Thailand, Germany, Spa<strong>in</strong>, the Netherlands, Pak<strong>is</strong>tan and Tun<strong>is</strong>ia. While there are<br />

also changes <strong>in</strong> the curricula and teach<strong>in</strong>g methods <strong>for</strong> <strong>pathology</strong> <strong>in</strong> postgraduate<br />

<strong>medical</strong> education 1,2 , th<strong>is</strong> essay will focus on the literature surround<strong>in</strong>g changes <strong>in</strong><br />

undergraduate <strong>medical</strong> curricula.<br />

Pathology may be def<strong>in</strong>ed as ‘the study of d<strong>is</strong>ease processes with the aim of<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g their nature and causes’ 3 . In practice, it <strong>in</strong>cludes the d<strong>is</strong>cipl<strong>in</strong>es of<br />

t<strong>is</strong>sue <strong>pathology</strong> (h<strong>is</strong>to<strong>pathology</strong>, cyto<strong>pathology</strong> and autopsy), microbiology,<br />

immu<strong>no</strong>logy, haematology, cl<strong>in</strong>ical chem<strong>is</strong>try, and molecular <strong>pathology</strong>. Much of the<br />

literature focuses on t<strong>is</strong>sue <strong>pathology</strong> – a prejudice which <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>evitably reflected <strong>in</strong><br />

th<strong>is</strong> essay.<br />

It <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>pathology</strong> <strong>is</strong> apparently becom<strong>in</strong>g a less prom<strong>in</strong>ent feature<br />

of <strong>medical</strong> curricula at a time when fictional patholog<strong>is</strong>ts are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly prom<strong>in</strong>ent:<br />

<strong>for</strong>ensic <strong>pathology</strong> <strong>is</strong> featur<strong>in</strong>g even more heavily on telev<strong>is</strong>ion shows, such as the<br />

successful CSI franch<strong>is</strong>e 4 , and Silent Witness; and the recent critically-acclaimed film<br />

adaptation of Somerset Maugham’s The Pa<strong>in</strong>ted Veil even stars Edward Norton as a<br />

microbiolog<strong>is</strong>t. Could popular culture have a role <strong>in</strong> ra<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g the profile of <strong>pathology</strong>?<br />

Integrated <strong>pathology</strong> courses <strong>in</strong> the USA<br />

Some of the best data <strong>for</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g the chang<strong>in</strong>g face of <strong>modern</strong> <strong>medical</strong><br />

curricula <strong>in</strong> general, and the <strong>place</strong> of <strong>pathology</strong> <strong>in</strong> particular, come from large-scale,<br />

longitud<strong>in</strong>al studies of <strong>medical</strong> curricula. For example, Kumar et al. conducted a<br />

study of 83 <strong>medical</strong> schools <strong>in</strong> the USA, us<strong>in</strong>g a questionnaire to assess the chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

structure of <strong>pathology</strong> curricula over a seven-year period, from 1993-1999 5 . They<br />

found that, as one might expect, the teach<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>pathology</strong> had been <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly
