Course Description<br />

This course provides immediately applicable<br />

practical <strong>in</strong>formation to help cl<strong>in</strong>icians better<br />

identify and treat the factors that impact<br />

successful oral feed<strong>in</strong>g of preterm and ill<br />

term <strong>in</strong>fants. Utiliz<strong>in</strong>g a multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

approach— both <strong>in</strong> the NICU and after<br />

discharge to early <strong>in</strong>tervention through the<br />

first six months—the course emphasizes<br />

strategies to facilitate <strong>in</strong>fant abilities and<br />

develop caregiver feed<strong>in</strong>g skills. The<br />

objective is to identify feed<strong>in</strong>g read<strong>in</strong>ess and<br />

provide <strong>in</strong>tervention strategies from a<br />

framework of normal development. A<br />

holistic approach <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g the medical<br />

fragility of these <strong>in</strong>fants is emphasized, us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the BROSS approach and the <strong>SOFFI</strong> ©<br />

Method.<br />

Course Objectives<br />

The participant will be able to:<br />

· Identify necessary components of <strong>in</strong>fant<br />

development that <strong>in</strong>dicate a read<strong>in</strong>ess to<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> and susta<strong>in</strong> oral feed<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

physiologic, motor and state organization.<br />

· Discuss the development of oral-motor<br />

skills <strong>in</strong> preterm <strong>in</strong>fants.<br />

· Describe the <strong>in</strong>teraction between medical<br />

and developmental level as they relate to<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g read<strong>in</strong>ess and the progression of<br />

normal feed<strong>in</strong>g skill development<br />

· Identify <strong>in</strong>fants who are not follow<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

normal progression.<br />

· Use the BROSS approach to identify the<br />

development of oral feed<strong>in</strong>g skills and use<br />

the <strong>SOFFI</strong> method to guide feed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

decisions and to plan supportive <strong>in</strong>tervention<br />

strategies.<br />

· Use pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of normal development and<br />

developmentally supportive care to facilitate<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g progression, to <strong>in</strong>clude contributions<br />

of both the family and the professional team.<br />

· Identify the impact of various medical<br />

conditions on oral feed<strong>in</strong>g success.<br />

Course Instructor<br />

Er<strong>in</strong> Sundseth Ross, Ph.D., received<br />

her Master’s degree <strong>in</strong> Speech and<br />

Language Pathology from California<br />

State University, Stanislaus <strong>in</strong> 1988.<br />

She received her Doctoral degree <strong>in</strong><br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Sciences – Health Services<br />

Research from the University of<br />

Colorado Health Sciences Center <strong>in</strong><br />

2007. Dr. Ross is currently a Cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

Instructor <strong>in</strong> the School of Medic<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

Department of Pediatrics, Section of<br />

Nutrition at the University of Colorado<br />

Denver, and she holds an honorary<br />

Research Fellow appo<strong>in</strong>tment with the<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Nutrition Research Center at<br />

the University of Queensland,<br />

Australia. She has specialized<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ically <strong>in</strong> the development of<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g skills, and the etiology and<br />

treatment of feed<strong>in</strong>g and growth<br />

problems <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>fants and very young<br />

children, and is the creator of the<br />

<strong>SOFFI</strong> Method © 2008. Dr. Ross’<br />

research <strong>in</strong>terests are focused on<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g feed<strong>in</strong>g and growth <strong>in</strong><br />

the medically fragile <strong>in</strong>fant, and on<br />

identify<strong>in</strong>g and treat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants and<br />

young children who are not develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

typically <strong>in</strong> these areas. She has over<br />

20 years of NICU experience, and has<br />

worked with pediatric populations <strong>in</strong><br />

an outpatient feed<strong>in</strong>g cl<strong>in</strong>ic – provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a perspective that crosses over the<br />

<strong>in</strong>itial hospitalization through the first<br />

5 years of life.<br />
