V. HEALTH HAZARD DATA
CHRONIC EFFECTS:
MUTAGENICITY: In vitro, formaldehyde is mutagenic (mutagenic activity in E. coli, Pseudomonas fluoresces, and
Saccharomyces cervisiae). In vivo, no information.
CARCINOGENICITY: Formaldehyde is carcinogenic to animals (nasal cancer, lifetime inhalation study, and rats). Listed as
an experimental animal carcinogen (IARC, NTP) and probable human carcinogen (IARC).
REPRODUCTION: Formaldehyde showed no evidence of reproductive effects in animal studies (mice, rats, dogs).
OTHER: Formaldehyde - no evidence of effects on liver, kidneys, nervous system or blood in 180 day studies of rats, monkeys,
or hamsters.

HEALTH HAZARD DATA
EYE CONTACT: Vapor causes severe irritation and tearing. Contact with
liquid causes severe burns.
SKIN CONTACT: Liquid causes drying, cracking and scaling. Repeated
contact causes hardening of the skin and may cause dermatitis and
sensitization.
INHALATION: Causes irritation to nose, throat and respiratory tract.
Bronchopneumonia and edema possible from breathing high
concentrations.
INGESTION: May be fatal if swallowed. Severe inflammation of mouth,
throat or stomach. Blurring of vision or blindness may occur.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID:
EYE CONTACT: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician.
SKIN CONTACT: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and
shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Call a physician.
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration, then oxygen if necessary. Call a physician.
INGESTION: Induce vomiting immediately by giving two glasses of water and sticking finger down throat. Never give anything
by mouth to an unconscious person. Immediately call a physician.

SPILL AND DISPOSAL INFORMATION
SPILL OR LEAK: Ventilate area thoroughly - avoid breathing of vapor. Absorb liquid with vermiculite or dry earth. Flush area
with plenty of water.
WASTE DISPOSAL : Dispose of residue in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations.

IX. PROTECTION INFORMATION:
Respiratory Protection: Ventilation should be adequate to keep exposure limits below the Action Level (CFR 29 1910.1048) of
0.50 ppm. If limits are exceeded, a full-face NIOSH approved respirator should be used.
Ventilation: Local exhaust should be adequate to control exposure.
Eye Protection: Gas proof Goggles and Face Shield recommended.
Protective Gloves: Neoprene, Butyl or Polyvinyl Gloves.
X. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Keep containers closed. Store in cool, well-ventilated area away from open flame. Do not breathe vapor. Avoid
prolonged or repeated contact with skin. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
