WELCOME<br />

From Steve Boxall<br />

Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arts Str<strong>at</strong>egy Group and<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Capital Projects, RUH<br />

It has been a lively and fulfilling year for <strong>the</strong> Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> team, so much so <strong>the</strong>re’s really only one word th<strong>at</strong> can<br />

sum it all up; diversity. It is astonishing how varied and exciting <strong>the</strong> programme has been and this <strong>report</strong> celebr<strong>at</strong>es<br />

<strong>the</strong> achievements and contribution <strong>the</strong> <strong>art</strong>s have made to our healing environment.<br />

We continue to raise money through <strong>the</strong> Capital Programme, our exhibition sales, grants, sponsorship and ongoing<br />

support from <strong>the</strong> Trust’s Charities Committee. This ensures th<strong>at</strong> all <strong>of</strong> our running and development costs<br />

are independently funded and <strong>the</strong> programme can been seen as a welcome and beneficial addition to <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

RUH.<br />

The team has expanded this year to include some new members who will introduce <strong>the</strong>mselves l<strong>at</strong>er in this <strong>report</strong>. If<br />

you see <strong>the</strong>m about <strong>the</strong> hospital do stop for a ch<strong>at</strong> and let <strong>the</strong>m know wh<strong>at</strong> you think <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>art</strong>s programme as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

always welcome constructive feedback. I would like to thank <strong>the</strong> team for <strong>the</strong>ir tremendous energy, enthusiasm and<br />

hard work this year, p<strong>art</strong>icularly <strong>the</strong> volunteers. We couldn’t do it without you.<br />

Lastly, we are planning a staff exhibition, something I have been keen to see happen for some time, and we now<br />

have <strong>the</strong> resources to get <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> ground. I know <strong>the</strong>re are lots <strong>of</strong> <strong>art</strong>ists out <strong>the</strong>re so this is your chance to<br />

shine and maybe even sell your work!<br />

The RUH is rightly proud <strong>of</strong> its innov<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>art</strong>s programme, which has grown to be one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best in <strong>the</strong> country,<br />

and I hope th<strong>at</strong> you have many opportunities to experience and enjoy <strong>the</strong> variety <strong>of</strong> works and events th<strong>at</strong> will<br />

continue to take place throughout <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

By Hetty Dupays<br />

Arts Programme Manager<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main developments <strong>at</strong> Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> this<br />

year has been <strong>the</strong> recruitment <strong>of</strong> a talented team <strong>of</strong> p<strong>art</strong><br />

time staff, which includes an Exhibitions Cur<strong>at</strong>or, Music<br />

Coordin<strong>at</strong>or, Artist in Residence on <strong>the</strong> Children’s Ward<br />

and most recently, following a successful bid from B&NES<br />

Arts Development for funding from April 20<strong>11</strong>-14, <strong>the</strong><br />

appointment <strong>of</strong> a p<strong>art</strong> time Marketing and Audience<br />

Development Officer.<br />

The cre<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> this team has helped transform my role<br />

and I am now able to concentr<strong>at</strong>e on fundraising, str<strong>at</strong>egic<br />

planning and management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>art</strong>s programme. It has<br />

also enabled me to work more closely with Capital Projects<br />

to integr<strong>at</strong>e quality <strong>art</strong> and design into <strong>the</strong> fabric <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH,<br />

including <strong>the</strong> new Dyson Centre for Neon<strong>at</strong>al Intensive Care<br />

(NICU) and <strong>the</strong> major RUH central corridor refurbishment<br />

project, which I have enjoyed enormously.<br />

Art, music and design projects have become more firmly<br />

embedded into <strong>the</strong> fabric <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH. The exhibitions<br />

programme continues to inspire and we continue to seek<br />

out challenging projects. Most recently Wiltshire College<br />

Performing Arts dep<strong>art</strong>ment staged a production <strong>of</strong> Macbeth<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Atrium. Not only did this <strong>of</strong>fer entertainment for<br />

p<strong>at</strong>ients, staff and visitors in <strong>the</strong> evening, when <strong>the</strong> hospital<br />

is very quiet, it also gave students <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

present <strong>the</strong>ir work in a new environment. We look forward to<br />

developing this strand <strong>of</strong> pop up <strong>the</strong><strong>at</strong>re and performance<br />

over <strong>the</strong> next year.<br />

Funding has become increasingly challenging this year but<br />

we continue to find new ways to raise money. Our most<br />

recent success came via an auction with <strong>the</strong> B<strong>at</strong>h Galleries<br />

