For 142 years, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines has been
instrumental in addressing community needs. The YMCA is the
Dear Friends of the YMCA
We are excited to share with you our latest Annual Report covering the 2009-2010 program
year. If there is one word that described the past year it would be “growth,” because we have
experienced a 40 percent increase over the last twelve months. The Greater Des Moines
community continues to support and embrace our mission as we further our work building
character and assets in kids, promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening families.
This is the final year of our current strategic plan appropriately themed “Preparing for
future generations.” We are extremely proud of our accomplishments over the last five
years and look forward to sharing our new plan with you once it is complete. The highlights of
this final year include opening the new Waukee branch, continuing the growth and program
development at the YMCA Healthy Living Center and beginning construction on our new
supportive housing facility. However, these are just a few of the many accomplishments you’ll
find throughout this report.
John Mathew with his friends at Y Camp.
Service to Youth Award
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines proudly presents the 2010 Service to Youth Award
to John Mathew, whose longtime dedication and immeasurable efforts have
contributed greatly to the Y Camp that so many kids and families enjoy today.
John credits his mother for the priceless experience Y Camp provided in his life. “As
an 11-year-old, I was enthusiastic about attending Y Camp for the first time, until my
mother turned on to the gravel road toward camp,” he recalls.
Despite his begging, pleading and crying for her to take him home, to rescue him
from 10 days with strangers, John’s mother required him to stay. “That week was the
beginning of a million-dollar experience that changed my life,” John says. “Y Camp
and its people have had a profound impact on me.”
After that memorable first time at Y Camp, John returned for the following four
summers. His passion for Y Camp moved him to become a camp leader during his high
school and college years. For two summers during college, John also served as Y Camp
business manager. Later, John joined the Y Camp Board and served in that capacity for
several years as well.
“When I worked at camp, Ray Pugh always reminded us that ‘camp was for the
campers’ and that the campers were to be our focus,” John recalls. “But I found that
camp was for the leaders, too, because incredible growth and development occur when
a group of people spend the summer together all focused on a central task.
“My time as a camper was rewarding and enjoyable, and my years as a Y Camp
leader helped me grow in confidence and experience,” John adds. “I learned about the
importance of responsibility at a young age and made lasting, life-long friendships that
continue to this day.”
John recently established the Strategic Improvement Fund, aimed to benefit
Y Camp now, as well as in the future. The reason he chose to support Y Camp with this
fund? John puts it simply: “It’s a small paycheck for a priceless experience.”
John is Chief Executive Officer of Wick Communications, a newspaper ownership and
management company based in Sierra Vista, Arizona, with 28 locations in 12 states.
Y Camp
Branch
Profile
Since 1919, Y Camp has been
changing lives. Y Camp is a 300-acre
retreat in Boone, Iowa, where children,
teens and families are free to grow, learn
and laugh, while building relationships
with each other and nature. In doing so,
they learn and grow genuinely in spirit,
mind and body.
We are known for our focus on “the kids,
the kids, the kids” and are proud of our
character value guarantee: If your camper
does not have a better understanding of
the character values of caring, honesty,
respect and responsibility from their camp
experience, we will refund the camp fee.
In addition to building character in
children and teens, we also work to
preserve the natural world and Midwest
values. We have a host of warm, friendly,
and committed staff members and
volunteers, who display boundless
optimism and can-do attitudes.
Center
Children who visit the
YMCA Healthy Living
Center’s ChildWatch know and love
12-year-old Patricia Northcutt. She regularly
volunteers her time in ChildWatch, helping to
engage and entertain the children while their
parents exercise. Whatever the project – from
crafts to cooking – Patricia is ready to lend a
hand. When a child is reluctant to participate,
she’s the first one to offer encouragement.
She always jumps in to assist where needed
without being asked. Patricia’s gifts working
with children benefit our YMCA members
and contribute to ChildWatch being fun and
safe for children. She is the daughter of Lynn
Northcutt and is a home school student.

necessary to get the weight room back in
service for our members. In addition, Weldon
YMCA core values has resulted in strong
parent involvement and efficient swim meet
operations. He has been a mentor to new
swimmers and parents, teaching them to
develop their competitive spirit while
exhibiting outstanding sportsmanship. In
The Ankeny Family YMCA is deeply
connected throughout the Ankeny community,
because of a shared commitment to
strengthen the community and impact families
values-oriented child care and far-reaching
financial assistance, to supporting healthy
lifestyles for individuals and families, we aim
to identify and serve the unique needs and
interests of our community.
