I toured and recorded with Sarah Vaughan in 1973
when I was 22 years
old. The trio behind Sarah Vaughan was comprised
of Jimmy Cobb on
drums, Carl Schroeder on piano and myself. We
recorded an album called “Sarah Vaughan Live
in Japan” and “More of Sarah Vaughan Live
in Japan”. In 1975 I recorded and toured with
Carmen McRae. The trio was Marshall Otwell
on piano, Joey Baron on drums and myself. The
record we made
was called “Carmen
McRae Live at
Ronnie Scott’s”.
I also worked with
Peggy Lee, Morgana
King, Chet Baker,
Buddy Collette, Bob
Brookmeyer and
Mundell Lowe to
name a few.
In 1983 I recorded
in Torino with Thad
Jones and a group of
musicians from around the world.
In 1979 I became a cabinet maker and eventually
did that full time and only played the gigs that
were creative.
In 2006 I built a performance space in Northridge
California next to my cabinet shop where my wife
Rhonda and I have been holding Jazz Concerts. It
is called “GIANNELLI SQUARE”.
This project started with a rehearsal in Giannelli Square, a little Theatre that John Giannelli, the bassist
built in Northrige California. After several concerts we decided to record a few things. Jon Winnery, the
alto Sax player and I decided on the music that we would record. Jon chose some Lee Konitz and Warren
Marsh tunes, I chose the Bill Evans tunes as well as an ubscure Duke Ellington piece “Race” and two of
my originals. Our drummer Kendall Kay is a busy Los Angeles Jazz musician - originally from South Africa.
