Jacob is the earliest Winesburg that we know who lived in the USA. The earliest Winesburg whom we have a
record is listed at the Historical Research Center, Ind., PO Box 477, Phoenix, AZ 97535.
Von Winesburg born 1369 in Lothrington, Germany. He is the "first Notable bearer" of the name Winesburg. The
Winesburgs were vineyard owners in Germany. They had a ship built, hired a crew, and came to the USA. (this
info found by Mark Winesburg)
Jacob Winesburg served in the 76th Inf. 1778 Aug 10 Court Trespass case--discontinued. 1781 April 10 case
dismissed no appearance 179_ to 179_ 76th VA Inf. out of Loudoun Co., Va in Company of Capt._____in Class
#10 (so sp. Means Class) Residence was 1788 Loudoun Co., VA. Jacob lived with sons, George and John also
paying taxes. 1789 Jacob paid his own taxes on Pen. Prop. Taxes.(Does Pen. mean state of PA?) 1789 Loudoun
Co., VA Will Book D, pg 61, owed 0.12.1 pds to estate of Martin Steefles (so spelled) from open account at his
mercantile store. Jacob and his unknown wife had six (6) children.

Mark Winesburg has found that John Winesburg, Sr. served in the military from 1870 to 1873 in Loudoun Co., VA.
He served with the 56th Reg. under Capt. Geo. Hartman in Claff #4 (class)
In 1804 he is with the 57th Reg.
In 1851 John, Sr. lived at 7th St. BI Clay, R. W. and retired (info from Wheeling City Directory)
His son, John, Jr., lived at 40 Clay St. at the corner of 7th St.
John is listed as a coal miner. He and Elizabeth had eight (8) children.
Mark put census records on the family sheet of Jacob. Since Jacob and Geo of PA had both died before 1850 I
am assuming that the census pertained to either or both John or Charles. I will put the info on both brothers.
Ohio Co., VA (WV) 1840 census shows them both in the 4th ward, Wheeling, Ohio Co., VA (WV) 1850 and
1860sus remain the same as 1840.

Co., IL. He married UNKNOWN November 11, 1791. She was born in PA, and died 1811.
Notes for GEORGE OF PA WINESBURG:
Mark Winesburg listed Census records on the family sheet for Jacob. Since Jacob and George (of PA) were
both dead I assume that the records are showing John and/or Charles. In the 1820 Census they are in Allegheny,
Cumberland Co., MD. 1830 they are in Ohio Co., VA (WV) 1840 they are in the 4th Ward, Wheeling, VA (WV)
1850 and 1860 same as 1840.
George had eight (8) children. Because of the frequent use of names, Eleanor and/or Mark Winesburg has called
this George the "George of PA"
Note: Frederick Co., Maryland Marriages 1738--1850 shows a marriage of George Winesburg to an Ann
McDonald on Oct 24 1793. Minister was Christian Streit. This is probably NOT George of PA but this George is
the only one I (Eleanor) have that the date would fit so I am storing this info with him until I find who it belongs to.

Washington Co., PA, Ohio Co of VA (now WV) Union Twp., Butler Co., PA and Helt twp., Vermillion Co., IN.
He was 86 yrs old when he died.

Occupation of "Eli of Michigan" was farmer. I have no idea why he is known as "Eli of Michigan". He seemed to
have lived in Indiana. Maybe his descendants went to Michigan. Mark Winesburg's note is: "Eli lived with his
son, George, after his separation from Martha Ann Butler Winesburg in 1870.
Eleanor told me, in a phone conversation, that most of the Winesburg descendants in Michigan were Afro-American
which she thought might be slave descendants of the first Winesburgs. Nothing has been found to say that the
Winesburg's owned slaves but they were supposedly wealthy vineyard owners so it is possible. This Eli was white
since he was a son of George of Pa.

markers could not be read. I didn't find anything in the newer section either.

Directory. This means that he built and/or repaired barrels.
This is my line. Eleanor Winesburg Landfair of Phoenix, AZ helped me tie my Samuel (father of Grandma, Belle
LaMar) to Levi Lewis. I couldn't find anything to tie our Samuel to any family since they used the same names
over and over and OVER! Eleanor sent me family sheets (mostly prepared by Mark Winesbug of Oswasso, OK)
These proved invaluable. Mark had my history right down to Grandma. THANK YOU ELEANOR AND

Notes for SAMUEL WINESBURG:
Eleanor Landfair and Mark Winesburg are responsible for finding the family of Samuel for me. Since the
Winesburg families used the same name so many times it was hard for me to tell who Samuel's father was. He
was not listed in any of the census records that I found. Sarah Margaret Meisenhelder Winesburg and her
daughter, Belle, lived with Sarah Margaret's unmarried sisters in the census of 1880. By 1900 Sarah Maragaret,
her son, Earl, and daughter Iona (Iola) were living with Belle (who had married James Francis Long) and Belle's
children. I never knew Samuel's occupation or why he never seemed to be with the family. Later I discovered
that he died young (39 yrs). Cause of death was Murder--I searched records and found that the Wheeling
Intelligencer devoted the front page to the story. He was working at Wheeling Steel at the time. He had worked
on Sunday and, upon returning home, had trouble with a neighbor. A Mr. Michael Moyland and his son, John,
had an on going fuss with the Winesburgs. The son went to the house and got a gun. Both Samuel and Sarah
Maragaret were shot. The Doctor was summoned and he and the police came through a tunnel that run from
Wheeling Steel to Boggs Run where the Winesburgs had been shot. Samuel was dead but the Dr. operated and
removed the bullet from Sarah Margaret. The newspaper reported that the people felt that the son, John, had
pulled the trigger and indeed, when I found the transcript of the trials, Michael (the Father) was fined, time and
money, but John (the son) was given ten years at hard labor in the WV Pen. The newspaper wrote that they did
not believe that Sarah Margaret would survive but she did. She did not die until 1925. Austin (youngest son of
James Francis and Belle) believed that his parents started dating on this night. James Francis and Belle were at
the Mt. Olivet Methodist Church when the news came that Belle's parents had been shot. James Francis went
home with Belle, so the story goes, and while the Dr. operated on Sarah Margaret, her daugher, Belle, held the
light for the Dr. and James Francis held Belle's hand.

Winesburg Long Dec. 10, 1925 and that interment was made at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Rt. 88 Sherrard, Marshall
Co., WV. No marker was there in 2004.
Sarah Margaret was a published poet/author/songwriter. Copy of "Local and National Poets of America" includes

a picture, biograhy and poetry of "Maggie" Winesburg. Written as follows:
" Mrs. N. M. Winesburg (misprint) born near Wheeling, W. Va., April 15 1885. "The poems of this lady have
appeared in the New York Graphic, The Illustrated Companion and other publications. Many of her songs have
been set to music, and quite a few short stories and sketches from her pen have received publication. She was
married in 1875 to Samuel Winesburg, and has one child living. She is now engaged on two serial stories"