Group <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Octagon in early July 20<strong>11</strong>with around £8000<br />

coming to Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong>. We are also applying for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

funding for <strong>art</strong> projects on <strong>the</strong> Children’s Ward and a large<br />

music project for p<strong>at</strong>ients who have Dementia on <strong>the</strong> Older<br />

P<strong>at</strong>ients’ Unit.<br />

Hetty gained a BA Hons in 2000 and an MA in Fine Art<br />

Painting in 2004 from B<strong>at</strong>h Spa University (BSU). She has<br />

been involved with Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> since 2001, initially<br />

working as a volunteer for three years. Hetty was <strong>the</strong>n<br />

employed by Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> when funding was secured in<br />

2004. She has since developed and managed <strong>the</strong> growing<br />

Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> programme, including a visual <strong>art</strong>s strand;<br />

interior design and <strong>art</strong> for Capital Projects; a music strand<br />

and p<strong>art</strong>icip<strong>at</strong>ory <strong>art</strong>s on <strong>the</strong> Children’s Ward and Older<br />

People’s Unit.<br />

She still finds time to paint and will be exhibiting her<br />

paintings in <strong>the</strong> staff exhibition in early 2012.<br />

Tony Smith<br />

Exhibitions<br />

Cur<strong>at</strong>or<br />

Sharmila Bousa<br />

Audience and<br />

Marketing Officer<br />

Rosie Campbell<br />

Coordin<strong>at</strong>or,<br />

Soundbite:<br />

Hospital Notes<br />

Tony is a BA Fine Art gradu<strong>at</strong>e from<br />

Falmouth School <strong>of</strong> Art, who has 20<br />

years’ worth <strong>of</strong> experience working as<br />

an exhibitions organiser, technician<br />

and photographer for <strong>art</strong>ists, galleries<br />

and museums, including Arnolfini,<br />

Spike Island and Peter Brown. He also<br />

worked for eleven years with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royal</strong><br />

Photographic Society and as a studio<br />

assistant with Damien Hirst. More<br />

recently Tony was responsible for <strong>the</strong><br />

install<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dressing <strong>the</strong> Stars<br />

exhibition <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fashion Museum in<br />

B<strong>at</strong>h. He occasionally exhibits his own<br />

photographs and has been Exhibitions<br />

Cur<strong>at</strong>or <strong>of</strong> Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH<br />

since January <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

After gradu<strong>at</strong>ing with a BA in Fine Art<br />

from Nottingham Trent University<br />

in 2002 Sharmila went on to direct<br />

Trampoline, a Nottingham and<br />

Berlin based <strong>art</strong>s organis<strong>at</strong>ion where<br />

she cur<strong>at</strong>ed a number <strong>of</strong> events<br />

for emerging digital <strong>art</strong>ists. After a<br />

year in Berlin her flare for cre<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

marketing, audience development<br />

and writing saw her work with various<br />

<strong>art</strong>s organis<strong>at</strong>ions and young people’s<br />

projects across Cornwall and <strong>the</strong><br />

southwest. In <strong>2010</strong> she moved to<br />

Bristol where she has been working<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Community Arts Therapies<br />

Project and Inbetween Time Festival <strong>of</strong><br />

Live Art and Intrigue. Sharmila joined<br />

<strong>the</strong> Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> team in May 20<strong>11</strong>.<br />

She still puts her hand to <strong>the</strong> odd bit<br />

<strong>of</strong> screen-printing and painting and<br />

like Hetty hopes to exhibit in <strong>the</strong> staff<br />

exhibition.<br />

Rosie Campbell is a pr<strong>of</strong>essional,<br />

young musician. After gradu<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

from B<strong>at</strong>h Spa University in <strong>2010</strong> she<br />

founded her own business, Musica,<br />

which provides music workshops for<br />

older adults. Rosie is keen to explore<br />

<strong>the</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionship between music,<br />

health and well-being and is about<br />

to embark on a Masters Degree in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Psychology <strong>of</strong> Music. Rosie has<br />

been with Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> since 2009,<br />

initially giving her time as a Voluntary<br />

Musician in Residence. In <strong>2010</strong> she was<br />

appointed to coordin<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> Soundbite<br />

programme. In her spare time Rosie<br />

enjoys going on long walks in rural<br />

Dorset where she lives with her fiancé<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir dog.<br />

