Head Coach Leslie King
7th Season • Cal State Fullerton ‘85 •
Head coach Leslie King enters her seventh season at the helm of the University of
Pennsylvania softball team. Since her arrival at Penn, King has coached 38 All-Ivy players,
including two-time Player of the Year (2006, 2008) Christina Khosravi and the 2007
Player of the Year, Annie Kinsey. In 2007, Kinsey also was named to the Easton All-
American second team. In addition, several of King’s players have entered the Penn record
books.
In 2009, Penn finished
second in the Ivy
South Division, with
seven players receiving
All-Ivy recognition,
including first-team
selections Alisha
Prystowsky and Kelsey
Wolfe. Earning the
honor for the second consecutive year, Prystowsky ranks
among Penn’s top career hitters after just two seasons of play.
In 2008, Khrosravi was named Ivy Player of the Year for
the second time in her career, while Jessie Lupardus was
named Rookie of the Year. The duo of Kinsey and Khrosravi
also finished at the top of most season and career offensive
records at Penn. As a team, the Quakers set the program record
for wins in a season (26).
After a record-breaking 2006 season, and with ten seniors
anchoring the squad, expectations were high for 2007, and the
team did not disappoint. The Red and Blue finished the year
as the best team in Penn softball history, winning the first Ivy
League South Division title in program history. As a team,
they set program records for runs scored (231), doubles (68),
home runs (46), RBI (216), and slugging percentage (.494).
Their team batting average of .301 was the second best in
program history.
Penn also made a name for itself on a national level. The
Quakers’ defense led the nation in double plays per game
(0.60) for almost the entire season. The team was also atop
the Ivy League in multiple categories. The Quakers led the
league in slugging percentage, on-base percentage (.378) and
home runs, and were second in the Ancient Eight in batting
average, runs, doubles, and RBI. But the real measure of
success for this squad was the improvement they saw from
the 2006 season, both offensively and in the circle. The team
scored 43 more runs, had 20 more home runs, 47 more RBI
and improved their slugging percentage, batting average and
on-base percentage. The pitching staff’s ERA went down 1.18
runs, as they allowed 38 fewer hits, 40 fewer runs, and 16
fewer home runs.
In 2006, the team went 18-26, tying an all-time record for
wins at Penn. The team led the Ivy League in batting average,
slugging percentage, hits, doubles, triples, walks and RBI’s.
Khosravi’s batting average of .407 was good for fourth alltime,
and Kinsey’s average of .393 was good for seventh alltime.
Prior to Penn, King was the head coach at George
Washington University where she was instrumental in
developing softball into a varsity sport for its inaugural
season in 2003. Prior to her stint at GW, King was the assistant
softball coach at Lock Haven University where she helped
lead the team to a school-record 37 wins and a berth in the
NCAA Regionals in 2002.
For 14 years, King was the starting shortstop for the New
Zealand National softball team and served as captain of the
squad that qualified for the Olympics in 2000. She was named
the 2000 New Zealand Player of the Year, and her team won a
silver medal at the World Championships that same season.
A dual athlete, King also played for the New Zealand
soccer team. She captained the squad at the 1991 FIFA World
Cup.
Her coaching tenure began in 1982 when she was a hitting
and catching instructor for the Grand Slam Academy and
served as a clinician at the Cal State Fullerton softball summer
camp. King also served as the regional coach for the New
Zealand Softball Association and was a player/coach for the
Ramblers and Metro softball clubs in that country until 1991.
King earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education
from Cal State Fullerton in 1985. While at Fullerton, she was
an Academic All-America nominee and a three-time member
of the Dean’s List.
A four-year starter at catcher for the nationally ranked
Fullerton softball program, King was a three-time allconference
honoree and helped lead her team to the Women’s
College World Series three times including a pair of runnerup
finishes. After her collegiate career, King earned a spot on
the 1985 USA National Team that toured South Korea and
China.
Assistant Coach
Third Season
Princeton ’05
Meet the Coaches
Melissa Finley begins her third season as Penn’s assistant coach. She
joined the Quaker staff for the 2008 season as the pitching coach after
graduating from Princeton in 2005. A four-year starter as a pitcher and
center fielder, she had a career record of 22-18 in the circle and a career
batting average of .334.
