Arron Wood, Managing Director, Kids Teaching Kids
8:45 OPENING KEYNOTE
Drive: What the science of motivation can teach us
about high performance
Daniel Pink, best-selling author of ‘A Whole New Mind’,
uses four decades of behavioural research to reveal why the
traditional approach to high performance backfires in the
classroom, on campus, and in the workplace. With cutting-edge examples
from both education and business, you will learn the three key ingredients
of intrinsically-motivated high performers. And you’ll discover how to create
contexts that tap the deepest motivations of your students and staff to produce
the highest results.
In this engaging presentation, Pink:
• Explains the dangerous mismatch between what science
knows and what education and business do
• Shows, with real-life examples, why Motivation 3.0 – built on
autonomy, mastery, and purpose – is much more effective
than the 20th century approach to motivation
• Demonstrates and explains techniques that can help put
these ideas into action
OPTION
ONE
Concurrent Stream
2:15 The creative technology revolution you can’t ignore
Learning outside of school is being transformed by the trends of tinkering, maker
culture and personal fabrication. School leaders need to be mindful to embrace
the major shift in digital learning, married to traditional crafting practices.
The Maker ethos of constructionism, or learning-by-making through first-hand
experience will be explored in the context of projects using a range of analog
and digital “construction” materials. Children can now use technology to create
and solve their own problems. Affordable tools and materials allow students
to go farther than was imagined just a few years ago. Junk, high-tech gear, art
supplies and engineering principles collide to expand human potential.
Art and science converge and are amplified by computing. When the artificial
boundaries between subject areas are blurred and every student requires the
same process skills and tools, the distinction between vocational and academic
education is obliterated.
In order for schools to seize the opportunities afforded by this “Maker” spirit,
educators need more than awareness that the world is changing. They need to
develop new skills and redesign classroom environments to support learnercentered
practices.
Dr Gary Stager, Executive Director, The Constructivist Consortium
3:00 Shaping and implementing the Australian Curriculum
• Designing a curriculum that supports 21st century learning
• Anticipating the requirements of future school leavers
• Catering to changing ways in which young people will learn
• Gaining insights on school performance through appropriate
data collection and analysis
Prof. Barry McGaw AO, PhD, Chair, Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA)
3:25 EduTECH presents… the school play
Join a group representing players in the school community for a fun hypothetical
scenario involving BYOD, social media and home-school relations.
Out Of Our Minds: learning to be creative
National education systems worldwide are being reformed to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. As a respected adviser to governments in
Europe, Asia and the US, Sir Ken urges schools and colleges everywhere to rethink their basic assumptions about intelligence and achievement.
He argues for radical changes in how we educate all students to meet the extraordinary challenges of living and working in the 21st century.
Takeaways include:
• How education wastes more talent than it saves
• The three core objectives of 21st Century education
• Why we’re all smarter than we think
• What schools and colleges should do, and how governments should help
Creating space for innovation: reconciling the
excitement of technology innovation with the
constraints of curriculum
In the world of education, technology projects are all too often
overhyped and under deliver. The challenge is finding the right
technological innovation to undertake in the first place. Working with school
leaders around the world, Ewan McIntosh and his team have taken approaches
from the creative industries, the world of tech start-ups and innovation
businesses to school technology leadership. The result has been a series of
compelling projects and long-term innovation that is sustainable both financially
and in terms of innovation for the school.
Out Of Our Minds: learning to be creative
National education systems worldwide are being reformed
to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. As a respected
adviser to governments in Europe, Asia and the US, Sir Ken
urges schools and colleges everywhere to rethink their basic
assumptions about intelligence and achievement. He argues for radical changes
in how we educate all students to meet the extraordinary challenges of living
and working in the 21st century.
Takeaways include:
• How education wastes more talent than it saves
• The three core objectives of 21st Century education
• Why we’re all smarter than we think
• What schools and colleges should do, and how governments
Improving School Administration with Web 2.0 Tools
Scott will focus on two critical ways schools can use technology to improve
the back office systems and processes for managing the business side of
their organisations.
There are two powerful uses of technology that can really be game changing
if applied well:
• The first is using ad hoc work flow systems to redesign
paper and labour intensive processes so they flow faster and
with less human involvement
• The second is the improved use of data in the management
of students and the learning process
• By applying the concepts of Business Intelligence and Big
Data, schools have a wonderful opportunity to dramatically
improve the ability deliver more customised learning, and to
have a much better understanding of the general
performance of the education system. Discover the
concepts behind these ideas, and the first few steps
administrators can take to get them in place
The new economy of learning: what happens next in
our school?
Technology has transformed many sectors from cinema to
publishing, from manufacture to politics, but in comparison to
some of these sectors education has been relatively
unflustered, beyond some productivity and engagement
gains. However, learning is just beginning to experience some
fundamental changes that will necessarily impact on the way we manage,
design, finance, organise, teach in, and fill our schools. This session illustrates
some unmissable certainties about tomorrow’s education.
Creating Space for Innovation
Technology can help make schools more efficient and, for
independent schools, it makes the difference between a
flourishing learning environment that grows, versus a stagnant
business where creativity and learning are unnecessarily stifled
• How does a school leader make the right choices,
at the right time?
• What new technologies will be around in five, ten or fifteen
years’ time to make our lives easier and learning
more engaging?
• We are spoilt for choice when it comes to technologies that
help our schools run more efficiently and our classrooms buzz
with excitement, so in which basket should business
managers place their eggs?
Ewan McIntosh advises independent and state schools large and small, as
well as Governments with multi-million investments in education to make, and
draws on these stories and experiences to help form some principles that will
help business managers and administrators make better calls when it comes to
running efficient - and exciting - learning spaces.