THE ART AT THE HEART PROGRAMME<br />

The Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> Programme has grown significantly<br />

over <strong>the</strong> last two years to include four main project strands;<br />

Visual Art, Music, P<strong>art</strong>icip<strong>at</strong>ory and Capital Projects. Over <strong>the</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong> 20<strong>11</strong>-2012 we will also be looking <strong>at</strong> developing a<br />

The<strong>at</strong>re and Performance strand.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> successful st<strong>art</strong> <strong>of</strong> our marketing project, which<br />

began in February <strong>2010</strong> and included <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

an Arts Map and new website, which launched in Autumn<br />

<strong>2010</strong>, we are set to fur<strong>the</strong>r increase marketing activity in<br />

20<strong>11</strong>-2012 with <strong>the</strong> appointment <strong>of</strong> Sharmila Bousa <strong>the</strong><br />

new Marketing and Audience Development Officer. The<br />

continuing aim is to promote awareness and pride in <strong>the</strong><br />

programme and increase our scope for community advocacy<br />

and sales, especially within <strong>the</strong> wards and dep<strong>art</strong>ments <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> RUH.<br />

VISUAL ARTS Exhibitions<br />

Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> has turned <strong>the</strong> corridors, public and clinical<br />

areas and courtyards <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH into B<strong>at</strong>h’s biggest and<br />

most accessible gallery, open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.<br />

Through a programme <strong>of</strong> exhibitions, p<strong>art</strong>icip<strong>at</strong>ory<br />

commissions and involvement in capital developments Art <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> integr<strong>at</strong>es visual <strong>art</strong>s into <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospital,<br />

supporting <strong>the</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> quality care, soothing and lifting<br />

everyone who uses <strong>the</strong> hospital and enlivening <strong>the</strong> building<br />

and grounds.<br />

Our exhibitions have continued to earn a high reput<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

across B<strong>at</strong>h & North East Somerset. This year has included<br />

works by pr<strong>of</strong>essional and am<strong>at</strong>eur <strong>art</strong>ists, p<strong>at</strong>ients, RUH<br />

staff, local <strong>art</strong>ists, photography and print groups, students<br />

and schools. Our pr<strong>of</strong>ile was increased fur<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>2010</strong> by<br />

joining <strong>the</strong> B<strong>at</strong>h Galleries Group and taking p<strong>art</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir citywide<br />

Art Affair from November 12th – 21st <strong>2010</strong>. We have<br />

also developed a p<strong>art</strong>nership with Quest Gallery in B<strong>at</strong>h to<br />

present a series <strong>of</strong> exhibitions in <strong>the</strong> South Corridor.<br />

The Central Corridor presents temporary 10 week<br />

exhibitions, which keep <strong>the</strong> spaces fresh. These exhibitions<br />

can also be seen in <strong>the</strong> North Corridor (outside Oncology<br />

Outp<strong>at</strong>ients) <strong>the</strong> South Corridor (towards Princess Anne<br />

Wing) and <strong>the</strong> West Corridor (towards <strong>the</strong> Children’s Centre),<br />

which is reserved for work by young <strong>art</strong>ists.<br />

Although exhibitions are not programmed with <strong>the</strong> primary<br />

intent to make revenue for our fund we make steady sales<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> year and for <strong>the</strong> period <strong>2010</strong>-20<strong>11</strong> we have<br />

raised over £4000 directly from sales.<br />

VISUAL ARTS Children’s Ward Artist in Residence<br />

From March <strong>2010</strong> to March 20<strong>11</strong> Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> received<br />

funding from Big Lottery Awards for All to run <strong>art</strong>s projects<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Children’s Ward. Local <strong>art</strong>ist Edwina Bridgeman has<br />

been visiting <strong>the</strong> ward fortnightly to run workshops in <strong>the</strong><br />

playroom, with <strong>the</strong> play specialists taking <strong>the</strong> workshop<br />

