Odesa
Odesa is simply enchanting with its marvelous architecture. Odesa’s history as a thriving
enterprise has left the city with some splendid architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries
and a multifaceted, irrepressible spirit. Some buildings display a carious mixture
of different styles, such as distinct French architecture with a distinct Russian flavor, and
some are built in the Art Nouveau Style which was in vogue at the turn of the century. Its
stately 19th century classical architecture is set on orderly planned streets that are surrounded
with green space, giving the city an air of elegance.
Strikingly ornate buildings of the late 19th and early 20th century are reminiscent of
Right Bank Paris. Most buildings in Odesa were built with white stone consisting of calcareous
materials imbedded with seashells, which appears to be saturated with hot sunshine.
This gives many of the city’s buildings a whitewashed appearance. The extracted
limestone resulted in the formation of an entire labyrinth of underground galleries.
One of the few planned cities in Ukraine, Odesa’s central core is laid out in a grid. The first
city plan designed by the engineer F. Devollan in the late 18th century was executed by
the generations of Odesa architects that followed. As early as the first half of the 19th
century, the numerous landowners who had moved to Odesa attracted by the profitable
grain trade, started constructing their private residences. As a rule, they would build
palace compounds: two-storied mansions with forecourts, wrought iron grilles and porticos
indicating the entrance. Even today, the formal halls of these palaces are strikingly
opulent. The mansions of wealthy merchants and factory-owners built to the designs of
the best Odesa architects were concealed in the verdure of Frantsuzky Boulevard.

Bukovel Ski Resort
Bukovel ski resort is a new large ski resort in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast 30 km to the west of
Yaremcha. It is Ukraine’s first European-class resort, with a couple high-speed chair lifts,
meticulously groomed slopes and snow-making machines, turnstyles for letting skiers
through lines, and ubiquitous security personnel. It’s unusual to see this degree of organization
in Ukraine. Bukovel resort has been carefully planned to make skiing enjoyable
and convenient and to avoid lift lines and congestion. Lift lines longer than five minutes
are rare.
Carpathian Mountains
Carpathian Mountains are considered to be the Green Pearl of Ukraine. It is one of the
most popular resorts and tourist centers of the country. A beautiful mix of natural areas,
forests, meadows, shepherds and humans living in harmony with nature is what makes
the mountains so sttractive to tourists!
Art and Culture
Ukrainians are very hospitable. As their guest,
you will receive red-carpet treatment. This
includes heavily-laden tables, gifts, and many
toasts. While it is sometimes uncomfortable for
Americans, who have so much, to accept gifts
from those who have so little, they will be very
insulted if you turn them down.
- If invited into a family home, it is traditional to
bring a gift. A bottle of wine, a cake, or a bouquet
of flowers are customary.
- If you bring flowers, make sure the number of
flowers is uneven (3,5, etc.).
- Be ready to give toasts at dinner, for guests are
often asked to do so.

Must see places
Ukraine occupies an area of 603,700
square kilometers, and is among the
largest European countries. Territorially
it is larger than France (544,000 sq.
km.), Spain (505,000 sq. km.), Sweden
(450,000 sq. km.), and Poland (312,7000
sq. km.).
In terms of population (47 million as
of January 1, 2008), Ukraine ranks fifth
in Europe after Germany, France, the
United Kingdom, and Italy. The population
density per one square kilometer
amounts to an average of 85.6 people,
the European average being 67.
In its ethnic composition, Ukraine is
a multi-ethnic Republic, inhabited
by more than 110 ethnic groups, of
which Ukrainian (72.7%) are the largest,
followed by Russians, Jews, Belarussians,
Moldovans, Bulgarians, Poles and
Hungarians.

CRIMEAN RESORTS
Crimea is a fascinating region to explore, as well as a great place to spend a
vacation. Across the centuries it has attracted settlers such as the Greeks, the
Venetians and the Genoese - all of whom founded cities along the coast and
inter-married with the local people.
KYIV
Kyiv, a scenic city of close to 3 million people situated on the Dnieper River, is
the bustling capital of Ukraine. Ancient Kievan Rus, which reached its greatest
period of ascendancy during the 11th and 12th centuries, was a center of
trade routes between the Baltic and the Mediterranean. The art and architecture
of Kyiv are world treasures.
CITY OF LVIV
Lviv is a very poetic city steeped in legends both ancient and relatively new.
Narrow medieval streets paved with stones, architectural decoration done in
different styles – all preserved in its original form. In ancient times Lviv was
the capital of a mighty Slavic state called the Galicia-Volyn principality. Being
a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then Poland contributed to the
formation of the city’s unique image.
CITY OF YALTA
Steep mountain peaks serve as a lovely backdrop for Yalta the jewel of the
Crimean peninsula. There is no surprise that the writer Anton Chekhov would
choose to live in this seaside resort—it seems to be a combination of Carmel
California the French Riviera and Greece. Yalta (pop. 80 000) has exemplary
resorts, museums, and beaches.
CITY OF KAMYANETS-PODILSKY
Kamyanets-Podilsky, one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, is considered a phenomenon
of great cultural importance. A rocky island skirted by the tight loop
of the Smotrich River flowing in a picturesque canyon, served as a unique
pedestal on which over more than a thousand years both well-known and
anonymous masters created a miracle in stone.
SOPHIEVKA PARK, UMAN
Uman dendro park Sophievka is the real world landscape architecture masterpiece
of the end of the XVIII-th century and the beginning of the XIX-th. The
park is spread over the territory of 154,7 hectares and is situated at the outskirts
of the ancient town Cherkassy, Uman region. It is considered to be the
standard of the landscape composition of water, land, architectural works and
sculptures.

Extreme Tourism
www.uz.gov.ua - the official website of the
Ukrainian Railroad (in Ukrainian only).
Train is a very reliable way to travel within
Ukraine, especially in the winter time when
many domestic flights are cancelled or
delayed due to poor weather conditions,
while car travel is not good either and bus
travel, being quite uncomfortable, will take
ages. On top of that many cities just cannot
be reached via air. A train will definitely be
en-rout and will reach a destination point
on time or with minimum delay, no matter
what is the weather and time of the year.
Therefore, train travel in Ukraine is so popular
among travelers. Not to mention it is very
inexpensive.
UKRAINIAN CUISINE IN NEW YORK, NY
Veselka is the quintessential Ukrainian ‘soul food’ restaurant located in the
heart of the East Village. It was founded in 1954 by Wolodymyr Darmochwal,
who emigrated from Ukraine to flee the war in 1944. Over the years, Veselka
has proven itself a well-loved neighborhood fixture, and today it continues to
be a family-run business under the leadership of the founders’ former sonin-law,
Tom Birchard. Tom’s eldest son, Jason, is the general manager, and his
youngest son, Todd, works in the restaurant as well. Tom’s wife, Sally, a practicing
veterinarian, lends herself to the menu design and interior decorating.
Even Mykola, the founders’ son, continues to contribute, having computerized
the accounting and cost control systems. Just like its neighborhood, Veselka
is bustling twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Its menu continues to
expand, with an extensive selection that features traditional homemade Ukrainian
foods, American Diner fare, an eclectic mix of daily specials, as well as beer
and wine. Veselka’s fame has spread beyond the borders of New York City, being
known in Ukraine and other parts of the world as a place that serves great
food in a lively but unhurried atmosphere.