You’ll always feel welcome at the Ankeny
a friendly atmosphere and a staff ready to
in every child, adult and family.
“Exercise and the YMCA have
turned my life around.”
- Jack Biggs, Sr.
“Exercise and the YMCA have turned my life around,” says Jack Biggs, Sr.,
an active member of the Ankeny Family YMCA. “People too often want the magic
pill to feel better,” he continues. “The YMCA provides the means for this. You feel
better when you leave, like a good day’s work.”Jack’s involvement extends beyond
exercise to include helping at events and contributing to fund raising efforts. He
even portrays Santa Claus for the branch’s annual Christmas Family Night!
The YMCA’s commitment to serving everyone is also very important to Jack.
“I value the idea that anyone can have a membership, even if they are unable to
pay.” Jack says he senses a “family feeling” at the Ankeny YMCA. “The people and
staff are all very kind,” he describes. “To me, it’s more than exercise, it’s a part of
my social life.”
A small, hometown atmosphere is what
you’ll experience at the Boone County
Family YMCA. We are the hub of the
community, where children, adults and
families develop the skills and
relationships they need to be healthy,
confident and connected to others.
Everyone is welcome, regardless of age,
income or background. We are deeply
rooted in the Boone community, as we
work with local leaders and organizations
to encourage people and families, build
up the community and promote positive
change overall. Although small in number,
our staff overflows with passion for those
we serve, encouraging good health and
fostering connections with friends,
old and new.
“The wonderful Mommy and Me outings
are one of my favorite activities
at the YMCA.”
- Maggie Schlerman
The Boone County YMCA has a family atmosphere that Maggie Schlerman values
greatly. It’s a place where her family can spend time together, with the assurance that
the programs are based on developing positive values and strong character.
Maggie is at the Boone County YMCA every day to work out and socialize with new
friends she’s made since becoming a member. “The wonderful Mommy and Me
outings are one of my favorite activities at the YMCA,” she shares. “I’m also
thankful for the ChildWatch services so I can attend exercise classes knowing my
child is in good hands. But it’s the staff that makes the Boone County YMCA what it
is,” Maggie adds. “They are always friendly and caring and make it an enjoyable place
to be.” Maggie’s participation at the Boone County YMCA has helped her make better
choices relative to her health and she says she enjoys her improved lifestyle.
In addition, Maggie likes the community-oriented nature of the YMCA. “The Partner
With Youth funds are so important and it’s great to know that no one is turned away
from membership or programming simply because they cannot pay.”

“It really makes a difference to a lot of
people and kids that the YMCA is here.”
- Edwyn Daye
When Edwyn Daye was in the process of gaining full custody of his son, a Polk
County judge suggested he get involved with the Fatherhood Initiative at the John R.
Grubb YMCA. “I had been a father for 20 years, so at first, I didn’t think there was
anything the class could teach me,” Edwyn remembers. “But after listening to the
struggles of the other fathers in the group, I realized that by coming together, we
could help each other.”
That was two years ago. Edwyn completed the 12-week parenting curriculum and
then, with a desire to remain involved, began speaking at various YMCA events in the
Des Moines metro area to share his experiences as a father and with the Fatherhood
Initiative. “I encourage fathers and let them know how important it is for them to
take an active role in their children’s lives,” he says.
Today, Edwyn facilitates a weekly Fatherhood Initiative group at the Grubb YMCA,
helping men who are in similar situations as he once was.
As for the Grubb YMCA, Edwin can’t say enough about the benefits it brings to the
community and the neighborhood. “I grew up in this neighborhood and we didn’t
have a YMCA at that time,” he says. “It really makes a difference to a lot of people
and kids that the YMCA is here. It’s a friendly and comfortable atmosphere,” he adds.
“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to be here and help others.”
Since 1994, the John R. Grubb YMCA
Through partnerships with individuals
we work to affect lasting change among
those we serve – from fostering
“The Riverfront YMCA is always ready
to help those in need.”
- Tootsie Powell
It’s been more than 30 years since Tootsie Powell began coming to the Riverfront
YMCA – and she has a t-shirt to show her pride in that milestone. “I loved the idea
of earning a t-shirt for the years I’ve belonged at the YMCA,” she says. “I like
wearing my 30-year t-shirt!”