<strong>the</strong>mes and building on <strong>the</strong> work st<strong>art</strong>ed in Edwina’s<br />

sessions.<br />

Edwina was keen to maintain <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> her own practice<br />

by making work from found objects. She brought large<br />

bags <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erials into <strong>the</strong> ward, which she used to set up a<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>ive space in <strong>the</strong> playroom and on trays th<strong>at</strong> could be<br />

carried to children unable to leave <strong>the</strong>ir beds.<br />

The energy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project has come from explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

m<strong>at</strong>erials and ideas, with play and experiment<strong>at</strong>ion key to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ethos <strong>of</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> we do <strong>at</strong> Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong>. All <strong>the</strong> sessions<br />

have been very different and inspiring. Numbers have, as<br />

expected varied, with around 10 p<strong>at</strong>ients plus <strong>the</strong>ir parents<br />

<strong>at</strong>tending each session.<br />

The children on <strong>the</strong> ward also contributed towards <strong>the</strong><br />

Olympic Arts Project Exhibition on display in <strong>the</strong> main<br />

corridor, and were inspired to cre<strong>at</strong>e a Stadium <strong>of</strong> Thumb-<br />

Print People and a Medal Podium.<br />

From April 20<strong>11</strong> to September 20<strong>11</strong> <strong>the</strong> project has been<br />

self-funded by Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> with fur<strong>the</strong>r funding being<br />

sought from <strong>the</strong> Arts Council.<br />

12

Edwina Bridgman<br />

Artist-in-residence<br />

Edwina has worked as a visual <strong>art</strong>ist for <strong>the</strong> past 15 years.<br />

Her practice is sculpture based and she works extensively<br />

with found m<strong>at</strong>erials. She shows her work n<strong>at</strong>ionally<br />

and intern<strong>at</strong>ionally, with work in both public and priv<strong>at</strong>e<br />

collections. Outreach work is very important to Edwina and<br />

she sees it feeding directly into her own practice. As well<br />

as being <strong>art</strong>ist in residence on <strong>the</strong> Children’s Ward she is<br />

a 5x5x5 <strong>art</strong>ist working <strong>at</strong> B<strong>at</strong>heaston School and works<br />

regularly for Barnardos.<br />

VISUAL ARTS Anim<strong>at</strong>e Me!<br />

The Anim<strong>at</strong>e Me! Project was funded by Mediabox and<br />

designed by p<strong>at</strong>ients on <strong>the</strong> Adolescent Unit <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH and<br />

young people who are supported by <strong>the</strong> hospital through <strong>the</strong><br />

Home Educ<strong>at</strong>ion and Re-integr<strong>at</strong>ion Service (HERS).<br />

Young people wanted a project which would give <strong>the</strong>m an<br />

opportunity to use imagin<strong>at</strong>ion, storytelling and anim<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

to cre<strong>at</strong>e an altern<strong>at</strong>e world. These narr<strong>at</strong>ives are explored<br />

through a series <strong>of</strong> brilliant short films cre<strong>at</strong>ed with support<br />

from anim<strong>at</strong>or-in-residence, Elle Farnham, from renowned<br />

anim<strong>at</strong>ion company, Suited and Booted.<br />

The young people not only had cre<strong>at</strong>ive input through<br />

storytelling and character and narr<strong>at</strong>ive design but also<br />

directed <strong>the</strong> films, led workshops, edited, cre<strong>at</strong>ed audio<br />

input and organised a screening in <strong>the</strong> hospital. The amount<br />

<strong>of</strong> work accomplished in a rel<strong>at</strong>ively short amount <strong>of</strong> time<br />

was fantastic.<br />

The finished films were screened <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Little The<strong>at</strong>re, B<strong>at</strong>h.<br />

To d<strong>at</strong>e two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> films have been entered into Anim<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

Exeter, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK’s top intern<strong>at</strong>ional anim<strong>at</strong>ion festivals.<br />

We hope th<strong>at</strong> this is <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> many digital <strong>art</strong>s based<br />

projects <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH.<br />

‘I have really enjoyed cre<strong>at</strong>ing ideas, and make <strong>the</strong>se<br />

ideas come to life and interacting with <strong>the</strong> ideas through<br />

performing in <strong>the</strong> film. It has also helped me fur<strong>the</strong>r my<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ion through applying to college.’<br />

Joe McPhee, Anim<strong>at</strong>e Me! Project p<strong>art</strong>icipant (HERS)<br />