Finley led the Tigers to three NCAA Regional Tournament
appearances by winning three Ivy League championships (2002, 2003,
2005). She was the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2003 and an All-Ivy
selection all four years. Finley holds Princeton’s all-time and singleseason
records for home runs and is third all-time on the list for RBI’s.
Finley has also competed with the Canadian National Team and
participated in Canada Cups, U.S. Cups and won a silver medal at the
Pan-Am Games in 2003.
A native of London, Ontario (Canada), Finley earned her Princeton
degree in economics.
Quoting Coach King
What are your team’s goals for the 2010 season?
Our goal every year is to win the Ivy League title. This year is no different. We have a team heavy in underclassmen, but they
are loaded with talent. There are some very experienced teams in the League but we feel like we can compete with and beat
anyone on any given day.
Who will be your most competitive opponents this season? What will be the keys to winning those games?
We have a challenging non-league schedule against the usual regional opponents: Saint Joseph’s, Lehigh, Temple, Villanova, etc.
All of these teams are strong programs that will provide good preparation for League games. We always are competitive with
these teams and will need to be at our best to get the wins. Within the League, ‘09 champions Cornell returns virtually its entire
lineup and will be the team to beat along with perennial powers Princeton and Harvard. Dartmouth was the upstart team last
year and looks to be strong again in 2010. Again, it will be a matter of playing well on the day and bringing our best to each and
every game.
With four returning All-Ivy selections and eight newcomers, what do you see as the difference between this year’s team and
past teams that can give Penn softball its first Ivy title since 1981?
I believe we are bringing in more talent each year and getting better and better. That talent gives us a chance. One big key for us
will be the leadership of the returners. If they can show the way, the newcomers have the ability to perform at a very high level
and win some ball games.
What kind of offseason work has the team done to improve their skills and to prepare for the grueling pace of the season
(~48 games in ~55 days)?
This team has worked as hard or harder on its conditioning than any team we have had here at Penn. They have dedicated
themselves to getting in the best shape possible to handle the rigors of our schedule. Out of those physical workouts grows
mental toughness that will carry us through periods of pressure and fatigue.
What do you enjoy most about coaching at Penn?
I feel privileged to work with such bright and talented young women. I get to coach the sport I love and work with what I
consider to be the “cream of the crop” of student-athletes. They have infinite potential and possibilities ahead of them – that is
very exciting to be a part of!
2009 Season in Review
Despite graduating possibly the best two players to go
through the Penn softball program (Annie Kinsey and
Christina Khosravi), the young Quakers saw success in all
parts of the 2009 season, finishing second in the Ivy South
Division with a 10-10 conference record.
The season kicked off in late February when Penn headed
to the George Mason Tournament in Virginia. Thinking
they would find warmer weather, the tournament was
interrupted by snow and frigid air. The Red and Blue
managed to get three games in and returned to Philly
with an early 1-2 record, including a 6-1 win over the host
Patriots where Alisha Prystowsky recorded her first home
run of the season.
The Quakers followed their first tournament with the Rebel
Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. The Games have seen many
Penn teams come for early-season tune-ups, and this year it
provided Penn the same opportunity. The Quakers picked
up three wins over the week, while the newcomers became
accustomed to wearing the Penn uniform.
After three non-conference doubleheaders, the Quakers
hosted Dartmouth in the first of the Ancient Eight
matchups. Penn and the Big Green split the twinbill on
Warren Field, with Emily Denstedt picking up an 8-0 win
on the mound for the first shutout of the season for Penn.
After dropping two to Harvard to finish their opening Ivy
weekend, the Quakers split with Brown and swept Yale the
following weekend in their first Ivy road trip of 2009.
After a tough weekend in Ithaca, N.Y., falling to the
eventual Ivy South Champion Cornell, the Quakers finished
the Ivy season on a high note.
Penn’s back-to-back 3-1 weekends with Princeton and
Columbia propelled the team to a 10-10 league record that
allowed it to overcome Ivy nemesis Princeton in the final
stretch for second in the South Division. Denstedt and
Anna Puglisi were honored on senior day as the Red and
Blue downed Columbia 8-1 in game one and recorded an
8-6 come-from-behind win to close out the season.
