<strong>Space</strong> <strong>Nurtures</strong><br />

a programme designed to develop the future generation of designers<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

Encouraging design appreciation and cultivating the next generation of designers have always<br />

been the mantra of <strong>Space</strong> Furniture. The strategic relocation into the heart of the arts and civic<br />

district surrounded by design institutions is also testament of <strong>Space</strong>’s interest to be involved in<br />

meaningful student-centric activities.<br />

Announced in November 2011 in conjunction with the official launch of the <strong>Space</strong> Asia Hub,<br />

<strong>Space</strong>, supported by the <strong>DesignSingapore</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, will inaugurate a student attachment<br />

programme with Vitra in 2012. The objective is to select students with potential and expose<br />

them to the multi-faceted world of design on an international level that is beyond the textbook.<br />

PROGRAMME<br />

The programme for 2012 will comprise a week long series of workshops at Boisbuchet and a<br />

week long attachment with renowned Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra.<br />

(Detailed programme will be announced at a later date.)<br />

PROCESS OF STUDENT SELECTION<br />

A design competition is being put in place in order to identify the best two talents this year in<br />

representing Singapore on an international arena.<br />

DESIGN TASK<br />

With reference to the brand Vitra, the recognisable Panton chair designed by Verner Panton will<br />

be used as a palate for students to apply their design sensibilities onto a mid twentieth century<br />

classic with graphic and/or craft enhancement, or any form of embellishment.<br />

COMPETITION RULES<br />

- Students studying any discipline of design with tertiary institutions are eligible.<br />

- Only Singaporeans or PR can apply.<br />

- Students should work individually and cannot submit more than one entry.<br />

- Entries submitted after these deadlines will be disqualified:<br />

2 April : Preliminary ideas for shortlisting<br />

30 April : Finalists submission of prototypes<br />

30 April – 11 May : Attendance at Final Interview<br />

- Two winners will be selected<br />

- Winners are required to be involved in campaign activities organized by <strong>Space</strong><br />

Furniture<br />

- Participants should provide proof (eg. Student card) that they are studying in their<br />

reported accredited institution or they will be disqualified<br />

- All judges decisions are final<br />

- The organiser reserves the right to make any changes to the selection process without<br />

prior notice


SUBMISSION FORMAT<br />

Preliminary Ideas:-<br />

- Entries must be submitted in PDF format emailed to rosemary@ultrex.com.sg<br />

- PDF format must be no larger than 5mb<br />

- A copy of the official entry form completely filled up must be attached<br />

Finalist Prototypes:-<br />

- Shortlisted entries will be announced on 9 April<br />

- Finalists will be given a chair for prototyping, available for collection from 9 – 13 April.<br />

Collection is by appointment only<br />

- Finalist must produce a prototype using the chair<br />

- Submission of prototypes must be made by appointment to <strong>Space</strong> Furniture<br />

- All appointments are to be made with competition co-ordinator, Rosemary Phan.<br />

Finalist Interview:-<br />

- Finalist must be in attendance for an interview to present their idea on the assigned<br />

date and time provided at a later date<br />

PRELIMINARY ROUND<br />

- Entries must be submitted in PDF format* illustrating design concept clearly, with a<br />

copy of the official entry form completely filled up<br />

FINAL SELECTION<br />

- 12 entries will be shortlisted for the purpose of prototyping<br />

- A maximum budget of S$150 will be given (receipts need to be submitted for<br />

reimbursement). Any additional amount spent will be at student’s own expense<br />

- 12 finalists with completed prototypes and personal design portfolio will be required to<br />

present and be interviewed by :<br />

o One design personality representing <strong>Space</strong> Furniture Singapore<br />

o One design personality representing Vitra<br />

o One design personality representing the <strong>DesignSingapore</strong> <strong>Council</strong><br />

JUDGING CRITERIA<br />

Entries will be judged by:-<br />

o One design personality representing <strong>Space</strong> Furniture Singapore<br />

o One design personality representing Vitra<br />

o One design personality representing the <strong>DesignSingapore</strong> <strong>Council</strong><br />

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS<br />

The intellectual property (IP) rights of all creatives submitted for this student design<br />

competition belong to <strong>Space</strong> Furniture Pte Ltd (the “organiser”). All participants understand<br />

and agree that the participant shall not acquire any rights in any trademark, patent, copyright,<br />

any other intellectual property rights and anything that may be used in this student design<br />

competition and that all proprietary rights therein are, and shall remain vested in the<br />

“organiser”. However, all participants may use the entries submitted or won from this<br />

competition as part of the portfolio for hire and for the branding purpose of the institution.<br />

TERMS & CONDITIONS<br />

- Students must be studying in a local government-funded tertiary institution or an<br />

accredited institution.<br />

- Only Singaporeans & PR can participate.<br />