Tootsie is a member of the Upper Class, a group that takes water exercise classes
three times per week at the Riverfront branch. But that wasn’t keeping her busy
enough.
“I’m a people person and do not like to sit around,” Tootsie admits. She and three
friends – Dorothy Smith, Barb Fath and Nat Murphy – decided to organize birthday
and holiday parties for the Upper Class. “We decorate the tables and walls on our
own,” Tootsie says. “I travel a lot and bring back coffee cups and other trinkets for
those who are celebrating birthdays that month.”“I also started a monthly bulletin
with upcoming events and updates on members of the group,” she adds.
In addition to her friends in the Upper Class group, Tootsie points to the branch’s
staff as a favorite part of her YMCA experience. “They are always willing to help us
out,” she says. Tootsie also values the Riverfront YMCA’s commitment to the
community and believes there is a good understanding of community needs. “The
Riverfront YMCA is always ready to help those in need.”
Profile
Situated in the heart of downtown
Des Moines, the Riverfront YMCA serves a
unique mix of populations, with a variety of
ages, races and ethnicities at the facility each
day. During the early morning, noontime, and
late afternoon hours, Riverfront is abuzz with the
downtown business crowd. Kids and families fill
the facility during evenings and weekends, many
speaking languages from different parts of the
world. The Riverfront YMCA, is a place where
traditions are steadfast and devotion runs deep.
Handball clubs, swimming excellence, volunteer
leadership and fund development are just a few
examples of the time-honored endeavors by
members, staff and volunteers.
People come to us because they know we’ll
be here, as we have been for the past 54 years.
We nurture life lessons in kids, foster health
and wellbeing among people of any age, bring
people together and provide mutual support for
everyone in our neighborhoods.
“Since joining the YMCA, I have built
relationships with the staff and members.”
- John Neer
Life has changed in the past six years for John Neer. It was then that he took a
new job in construction and began dropping weight due to the physical nature of
his work. As his weight continued to decrease, John decided to begin working out
and changed his eating habits. When John signed up to run the Race for the Cure
with his wife, he had no idea how much he would come to love racing. His
enjoyment of 5k races sparked a desire to try a triathlon and, in 2008, John joined
the South Suburban YMCA to train.
“Through the YMCA, I met several other members who run and do triathlons,”
John conveys. “I started training with them, asking for advice on how to train and
what to expect.”John has since completed numerous triathlons and, in October,
completed his first marathon. He also teaches spinning classes at the South
Suburban branch—and has maintained his almost-100-pound weight loss for six
years. John says he loves the family environment at the South Suburban YMCA,
where people get to know each other and their families. He describes it as
a place anyone can feel at home.
“Since joining the YMCA, I have built relationships with the staff and members,”
John says. “The more you are there, the more people get to know you and know
what you do. Usually people know me because they know my wife. This is the first
time people know me because of me!”
“I view the Walnut Creek YMCA as an
organization that reaches far beyond the
walls of its building to make a positive
impact in our community.”
- Shahna Janssen
Shahna Janssen has experienced the Walnut Creek YMCA as a mom,
Board member and community partner. “I value the YMCA because it’s a
mission-driven organization that seeks to make connections and enhance
community life,” she says. “We all benefit from that.”
As Director of Community Education for the West Des Moines (WDM)
Community School District, Shahna has worked in partnership with the
Walnut Creek YMCA and the WDM Parks and Recreation Department. “For
many years, we have had cross-representation on our boards and committees,
allowing us to exchange many ideas and work smarter together to serve the
needs of our community,” she says. “I view the Walnut Creek YMCA as an
organization that reaches far beyond the walls of its building to make a
positive impact in our community.”
To demonstrate her point, Shahna points to several contributions the
Walnut Creek YMCA has made through its partnership with the school district
and the city: The WDM Teen Center, intramural programs, teen service clubs,
home-school physical education and program scholarships.
Shahna’s husband and children are also involved at the Walnut Creek
YMCA. “I appreciate knowing that the YMCA is a family-friendly,
community-oriented organization that promotes healthy choices and good
character,” she comments. “Those things really matter to me as a mom.”
At the Walnut Creek Family YMCA, we are all about
bringing people together and helping them build connections
with each other and the community. For 30 years, we’ve been
a mainstay in West Des Moines and the surrounding area. As
the population has grown and evolved, we have remained
dedicated to nurturing the potential in every individual –
whether young, old or in-between – and encouraging the
pursuit of passions old and new.