Individually, it was a record-breaking season for quite a
few Quakers. Following a standout freshman campaign,
Prystowsky continued her success into her sophomore year,
putting herself on several of Penn’s hitting record lists and
earning first-team All-Ivy recognition. She holds a share of
the single-season doubles record (15) and is third in runs in
a season (35), while also leading the team with a .372 batting
average and starting all 44 games.
Junior Keiko Uraguchi earned second-team All-Ivy honors
as she once again commanded center field. With quick feet,
Keiko swiped 10 bases, good for fourth in a single season
and in a career (21).
First-team All-Ivy selection Kelsey Wolfe made big
contributions as a utility player in her sophomore season,
including a .353 batting average, a game-winning triple
against Yale, and 11 multi-hit games. Freshman Meg Krasne
also shined offensively, playing the designated player role.
Her clutch hitting added a spark to the Quakers’ end of the
season run and earned her honorable mention all-league
recognition.
Penn’s pitching staff was led by sophomore Jessie
Lupardus, who ended the season with a team-low 1.54
ERA, while striking out 91 – third highest in a single season.
Lupardus now headlines the program’s career strikeout
list with 268. Denstedt, sophomore Tory Satagaj, and
newcomers Chelsea Ott and Cailyn Hennessy provided
depth in the rotation and out of the bullpen for the Quakers.
Penn Athletics Hall of Fame
The University of Pennsylvania
athletic department established the
Penn Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996
to honor the greatest athletes and
coaches ever to wear and coach the
Red and Blue. After six induction
ceremonies, the list of honorees has
grown to include 152 people who
helped create Penn’s rich athletic
history and tradition. The Penn
softball program has been honored
with one member of this prestigious
collection of distinguished individuals.
Betty Tuppeny C’82
Betty Tuppeny is Penn softball’s alltime
leader in career wins (31) and
single-season victories (13), and is second
in complete games pitched (43).
Lettering for four seasons (1979-
82), Tuppeny led the Quakers to an
overall record of 49-20-1.
In 1981, the hallmark season of
Tuppeny’s collegiate career, she led
the team to the program’s only Ivy
League championship. That year she
posted a win-loss record of 13-3, hurling
more than 110 innings, striking
out 33 batters and recording a careerbest
ERA of 1.45. Her stellar skills on
the mound helped the Quakers to a
1981 regular-season record of 18-4.
The Quakers captured their secondconsecutive
regional championship,
compiling a 4-0 record, and also
hosted and won the Philadelphia and
Ivy League tournaments.
The name “Tuppeny” is not an
unfamiliar one to the University of
Pennsylvania Athletic Department
or its Hall of Fame. James “Tup”
Tuppeny, father of Betty and prolific
track and field coach and Director of
the Penn Relays for 18 years, was a
member of the Second Class of the
Athletic Hall of Fame which was
inducted in 1998. The Tuppeny’s are
the only father-daughter combination
in the Penn Athletics Hall of Fame.
Home of the Quakers
Warren Field is home to the Penn softball program. Made possible
by a gift from Penn alum Judy Warren Bartos, CW’62, Warren Field is located below the
Philadelphia skyline on the western bank of the Schuylkill River at the southeast end of the
University City campus. After the 2005 season, vast improvements were made to the playing
surface. A brand new grass and dirt surface, along with a warning track around the outside
of the field, were added. A new drainage system was also put in underneath the playing
surface. A new seating area was erected in the fall of 2002 and Warren Field can now hold
more than 200 spectators. It is also handicapped accessible.
Quaker Mascot
Penn’s sports teams are nicknamed the Quakers after the religion adopted by
William Penn, who established Pennsylvania as a Quaker province. Today, we see
the Quaker at Penn football and basketball games. In the 1920s, a proposal was made
to change the Quaker mascot to the Penguin, but the students found the animal was
too weak as a representative.
Penn Songs
“The Red and the Blue” is probably
the most well-known Penn song, and
is sung at the end of many Penn events.
It was written in 1896 and places the
origins of Penn’s colors as a combination
of those of the best of her rivals. Arm
motions accompany the song’s refrain.
Other popular songs include “Fight On,
Pennsylvania!” and “Drink a Highball.”