MUSIC Soundbite: Lunch Time Performances<br />

The Soundbite performance programme is an initi<strong>at</strong>ive th<strong>at</strong><br />

brings a diverse range <strong>of</strong> live music to <strong>the</strong> communal areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH and <strong>the</strong> wards, including <strong>the</strong> Older People’s Unit<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Paedi<strong>at</strong>ric Ward. Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> Music Co-ordin<strong>at</strong>or,<br />

Rosie Campbell, programmes and oversees <strong>the</strong> performances<br />

with <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> volunteers and students from B<strong>at</strong>h Spa<br />

University.<br />

We have had an exciting year and have heard a range <strong>of</strong><br />

highly talented musicians performing on a wide variety <strong>of</strong><br />

instruments. In November we were privileged to have a<br />

performance from Claire Jones, <strong>the</strong> Official Harpist to His<br />

<strong>Royal</strong> Highness <strong>the</strong> Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales.<br />

We have had some really diverse performances by musicians<br />

from Live Music Now, <strong>the</strong>se included talented performers<br />

such as vocalist Sian Cameron, wind ensemble W3 and<br />

classical guitarist Dimitris Dekavallas. Students from B<strong>at</strong>h<br />

Spa University and members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local community provided<br />

recitals, including B<strong>at</strong>h Philharmonia <strong>the</strong> Sulis Wind Trio, and<br />

vocalist Laura Lewis. We enjoyed hearing C<strong>at</strong>herine Hurley, a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH staff, perform on her flute accompanied<br />

by Bethany Porter playing cello.<br />

As with <strong>the</strong> Visual Art strand we want to encourage more<br />

members <strong>of</strong> staff to step forward and show us wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

do.<br />

We would like to thank <strong>the</strong> Joyce Fletcher Charitable Trust for<br />

supporting our Soundbite performance programme over <strong>the</strong><br />

last two years.<br />

Soundbite: Hospital Notes<br />

The Hospital Notes programme was funded from April<br />

<strong>2010</strong> to March 20<strong>11</strong> by Big Lottery Awards for All. Since<br />

April 20<strong>11</strong> RUH Charitable Funds have provided continued<br />

funding.<br />

From June <strong>2010</strong> to February 20<strong>11</strong> Rosie Campbell led<br />

interactive music workshops <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Combe Ward on <strong>the</strong><br />

Older People’s Unit (OPU). The aim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project was to<br />

increase <strong>the</strong> well-being <strong>of</strong> older p<strong>at</strong>ients <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH. The<br />

project involved 18 interactive music workshops and reached<br />

over 400 p<strong>at</strong>ients over <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 65. Each workshop lasted<br />

1.5 hours and involved group sessions and one-to-one<br />

interaction.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> this project, Rosie led fur<strong>the</strong>r music<br />

workshops (10 in total) on Pultney and Midford wards, which<br />

also care for p<strong>at</strong>ients over <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 65.<br />

We would also like to thank <strong>the</strong> Qu<strong>art</strong>et Community<br />

Found<strong>at</strong>ion for supporting our programme April-June 20<strong>11</strong>.<br />

‘It cheers you up, if I felt like it I would dance and sing as<br />

well.’<br />

P<strong>at</strong>ient<br />

‘For a long term p<strong>at</strong>ient it is really beneficial to have<br />

something in <strong>the</strong> hospital from <strong>the</strong> outside world. Music is<br />

a very uplifting thing and would make a huge difference to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir well-being.’<br />

P<strong>at</strong>ient<br />

‘Music involves listening and appreci<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> wonderful<br />

musical ability which takes <strong>the</strong> mind on a journey allowing<br />

you, for a few minutes, to forget <strong>the</strong> reason for being here.’<br />

P<strong>at</strong>ient<br />

‘A good way <strong>of</strong> diverting people’s thoughts from difficult<br />

situ<strong>at</strong>ions. Very helpful when you have to wait a long time<br />

for a p<strong>at</strong>ient to have <strong>the</strong>ir tre<strong>at</strong>ment. An enjoyable way to<br />

lighten <strong>the</strong> mood. Really good to hear a talented <strong>art</strong>ist in<br />

person.’<br />

Visitor<br />

‘Live music on an acute geri<strong>at</strong>ric ward has been a<br />

revel<strong>at</strong>ion. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>ients have dementia and <strong>the</strong><br />

positive effect <strong>of</strong> music is clearly observable. Not only does<br />

it alter <strong>the</strong> ambience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ward but also can trigger long<br />

lost memories for p<strong>at</strong>ients. W<strong>at</strong>ching <strong>the</strong> smiles appear<br />

on p<strong>at</strong>ients, staff and rel<strong>at</strong>ives faces is wonderful to see.<br />

