ROTARY DISTRICT PEACE COMMUNITIES PROGRAM (RDPCP) Peace Projects Any organized activity that is successful in benefiting individuals or groups in the community or reducing conflict can be viewed as a “Peace project”. Peace projects may be initiatives of Rotary clubs or involve partnerships between Rotary Clubs and local civic authorities or other organizations (e.g. Departments of Education, Health, Police). The purpose is to make a difference in practical ways at the grass roots in local communities and to contribute to conflict resolution. (e.g. creating a garden for dementia patients, supporting Aboriginal conciliation activities, conducting a program for disadvantaged teens). In 1992, the District Peace Communities Committee asked Rotary Clubs to identify “Peace projects” that benefit the local community, to bring them to the attention of the civic authority and to partner with the local authority to register their community as a Rotary Peace Community. Peace Communities Using this model, Peace Communities have been established in New Zealand, Japan, Philippines, Canada, South Africa, USA, Namibia, Zambia, France, Israel, India, Mauritius, Northern Marianas, Argentina, Serbia and of course Australia. Many of these Rotary Peace communities have proclaimed their commitment to Peace and conflict resolution by erecting Peace monuments and Peace symbols at locations where Rotarians and local citizens can meet on special days such as Rotary’s World Understanding Day, and Rotary’s birthday on 23rd February. On these days, Peace projects initiated and performed by local citizens and organizations are publicized and the persons and groups involved are recognized for the practical contribution they have made to community Peace. The second Rotary Peace Communities International Conference to be held 21-23 September 2012 in Wagga Wagga brings together Rotary Peace Communities around the world to renew their commitment to the practice of Peace and conflict resolution. ROTARY ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION PLAN (REAP) The aim of the plan is to encourage clubs to support at least one environmental project. The district committee will act as a resource to assist with specif ic programs, and provide suggestions for projects and methods of implementation.