The Button
Created by Claes Oldenberg and installed
in front of Van Pelt Library in 1981, the
Button is 16 feet in diameter, weighs
5,000 pounds, and is cast in reinforced
aluminum. Oldenberg once told the
Philadelphia Inquirer that “the Split represents the Schuylkill. It divides the button
into four parts — for William Penn’s original Philadelphia squares.”
Spring Fling
Since the 70s, Spring Fling has been the ultimate student festival at Penn. Beginning
in 1972, with an attendance between ten and fifteen thousand, students descend
onto the Quad, Hill Square, College Green, and Wynn Commons to dance, eat, party,
and enjoy a day full of surprises. Each Spring Fling consists of a carnival with games and
events, a concert hosting high-profile bands, and the Quad concerts, which showcase
some of the hottest local bands and performers.
Hey Day
In 1916, Hey Day was established as a “Moving-Up” celebration - a formal day to mark
the advancement of each class. In recent decades, Hey Day, which is unique to Penn,
represents the official passage of the junior class to senior status and is characterized by
thousands of marching students parading around campus sporting fake straw hats, red
t-shirts and canes.
Penn Traditions
The Red and Blue
Come all ye loyal classmen now,
in hall and campus through,
Lift up your hearts and voices for
the royal Red and Blue.
Fair Harvard has her crimson,
Old Yale her colors too.
But for dear Pennsylvania,
we wear the Red and Blue.
Chorus:
Hurrah! Hurrah! Pennsylvan-I-ah!
Hurrah for the Red and Blue!
Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!
Hurrah for the Red and Blue!
Fight On!
Fight on, Pennsylvania!
Put the ball across that line.
Fight you Pennsylvanians!
There it goes across this time.
Red and blue we’re with you
And we’re cheering for your men.
So it’s fight, fight, fight Pennsylvania
Fight on for Penn!
Toast Throwing
Toast throwing is one of the most unique
sporting traditions in which crowds of Quakers
fans perform as a sign of school pride. After the
third quarter of home football games, fans unite
in the singing of “Drink a Highball.” As the last
line is sung—“Here’s a toast to dear old Penn”—
the fans toss toasted bread to the sidelines. The
act of throwing toast was adopted after alcohol
was banned from the stadium in the 1970s.
Students turned towards bread, and even bagels,
so that they could continue to raise a “toast” to
Making History—Penn Eliminates Loans
Over the past three years ... Penn has moved
aggressively to enhance its undergraduate financial aid
programs, including the elimination of loans for students
from families with income under $50,000 in 2006, with that
threshold increasing to $60,000 in 2007.
Through these efforts, the number of students attending
Penn has doubled in families below this income threshold. In
addition, the benefit of these moves has been demonstrated
through the increase in the number of no-loan packages from
31-percent to 49-percent of the grant-aided admitted freshman
class. In addition, the new policies have decreased the average
debt at graduation from $20,927 in 2006 to $18,800 in 2007, a
decrease of 10-percent.
Effective for the 2009-10 academic year, a
student admitted to Penn who is eligible to
receive financial aid will no longer have to
take on any loans to study at Penn.
With the enthusiastic support of the Penn Trustees, President
Gutmann announced a bold new initiative to eliminate loans
for all students eligible for financial aid, regardless of family
income. Consequently, effective for the 2009-10 academic
year, a student admitted to Penn who is eligible to receive
financial aid will no longer have to take on any loans to study
at Penn. This transformative initiative will continue Penn’s
commitment to lower- and lower-middle income students
while also lifting the burden off of students from middle- and
upper-middle income families, who typically have carried the
greatest debt from higher education.
Financial Aid
We urge you not to let financial concerns deter you from
applying to Penn. The University guarantees that any accepted
student who matriculates with demonstrated financial need
will receive a financial-aid package that meets the full extent of
the student’s need for a full four years.
• 55-percent of all undergraduates receive some form of
financial aid, including grant, loan and work-study job.
• 40-percent of all undergraduates are eligible for needbased
aid.
• This year Penn will award over $102 million in grant aid
• Beginning in fall 2008, all undergraduate students – not
just entering freshmen – from families with calculated
incomes under $100,000 will receive no-loan aid packages.
