Ron Phillips- Turning Corners
Turning bowls and platters with corners and
straight sides like squares, rectangles,
pentagons, etc. is much like turning natural
edged bowls where the delicate edge work is
little more than a shadow. Your bowl gouge
spends more time cutting air than wood while
you develop the pointed "wings". I hope to
discuss and demonstrate some of the
techniques that have worked for me and may
help you in your future attempts at "turning
corners".
President’s Corner
sessions with professional turner-demonstrators at
the discretion of the NMWT Board of Directors.
In the past 3 months, the NMWT has
purchased 5 new Delta midi lathes for chapter
workshops, sold 4 Jet mini lathes, sold one
Delta lathe and facilitated the sale of a Jet mini
lathe package from the Albuquerque 2009
National Symposium. All these efforts have
consumed a lot of time for some of our board.
There are still some people that offered bids
who were not selected so if you want to trade
up there might be a buyer for your used lathe.
A trade over coffee has happened before!!
We are scheduled to show turnings at the
Sunport in November of this year. We
displayed there about 3 years ago and the
Sunport staff have told us it was one of their
most popular showings. ALL of us MUST put
this event in our planning because it is a great
venue for our chapter AND sales have
happened from that exposure. Beginners to
experts can all show work. No one should feel
they are not advanced enough. We regularly
have a great gallery at our meeting so there is
NO excuse.
The next regional symposium is at Provo, Utah
May 16-18. Several of our members have
gone in past so ask for information. Go to
www.woodturnerscatalog.com for specifics.
This is one of the premier regional woodturning
symposium events.
I am a strong advocate of woodturning events,
so if you have questions – just grab me.
Keep the chips flying!
February 02 Program Summary
The review of the February meeting will be
delayed until the next issue.
Silent Auction
Silent Auction will be held during each NMWT
workshop to raise money for a scholarship
fund. The earnings from this fund will be used
to reduce member’s cost of attending hands-on
You may place any item that you think will sell in
the auction. Bring only items relating to woodworking
or woodturning. There will be auction
sheets on a table outside the WWS meeting room.
Take a sheet, write the name of the item on the
sheet and put your item with the sheet. If you want
the item to go for a certain amount, put your name
and the minimum bid on the sheet. The Auction will
be over at the end of the break. Money will be
collected for items sold during the last part of the
meeting. All money collected will go into the
scholarship fund. Items not sold will be returned to
the owner and the owner will remove the items from
NMWT OFFERS CUSTOM TURNING
SMOCKS
After much looking I have finally found a domestic
source for a quality turning smock. A picture
accompanies this article. The smock design and
material are identical to that offered by AAW. The
smocks come in five colors: Royal Blue, Navy Blue,
Burgundy, Tan and Grey and in seven sizes: S, M,
L, XL, XXL, XXXL, XXXXL. The smocks are sized
to fit over a shirt so if you wear an L shirt you
should order an L smock. AAW sells their smocks
online for $50 plus about $9 shipping and handling
plus $3 extra for your name (added here). NMWT
will charge $50 per smock with NMWT logo plus $3
for your name if desired. The price includes sales
tax. The XXXXL size is $3 extra and there is no
price break for volume. A company in Colorado is
manufacturing the smocks.
Normally, if you order and pay for an item at one
meeting I can have it at the next; however, if you
say please and buy me a cup of coffee, I can
probably have it in two weeks.