Our community partnerships are a great source of pride and
impact, particularly those that focus on the children and teens
in our neighborhoods and schools. Through these efforts, we
are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to
positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement
in our youth.
“While the YMCA was a lifesaver for me at the
time, over the years it has become so much more.”
- Becky Waugaman
Since 2002, the Waukee Family YMCA has been a place of support, healing and
growth for Becky Waugaman and her daughter, Natalie. When she joined the YMCA,
Becky was on a journey she’d never anticipated. Widowed while pregnant with
Natalie, Becky was now a single mom of a one-year-old. She was also working and
attending classes to finish her college degree–and was new to the community.
“At that time, my motivation in joining the YMCA was for my own physical and
mental wellbeing,” Becky recalls. “I could drop Natalie off in the safe and loving
environment of ChildWatch and spend one hour working out, which became an
oasis for me.”
Becky says that almost immediately the YMCA became a community family for her
and Natalie. “We quickly met new friends, some of whom, more than eight years
later, still work there,” she says. “While the YMCA was a lifesaver for me at that
time, over the years it has become so much more.”
Appreciating the emphasis placed on character development and desiring
that foundation for Natalie, Becky has continued to enroll Natalie in YMCA
programs. Now 9 ½ years old, Natalie has benefited from participation in early
childhood classes, preschool, summer day camps and youth sports.
“I have a lot of camp memories, starting from kindergarten,” Natalie says with
excitement. “I love the YMCA staff and have built great relationships with them.
Now that I’m in 4th grade, I come to the YMCA to hang out with
friends and take classes.”
Becky recalls one staff member in particular who
made an impact on Natalie. “Patrick, the swim
camp supervisor, became a positive adult
male figure in her life,” Becky explains.
“I’m sure he has no idea what his simple
interactions meant to Natalie, but I
know he was significant in filling her
need for positive male affirmation in
her development and self-esteem as
a young girl.” Natalie sums it up:
“I hope you love the YMCA,
too, because it is a fab place
to be and a wonderful place
to see friends!”
Waukee
Family YMCA
Branch
Profile
In one of the fastest growing suburban
areas in Iowa, the Waukee Family YMCA
is a positive and friendly gathering place
that helps individuals, families and the
community grow closer together, develop
healthy lifestyles and connect with others
through fitness, sports, fun and shared
interests.
Our network within the Waukee
community is far-reaching. From the high
school’s use of our new natatorium for
its inaugural swim team to a local church
hosting our preschool program to
thousands of kids participating in our
youth programming at facilities
throughout Waukee – we are
committed to providing opportunities
that build community ties and allow kids,
adults and families to grow and thrive.
The efforts of our volunteer and staff
leadership have been nothing short of
inspirational, as they interact and lead in
a positive manner, sparking real
transformation within the community
and its members.
“What more can I say than thank God for
giving us the YMCA Healthy Living Center!”
- Lisle Shires
After suffering a stroke and experiencing right-side paralysis as a result, Lisle Shires
found that his health insurance did not cover the therapy he needed to regain his
former physical abilities. “This is why I can’t say enough about the YMCA Healthy
Living Center,” Lisle declares. “The staff is well-trained and caring, and the facilities are
excellent. I benefit from the medical water program held in one of the three pools.
I also benefit from the well-equipped exercise area staffed with therapists that set up
a program to fit your needs and offer help when needed.”
Enthused about all the YMCA Healthy Living Center has to offer, Lisle and his wife,
Julia, invited Trina Radske Suchan, YMCA Healthy Living Center Medical Director, to speak
with their Sunday School class about the many benefits to be gained through the Healthy
Living Center’s programs and facilities. “Many of our friends in the class were interested
in improving their lives through better health, and have since joined us at the YMCA
Healthy Living Center,” Lisle describes.
After they exercise, Lisle says he and Julia enjoy time with friends in the coffee shop.
“We find the conversation and camaraderie to be nearly as important as the exercise,”
he says. “We also appreciate one of the chaplains who often stops by to offer spiritual
support.”
Lisle describes the YMCA Healthy Living Center as having something for everyone. “The
Healthy Living Center serves the child enjoying supervised time while a parent exercises; a
student recovering from a sports injury or improving at a sport; a post-surgical individual
wanting help with recovery; and someone learning to live with a cardiac disorder,” he says.
