1.0 INTRODUCTION:

aize is widely cultivated throughout the world. It is an important
cereal crop in India. United States of America, China, Brazil
France, Indonesia, India and South Africa are the major maize growing
countries in the world. The importance of maize is due to it’s wide
diversity of uses. It is used both as food for human and feed for
animals. In the United States and Canada, the primary use for maize is
as a feed for livestock. Green cobs are roasted and eaten by people
with great interest. Corn is converted in to a variety of foods such as
popcorn, sweet corn, flour and staple alkali-cooked foods. The starch,
the major constituent of the corn kernel is used in foods and many
industrial products, including transformation into plastics and fabrics..
The starch is also converted into glucose or fructose for use as food sweetness. It is also
fermented and distilled to produce grain alcohol. Increasingly, ethanol is being used as an
additive in gasoline for motor fuels to lower pollutants, and reduce petroleum use, which is
nowadays also known as biofuels.