Families with incomes above that level will receive a 10-
percent reduction in need-based loans.
• Beginning in fall 2009, all undergraduate students eligible
for financial aid will receive loan-free aid packages,
regardless of family income level.
• This new initiative is the latest step in the University’s
goal to make a Penn education affordable and accessible
to students from a wide spectrum of economic
backgrounds. Penn currently spends more than
$90 million per year of its resources for grant aid to
undergraduate students. When the new initiative is fully
implemented, that figure will exceed $110 million — an
increase of more than 20-percent.
• The new financial aid initiative is expected to benefit more
than 40-percent of Penn’s undergraduates. The University
will finance this initiative largely through funds raised
from its recently launched, five-year, $3.5 billion “Making
History” capital campaign, which includes a $350 million
goal for undergraduate financial aid endowment. During
the silent phase of the campaign Penn raised over 400 new
aid scholarships.
• Penn also recently launched a new outreach program
targeting hundreds of schools and thousands of students
from low and middle income families — who might never
have considered applying to Penn — to let them know
that if they can get accepted to Penn, they will receive a
full financial aid package with no loans.
The Ivy League By the Numbers
Since 2000, the Ivy League has...
• Produced NCAA individual champions
in seven sports and NCAA team championships
in four sports. The League
has also captured national champions
in the non-NCAA sports such as men’s
squash and men’s rowing. All eight
Ivy League schools have had at least
one NCAA champion—individual or
team—during this span.
• Amassed more than 100 All-Americans
each year.
• Averaged more than a dozen Academic
All-Americans each year, including an
all-time high of 18 in 2006-07.
• Had 162 competitors at the four Olympic
Games (2000, ’02, ’04 and ’06). Those
162 have collected 53 medals, including
18 gold.
• Sent numerous athletes into the professional
ranks — the Women’s United
Soccer Association, National Football
League, Major League Soccer, Major
League Lacrosse, National Hockey
League and Major League Baseball.
• Became the first conference to “sweep”
the four major NCAA Honors in the
same year (2006).
Study Abroad
• Penn offers opportunities to study abroad
on more than 125 programs in 60 countries.
Now in his 16th year at his alma mater,
Steve Bilsky has created a rich environment
for student-athletes to thrive athletically
and academically.
During his tenure, 77 Penn teams have
earned conference championships in 21
different sports. Penn has been honored
with more than 300 Academic All-Ivy
honorees, 27 Ivy League Players of the Year,
and 97 All-Americans.
To support that success, Bilsky has made
efforts to secure the best facilities and
coaching for Penn. Since raising $800,000 in
1994, Penn Athletics has nearly quadrupled
the athletic department’s annual Weightman
Fund, topping three million dollars in
both 2007 and 2008. Through discreet
fundraising drives, Penn Athletics has
built or renovated more than 15 facilities.
In terms of personnel, the department has
received specific donations to endow nine
head coaching positions as well as the Penn
Relays directorship.
Bilsky has also raised Penn’s profile
nationally, as during his tenure the University has been the
host institution for six NCAA Championships.
In 1996, Bilsky formed the Penn Athletic Hall of Fame; a
total of six classes have been inducted, the latest in May 2008.
Before returning to Penn in 1994, Bilsky was executive
director of the Department of Athletics and Recreation at
George Washington University. Prior to that, he was assistant
director of athletics at Penn (1979-83). His educational
background includes a Master’s degree in counseling
psychology from the Oregon in 1975, and a bachelor’s in
economics from Penn’s Wharton School in 1971.
A basketball standout, Bilsky was a three-time All-Ivy
guard and captained a Penn team that was arguably the greatest in program
history—in 1970-71, the Quakers went undefeated through the regular season
and NCAA Tournament before finally losing to Villanova in the Eastern
Regional final. Bilsky is a member of the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame
(1988), the Penn Athletic Hall of Fame (1998), and the Philadelphia Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame (2002).
Bilsky’s wife, Sue, is a 1975 graduate of the Penn College of Arts and
Sciences and the Graduate School of Education. She also holds a Master’s
degree from Wharton. Their son Jeff recently graduated from Penn, while
daughter Katie enrolled at Penn in 2007.