Wednesdays are now looked forward to by everyone on <strong>the</strong><br />

ward.’<br />

CAPITAL PROJECTS The Dyson Centre for Neo N<strong>at</strong>al Care (NICU)<br />

Capital Projects and Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> work toge<strong>the</strong>r to<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>e <strong>art</strong> and design into <strong>the</strong> fabric <strong>of</strong> new buildings<br />

and refurbishments. We use a combin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> charitable<br />

funds and <strong>the</strong> % for Art policy to realise <strong>the</strong>se projects.<br />

As Arts Programme Manager, Hetty Dupays worked with <strong>the</strong><br />

Capital Projects Team, architects Fielden Clegg Bradley (FCB)<br />

and <strong>the</strong> RUH Forever Friends Appeal (FFA) on several aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> this environmentally sustainable, st<strong>at</strong>e-<strong>of</strong>-<strong>the</strong>-<strong>art</strong> unit for<br />

prem<strong>at</strong>ure babies.<br />

Hetty carried out consult<strong>at</strong>ion with parents and NICU staff to<br />

develop many aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unit, including<br />

signage and furnishings. Colour schemes were developed<br />

with FCB’s colour consultant, Libby Lloyd, who has produced<br />

a sequence <strong>of</strong> beautiful colours around <strong>the</strong> unit th<strong>at</strong> give <strong>the</strong><br />

unit a unique ambience and also help with way finding.<br />

Boex Cre<strong>at</strong>ive Solutions, based in Cornwall, were<br />

commissioned to design a sibling play room with a layout<br />

th<strong>at</strong> would make <strong>the</strong> playroom practical, welcoming and fun<br />

to be in.<br />

Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> is also working with <strong>art</strong>ist Christopher<br />

Tipping to design an etched panel for <strong>the</strong> window between<br />

<strong>the</strong> garden and main Princess Anne Corridor - this will<br />

be installed once <strong>the</strong> final stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building has been<br />

completed in December 20<strong>11</strong>.<br />

A large triptych painting by Deidre Dyson has been don<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> <strong>art</strong>ist for <strong>the</strong> main reception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unit.<br />

Linac Bunker: Radio<strong>the</strong>rapy<br />

Radio<strong>the</strong>rapy currently has two Linac Bunkers to tre<strong>at</strong><br />

p<strong>at</strong>ients. This is a stressful tre<strong>at</strong>ment for p<strong>at</strong>ients and we<br />

were asked to source <strong>art</strong>works during <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

a third bunker th<strong>at</strong> would help p<strong>at</strong>ients to feel calm. We<br />

commissioned Sky Inside to produce a six panelled ceiling<br />

piece depicting a high resolution image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sky with<br />

cherry tree blossom framing <strong>the</strong> scene.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> long corridor approaching <strong>the</strong> bunker a virtual<br />

window was cre<strong>at</strong>ed helping to bring a sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outside<br />

world into <strong>the</strong> corridor. Both pieces give altern<strong>at</strong>ive and<br />

convincing vistas <strong>of</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ure, which has been proven to<br />

help p<strong>at</strong>ients to take <strong>the</strong>ir minds <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>ir tre<strong>at</strong>ment and<br />

overcome anxiety.<br />

‘We would like to thank you for <strong>the</strong> transform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> our ward environment, due to our<br />

wonderful <strong>art</strong>ists and your hard work which enabled us to achieve this. We have so much<br />

positive feedback; long-term p<strong>at</strong>ients are amazed <strong>at</strong> how much <strong>the</strong> ward has changed and<br />

improved.’<br />

Lyn Gardiner, Play Specialist on <strong>the</strong> Children’s Ward<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> past few years Art <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> He<strong>art</strong> has successfully<br />

introduced a wide programme <strong>of</strong> <strong>art</strong>s throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

hospital. This extensive and diverse programme does<br />

provide so many ways in which we can help communic<strong>at</strong>e<br />

with each o<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> same time gain inspir<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

enjoyment. I believe th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>art</strong>s programme is vital to<br />

<strong>the</strong> wellbeing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUH, fur<strong>the</strong>r enhancing our sense <strong>of</strong><br />

community and <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world around us.’<br />
