products for the maintenance steps
needed