Penn Athletics Sport Boards
The Penn Athletics Sports Boards represent all of Penn’s 33 varsity sports
and consist of a diverse group of individuals, including former athletes,
alumni, parents, and friends of Penn Athletics. Membership is open to
anyone interested in becoming more personally involved with their particular
sport and with Penn Athletics overall. These sport specific volunteer organizations
provide vital support to the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate
Athletics staff and coaches. They actively promote the continued importance
of Recreation and Athletics in leadership and teamwork development as part
of a Penn education.
The purpose of each Sports Board is to supply information about Penn
teams and Penn Athletics to its alumni, parents, and friends. They also provide
a vital support network for today’s student-athletes through mentoring
and career advising. Sports Board members create an important “peer-topeer”
link and emphasize that a lifelong fiscal and personal support of their
sport and Penn Athletics is a critical component of their athletics experience
at Penn. Through the sponsoring of career networking and job placement,
hosting of special events including receptions, alumni games, and the raising
of money to support their sport and Penn Athletics as a whole, Sports Board
members augment the experience of current Penn student-athletes. These
dedicated volunteers forge a strong connection between Penn Athletics and
the alumni community and use their professional and personal expertise
to ensure that Penn reaches its lofty fundraising goals, sustains a loyal and
spirited community, and maintains a network of active alumni to continue
Penn Athletics’ rich tradition of excellence and personal distinction.
Coach and Sport Endowments
In order to strengthen Penn’s coaches and their programs—and
to ensure the highest benefit to our student-athletes—Penn Athletics
actively seeks financial support to endow its head coaching positions.
Establishing an endowed fund with Penn Athletics allows individuals
and families to ensure that our coaches and student-athletes have
a perpetual and consistent support base well into the future. It is an
important way for donors to recognize that participation in athletics
is an important part of the entire educational experience. It also pays
tribute to the important role coaches perform as educators, mentors
and friends, while providing real financial benefits for their programs.
The following coaching positions are currently endowed:
W. Joseph Blood Head Coach of Baseball
John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men’s Basketball
George A. Munger Head Coach of Football
Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse: Anonymous
Penn Connects
Penn Connects, the Campus Development
Planning Study for the University
of Pennsylvania was submitted by
Sasaki Associates in June 2006. The
plan acknowledges the unprecedented
opportunity to transform the Penn campus
in response to the acquisition of property
along the Schuylkill River. This campus
expansion of contiguous land will enable
the University, for the first time in history,
to establish a major physical presence
along the Schuylkill River corridor, create
new gateways to the campus from the city,
and establish new connections with the
surrounding communities.
In terms of Penn Athletics, the planning
study aims to create a signature new urban
park to include sports and recreation
fields east of Franklin Field on the site of
the existing Bower Field and the surface
parking areas of the postal lands. This
“once in a generation” opportunity will
also enable Penn Athletics to address many
of its programmatic needs, as well as key
priorities that may arise over the next
several years.
Though still in the planning stages and
subject to change, Penn Athletics intends to
create the Franklin Field Pavilion to house
existing named spaces as well as some new
construction and renovation of existing
spaces. The north side of the stadium, inside
the arcades, would include the Avery Blake
Lacrosse Complex, the George A.
Munger Complex, a new 15,000 square foot
intercollegiate varsity weight room, a new
recreational fitness center to complement
the state-of-the-art Pottruck Health and
Fitness Center built in 2003, retail space, a
renovated and enhanced training room and
locker facilities. In addition, there are plans
to build two synthetic turf fields and two
smaller grass fields (all for intercollegiate
and recreational use), a new softball-specific
stadium, outdoor tennis complex and a
seasonal air structure that will serve as an
indoor practice facility that can be raised
and lowered during the winter months.
Another major change on the landscape
of the athletics area of campus is the creation
of the Palestra Green; a green quadrangle in
front of the Palestra and adjacent to Franklin
Field that would be part of the urban park
extending along the banks of the river. The
tennis courts, currently outside the Palestra,
will be moved to a new outdoor tennis
center on the existing Bower Field.
These plans hope to provide for a series of
new public gathering and circulation spaces
in the Palestra and Franklin Field area that
serve to link the newly acquired property,
campus and community.
