Space Nurtures
a programme designed to develop the future generation of designers
INTRODUCTION
Encouraging design appreciation and cultivating the next generation of designers have always
been the mantra of Space Furniture. The strategic relocation into the heart of the arts and civic
district surrounded by design institutions is also testament of Space’s interest to be involved in
meaningful student-centric activities.
Announced in November 2011 in conjunction with the official launch of the Space Asia Hub,
Space, supported by the DesignSingapore Council, will inaugurate a student attachment
programme with Vitra in 2012. The objective is to select students with potential and expose
them to the multi-faceted world of design on an international level that is beyond the textbook.
PROGRAMME
The programme for 2012 will comprise a week long series of workshops at Boisbuchet and a
week long attachment with renowned Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra.

PROCESS OF STUDENT SELECTION
A design competition is being put in place in order to identify the best two talents this year in
representing Singapore on an international arena.
DESIGN TASK
With reference to the brand Vitra, the recognisable Panton chair designed by Verner Panton will
be used as a palate for students to apply their design sensibilities onto a mid twentieth century
classic with graphic and/or craft enhancement, or any form of embellishment.
COMPETITION RULES
- Students studying any discipline of design with tertiary institutions are eligible.
- Only Singaporeans or PR can apply.
- Students should work individually and cannot submit more than one entry.
- Entries submitted after these deadlines will be disqualified:
2 April : Preliminary ideas for shortlisting
30 April : Finalists submission of prototypes
30 April – 11 May : Attendance at Final Interview
- Two winners will be selected
- Winners are required to be involved in campaign activities organized by Space
Furniture
- Participants should provide proof (eg. Student card) that they are studying in their
reported accredited institution or they will be disqualified
- All judges decisions are final
- The organiser reserves the right to make any changes to the selection process without
prior notice

SUBMISSION FORMAT
Preliminary Ideas:-
- Entries must be submitted in PDF format emailed to rosemary@ultrex.com.sg
- PDF format must be no larger than 5mb
- A copy of the official entry form completely filled up must be attached
Finalist Prototypes:-
- Shortlisted entries will be announced on 9 April
- Finalists will be given a chair for prototyping, available for collection from 9 – 13 April.
Collection is by appointment only
- Finalist must produce a prototype using the chair
- Submission of prototypes must be made by appointment to Space Furniture
- All appointments are to be made with competition co-ordinator, Rosemary Phan.

Finalist Interview:-
- Finalist must be in attendance for an interview to present their idea on the assigned
date and time provided at a later date
PRELIMINARY ROUND
- Entries must be submitted in PDF format* illustrating design concept clearly, with a
copy of the official entry form completely filled up
FINAL SELECTION
- 12 entries will be shortlisted for the purpose of prototyping
- A maximum budget of S$150 will be given (receipts need to be submitted for
reimbursement). Any additional amount spent will be at student’s own expense
- 12 finalists with completed prototypes and personal design portfolio will be required to
present and be interviewed by :
o One design personality representing Space Furniture Singapore
o One design personality representing Vitra
o One design personality representing the DesignSingapore Council
JUDGING CRITERIA
Entries will be judged by:-

o One design personality representing the DesignSingapore Council

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
The intellectual property (IP) rights of all creatives submitted for this student design
competition belong to Space Furniture Pte Ltd (the “organiser”). All participants understand
and agree that the participant shall not acquire any rights in any trademark, patent, copyright,
any other intellectual property rights and anything that may be used in this student design
competition and that all proprietary rights therein are, and shall remain vested in the
“organiser”. However, all participants may use the entries submitted or won from this
competition as part of the portfolio for hire and for the branding purpose of the institution.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
- Students must be studying in a local government-funded tertiary institution or an
accredited institution.
- Only Singaporeans & PR can participate.
